Finklestein Challenges the EXTREMIST Rhetoric (gets ignored immediately)

- as the Columbia student protests spark up a nationwide fervor across campuses, Finklestein gives a speech that actually goes against the grain and challenges the usefulness of the ever-increasing extremist rhetoric. Will the student movement hear and heed his warning? Or is Finklestein going to face a cancellation for this take?

Imagine being so extreme that you lose Finkelstein.
Many people who don't really know Finkelstein do not understand that he is not criticising the protesters for their extremism. He just thinks that their methods and rethoric are inefficient.
"Why would we want supporters of genocide to live?"
He/she/they says while casually suggesting genocide
"We're not extremists! We just want to help Palestinians!"
"Okay, stop using extremist rhetoric."
"LA LA LA LA LA LA LA LA WE ARE NOT LISTENING."
We could be effective but we rather be radical 😎

Finkelstein criticising others for extremist rhetoric and using shallow political slogans? Now I’ve seen everything
Hypocrisy aside it's just tragically funny how these people really do just want to support terrorists and kill Jews, and when one of their heroes tells them to knock it off they refuse to.
Eh, he's actually not that extremist in terms of the rhetoric he uses. The issue is more that he goes into an attack dog mode where he uses reasonable statements dishonestly and refuses to express the reasonable parts of the opposing side.

Honestly, if Finklestein was capable of calming down a bit and able to present his ideas without using inflammatory rhetoric he would probably be more capable of getting people behind him. Case in point, this video.
Sadly. He seems incapable of doing so 90% of the time...
yes, that and not cherrypicking quotes from historians to support a narrative that could be legit, but instead comes out as extremely slimy
I agree with a lot of what Finklestein says about this conflict but he too often manages to say it in an inherently dishonest manner. His takes on Ukraine though are just crazy nonsense.
33:50 people who are educated on the situation know X buzzword means Y buzzword
He's a moralist far before an actual historian which is why he can't keep it together. He was perfectly reasonable addressing what he perceives as the ingroup or even followers, but when he should actually argue points with someone his arrogance and false sense of moral superiority take control of his pushcart mouth.
Except it didn't work.

Oh wow. I actually had no idea Mr Finkle was a two stater. 😳

One slight slip of the tongue and they’d turn on him. Instead they just waited till he stopped talking and disregarded everything he said the moment they got the microphone back
Almost like they don't like jews, irrespective of what they think. A very tenuous acceptance of jews.

The "A one state solution just means they keep fighting each other, until one side wins, which will be Israel. So Israel can just keep fighting wars."-line is really dangerous. For Israel. Sure, Israel is militarily more powerful. But that is not so important. Israel has way way way more to lose than the Palestinians. They have build a remarkable society, technologically advanced, doing well economically, with a western-learning political and social structure. And with very strong western allies. Fighting forever until one side just gives up may mean Israel as we know it today is destroyed. And not by Hamas terrorists but rather from within. We already saw some of that during the protests around the Israeli Supreme Court. The argument for a two state solution being that Israeli and Palestinians have a fundamentally different view on how society and their country should function is also true for Arab Jews vs Western Jews. These two very different groups have not integrated at all since the foundation of Israel. Which could mean a two-state solution inside Israel. For Arab Jews and Western Jews.
And even if that weren't a problem, either Israel becomes more like their Arab neighbours. Or Israel's Arab neighbours become more like Israel. You can't have a rich western democracy open society surrounded by poor tyrannical Arab military or theocratic dictatorships. One rubs off on the other. So even if Arab Jews and Western Jews magically integrate overnight. Even if the Palestinians accept they lost, it is all their fault and they will do whatever Israel wants, and therefore magically become the Hong Kong of the Middle East, then still Israel has this huge problem of all their neighbours being failed states. Israel put all their eggs into the basket of military supremacy. And it turned out that no matter how many nukes they had, no matter how many super advanced jet fighters and missiles they had, on October 7th Jews were less save inside Israel then literally anywhere else on the planet. This is a huge problem for Israel. And it is a problem that never gets solved with military power. If this goes on for 70 more years, then rich liberal western Jews are simply going to leave Israel. The poor Palestinians can't leave even if they want to. They can't even go into Egypto or Israel. They are stuck. But rich Israeli can go anywhere they want. And what will be left will be just bloodthirstily lunatic Arabs that want a theocracy, a king, and fight wars until the end of time against other Arabs. Except, they have funny Hebrew names.
The fact you think Israel hasn’t already destroyed itself from within 👉🥹
I think you're underestimating the stubbornness of us Jews. Immigration applications have accelerated since October 7th, not dropped.
Also, Israel has managed to normalize most of its neighbors, the biggest issue being Iran, which the entire region hates. If a Palestinian state were established (with the right leadership) I'm convinced that over a lot of time they could normalize those relationships too.
Lonerbox is incorrect when he says destiny and finklestein want the same thing because destiny (and the pro-Israel side) don’t want/advocate for a fully autonomous and independent Palestinian state because of the potential security risk such a state might pose to Israel whereas finklestein does advocate for one regardless of the security risks. It’s all well and good to say you support a two state solution but I’m not sure if people who are not allowed to have a military or control their borders can be considered a state in any real sense of the word
The solution is a 20 year period of a coalition government. Enough time for a generation to grow up under improving relations. After that, if them having an independent military is not a security risk, they can form one, and enter into a defense pact with isreal.
Palestinian statehood is not going to come tomorrow. It will be a long process.
@@hermithefrog629the solution is adhering to international law and respecting the FACT that Palestinians have the EXACT SAME rights as every other people on the planet, and anyone or anything trying to stand in between them and FULL autonomy is literally a fascist regardless of their supposed motives
What security risk ? Israel has nukes no state can pose a serious security threat to Israel.
They also have the unlimited military support of the US.
Thé reason Hamas managed to enter Israel is cause of the insane incompetence of the IDF, they didn’t have any significant presence around Gaza and they didn’t even guard the wall at the time, they were sleeping in their barracks and woke up when Hamas had blown up the wall.
Israel existence isn’t threatened by Hamas, saying that is the equivalent of saying the Us existence was threatened by Islamist terrorist after 2001.
@@hermithefrog629 what type of freedoms and conditions will Palestinians live under for these twenty years to insure you end up with a generation with no resentment towards Israel and even such a generation grows up such that there is “peace” what incentive will Israel have to give them a state since there will be “peace “ so no more violence?
@@ni9274 "What security risk ? Israel has nukes no state can pose a serious security threat to Israel." - Israel having nukes is not a silver bullet. Nukes are an "ok everyone loses now - this includes us, but it also includes you" button. Israel might be doing strategic ambiguity in its nuclear doctrine, but the simple reality is you can present plenty of threats to a nuclear state where it won't use nukes because it just won't be worth it. If you need an example, look at the Russia-Ukraine war. The fighting is happening on territory Russia considers "theirs" after they "annexed it" following the "fully legitimate referendums". Meaning according to their internal logic, they'd be in the right to use nukes to "defend" it, as it's facing hostile armies on "Russian soil". That would actually overwhelm the Ukrainians for sure, who couldn't even retaliate in kind since they don't have nukes of their own - yet, the war remains completely conventional and it's virtually guaranteed it will until the end, whatever the final outcome is.

I'm sorry but I don't think Finkyboy deserves praise for trying to tone down some extreme rethoric in the name of political expediency and optics. He advises changing the slogan from "palestine" to "palestinians" because "we have to be direct with our messaging, we can't be ambiguous" but that change makes it MORE ambiguous. The former is basically only applicable to a 1 state solution, the latter is a milquetoast "palestinians deserve freedom", which is a better slogan to be fair, but also vague enough that it hides the true intent of those chanting, which I think is disingenuous. If you're gonna stand for something say it with your chest.
