A young Junior Durkin, (Jimmy Mason) the boy in this film was being groomed for bigger things in Hollywood by RKO Radio Pictures when his career was tragically cut short. Many said he was a natural on film and worked steadily through the early to mid 30s. He was sadly killed at the age of 19 in a horrific car accident in 1935, only 3 years after this film was made. Today unfortunately he's largely forgotten, but if he wasn't killed, he may of been a big star. A young Bette Davis was working for Universal at this point her her career and after this film was made her contract was not renewed. Universal basically discarded her. She was on her way back home to New York with her mother when George Arliss from Warner Bothers called her and told her he wanted her in a film the studio was producing, The Man Who Played God. She stayed, played in the movie and Warner's picked her up as a contract player. The rest is history. Bette always said how grateful she was to George Arliss and basically owed her career to him. Sometimes a simple twist of fate changes everything. A horrible car crash ended Junior Durkin's career, a single phone call started Bette's.

what a great lovely story... put me into so much tears again... that boy was so good to everyone and had been loyal to his bad boss and been a very good loving caring pal to Shorty... the institution back then was very cruel i suppose.. how hard to be an orphan or abandoned by parents and stay in that cruel place... i really cried so much especially when his pal Shorty died... how i hated that bad boss who had forsaken him but glad that his heart and conscience was awakened in the end with the help of Frank.. Thx to that kindhearted man... just wish that teens and men nowadays are like them... love this movie much.. it's worth watching... old movies are much more wonderful and sensible than the new ones and i love them much much more... Thx for making me cry again lol.. thx for sharing this lovely story!!! congrats to all the players, writer and director.. they all have been excellent!!!

Thank you so much for this upload. Great quality considering it is nearly 90 years since this film was made. Wish more of Trent Durkin's films would resurrect.
Sometimes life is so odd. Not sure why I watched this. I do like pre-code films and this is one Bette Davis film I had not seen and I thought I had seen them all.
However the big surprise was Trent (Junior) Durkin. From his first scene I was struck by something he radiated. He was for such a young man totally charismatic had that certain something. What they called during the silent films "IT". He had IT.
So I decided to research this young man whom I'd never heard of. The story is one of those tragedies of life. He was being groomed and expected to be a big star. But at age 19 he was killed in an auto accident. I could only think of James Dean. But in this case Trent was not driving nor being wreckless. There were 4 or 5 people in the auto and all were killed but one. Jackie Coogan. Jackie's father was driving the auto.
I always feel sad at the loss of someone young and full of promise. Also he was the first client of a young Agent Henry Wilson who became somewhat notorious. I knew him in passing during the 1960's with no idea of his history other than being Rock Hudson's agent.
Thus this film has an extra importance. Trent made about 10 films during 4 years but I don't know how many survived. He should not be forgotten. Also it reminds us of the brutality and exploitation that existed against orphans and juveniles. I wonder that the script did not deal with the mother being killed by a hit and run driver. In my lifetime this is illegal but there seemed to be no attention given to this in the film. I wonder if it was commonplace and acceptable or if they simply did not want to deal with this event in the script. If the lad had been more alert he'd have grabbed that man before he re-entered his auto and smashed his face in. The character of Jimmy however was very inspiring. He could have so easily become a bad apple but his honesty and sincerity were admirable and very brilliantly played by Trent.

I'm a huge Bette fan......but I have one trivial question. At what point, and why, did she start drawing her upper lip straight across instead of leaving her own pretty lip shape. In this movie her natural lip shape looks so nice. Sure would love to know the reasoning behind this later decision. 🙂Anyway....there's no one like her. Always fascinating. My personal favorite is "Now Voyager".

    • @agemoth

from what I've seen of hers so far, i absolutely loved 'Of Human Bondage' (her British accent there is hilarious - reminiscent Of Dick Van Dyke's in Mary Poppins!) , also just watched 'Dark Victory' which was so sad . Also loved' The old Maid' which was also really sad. I prefer sad or dark films to happy ones. Happy ones don't seem to have enough depth.
Ps - yes - I've been noticing how her top lip looked straight across and I thought it was odd too - maybe the two sides weren't symmetrical or something? no excuse really!

This movie made me so sad I cried. I do know that it was that bad back then for poor ppl. My grandpa told me stories,. And orphans were treated horribly. My heart goes out to them and all orphaned children. I can’t imagine not having my mommy and daddy to raise me. I would have turned out much worse, angry hateful and maybe even a woman who uses ppl or maybe ended up in prison. Who knows. But my parents raised me to know Jesus and with love. My dad passed away of brain tumor when I was 21, it left a big empty hole in my heart. I miss him very much. It’s because of my daddy praying for me all those years, that I turned back to God. I rebelled for a while, like most teens. But I soon found out life is not better away from home. Nobody will ever love u like your parents do . So imagine losing them at an early age, it truly must be just awful. So yes I cried at this movie. By the way I’ve never seen Bette Davis look so young. What an amazing actress. Thank u for the upload. You’re awesome. I fall asleep every nite watching one of your uploads. I appreciate it more than you know.

A shame that Trent Junior Durkin died at 19 when returning from a hunting trip in Mexico. Durkin with Jackie Coogan and others was a passenger in a car driven by Coogan's father. An oncoming car caused Coogan's father to swerve and the car tumbled over into a creek bed, killing everyone but Jackie Coogan.

Bette Davis shines here as angelic presence, IMO the script could be better. It starts slowly, the Hell House isn't as scary as it might have been, and the sympathetic character is a little weaselly. However it works, largely due to intelligent direction from an acknowledged master.

Fantastic movie - thank you! Where have all the guys like Jimmy gone? Reminds me of home. The old movies had such good plots and actors - I'm thrilled to have found another great one.

In McLaren Hall it was the same way ,many of us suffered so many corrections and bad food , bad treatment , abuse , we worked to have time for the radio ,for a few hours for one day. And there was extreme punishment , I saw so much abuse,, we were finally released to foster homes . That was horror at times

No one has mentioned Edward O'Brien. Pretty good actor too! I just watched a Bette Davis documentary. Interesting life of course.

Watching this in 2023 and I get to 3:39 and I’m like, “Did he just say…?????” Granted I’m old enough to have heard that particular version before, but not in a movie! YIKES!!! And while I do like old movies, that is also why I tend to cringe whenever I hear people talk about “the good old days”. Some things were better, but the bad stuff was REALLY really bad! Wow.

Catch a who?? Looks like my film noir just got a whole lot darker didn't it? Well he escaped just to let the world know about the cruelness of a reform school. Yet he'd deliberately catch someone by the toe to solve some no brainer of his. It's just a movie but it makes my skin hurt. I dont think I'm going to continue this movie. Maybe if the pizza would have made a disclaimer about the language I could have tolerated it.
