Early Chicago from their formation in the late 60's until the accidental death of founding guitarist Terry Kath in January 1978 was a kicking rock band with horns, managed by James William Guercio (albums Chicago Transit Authority - Chicago XI). After that they had tinges of disco and became a sappy ballad band under guidance of new producer David Foster and founding bass player Peter Cetera. Check out the appropriately titled track "Introduction" written by and lead vocals by Terry Kath on this same album as he "introduced" the sound of this band to record listeners in April 1969. That laid the foundation for their sound for the next decade.
On their second album, simply titled Chicago, but informally called Chicago II despite not having the Roman numerals in it, their most famous track was 25 Or 6 To 4. Two other of their biggest hits from that album were Make Me Smile and Colour My World, both part of a seven-movement suite titled "Ballet for A Girl In Buchannon". THIS is the essence of Chicago.

Early Chicago is more or less the Chicago that no one knows about. It's like discovering a whole other continent with uncharted musical gems to explore. They've got a great balance of rock, jazz, and love ballads 👌

To answer your question as others have, Yes, the same band minus The Late Great Terry Kath!! Terry Kath shared vocals and was the lead guitarist of the band before his demise and in my opinion, Was the Heart and Soul of the Band!! Please check out their remake of the Spencer Davis Group's song called "I'm a Man", and "Beginnings " just to start!! Got a few more so stay tuned to my comments!! Thanks so much for reacting!!

I found your question at the beginning: "is this the same band?" really cool. On the early albums Chicago is - I say - a lot more experimental and I love that! It is worth listening to the whole album (maybe start with "Introduction"?). Except for "Free From Guitar", which is interesting but not really nice, every song is worth listening to.

Agree with your statement except for the "Free Form Guitar". I could imagine Hendrix making the comments about the greatness of Kath's guitar based on that production. Peace out.

@@williamstlouis3368 I'm in the minority here but it's not a conscious composition. According to the liner notes Kath was wanking around at a sound check looking for "sounds" and they rolled tape on it. Kind of like Guitar Center on any random Saturday morning. :D

Well well well....looks like one of my favorite reactors has discovered the unparalleled genius of early Chicago, my favorite band in the history of EVER!! 😁 I apologize in advance for how long this post will be, but I can't help my excitement when someone gets introduced to my guys. (I also apologize that much of what I say will probably be repeating what others have said.) There is no arguing the commercial success that Chicago had in the 80's, with their "light rock ballads" like "You're the Inspiration" and "Hard Habit to Break," but I think it's very safe to say that most long-term, die-hard fans of Chicago consider their first 10-11 albums (roughly their first decade) to be their gold era, when they were at their creative and musical best. Here's a primer of the original lineup:
Danny Seraphine, drums. (As a drummer who patterned everything I did when I started playing after him, I have to list him first.) Fantastic talent who had a real flair for fusing rock and jazz. In my opinion, one of the most underrated drummers of his time.
Terry Kath, guitar and lead vocals. Often referred to as one of the best guitar players of all time. When Chicago was opening for Jimi Hendrix in their early years, he reported said to one of the horn players: "Your guitar player is better than me." He also had a beautifully soulful, gritty singing voice. Sadly, he died in 1978, just over ten years after the band started.
Robert Lamm, keyboards and lead vocals. A wonderful keyboard player and songwriter, with silky smooth vocals. He's the one you hear singing lead on this song.
Peter Cetera, bass guitar and lead vocals. A gifted bass player with soaring tenor vocals. Anytime you hear someone singing in the rafters on an early Chicago song, it's him.
Jimmy Pankow, trombone. A talented trombone player who is constantly moving on stage, he also does the vast majority of the horn arrangements.
Walt Parazaider, saxophone and flute. A versatile woodwinds player who makes the flute sound cool.
Lee Loughnane, trumpet. A top-notch trumpet player who was a favorite of Doc Severinsen, the long-time Tonight Show band leader.
This horn section is, in my mind, the best you're ever going to hear; they are tight, dynamic, and stunning.
Everything Chicago did over that first decade is simply fantastic, and here are some of the best that I encourage you to check out:
"Ballet For a Girl in Buchannon" A brilliant, lengthy piece from Jimmy Pankow that includes two huge hits for the band, "Make Me Smile" (my favorite Chicago song) and "Colour My World." The entire piece is absolutely worth listening to, and it comes from Chicago II, which is my favorite album from any artist, ever.
    "Introduction"
    "Beginnings"
    "Questions 67 & 68"
    "Listen"
    "Fancy Colours"
    "Free"
    "Lowdown"
    "Saturday in the Park"
    "Dialogue, Parts I & II"
    "Just You and Me"
"Something In This City Changes People"
    "Feelin' Stronger Every Day"
    "(I've Been) Searchin' So Long"
    "Call On Me"
    "Wishing You Were Here"
    "Old Days"
And definitely their most iconic hit over all the years, "25 or 6 to 4"
Again, I truly apologize for making this post so very long, but no artist gets me more jazzed than early, classic Chicago!! Welcome aboard! 😁

Everything about this album is extraordinary! It's not anything like the Chicago that most people know today. It was an experimental, edgy, anti-establishment fusion of rock and jazz and NOTHING that came out after Terry Kath passed away was as good. They still made sellable MOR rock ballads, but this debut album would never be surpassed, in my opinion.
