I love Ichijou. He's my favorite social link. Back in 2015 I created a concept of what I thought Shadow Kou would look like. I would like to share the image with all of you here, but youtube does allow links in comments. So I'll try my best to describe it to you.
Kou's TV world is a televised basketball tournament taking the form of a royal palace and fairground. It's a play on how basketball has a "court". (Keep in mind, this was before Kamoshida was a thing). Shadow Kou's humanoid, pre-boss form wears a lavish bedtime robe, but his body is nearly transparent, fading away. It's an inversion of the "emperor has no clothes" trope, an invisible body with incredible clothing invoking a high station. At all times he is holding a silent baby wrapped in binds, who is the true ruler of the palace. Shadow Kou is just the royal caretaker and magician. His final trick will be making Kou disappear.
Shadow Kou: "You danced the dance. You jumped through all the right hoops. And now its time for your final performance. You must disappear... for her sake... their sake. Your very existence brings forth scandal, gossip and whispers that threatens her ladyship's blissful slumber. Would it not be kinder for everyone involved to simply let the fog swallow up the complications? Let them be a happy ordinary family without your presence. Yes. With you gone, she may be raised alone...as expected any first-born would... "
"Enough! Hecklers will not be tolerated! If you insist on interfering I will be forced to make you disappear as well!"
His boss form is a basketball hoop monster. The base of the hoop takes the form of severe-looking bed. Its bedframe is metallic and its mattress looks uncomfortable, like something you'd see in an orphanage. The feet of the bed take the form of grotesques baby arms and legs. The monster has six boney metal arms coming out of its torso. Two of them guard, arms outstretched. Two dribble a basketball between each other, sometimes throwing them. The final two hold up a baby crib like its the most precious thing in the world. Above the crib is an exaggeratedly large basketball hoop taking the form of a crib toy-dangler. The hoop is draped in white knitted cross-weaving making it look like a basketball net. Dangling from it are several stuffed, circus animals. An lion, a monkey, an elephant, and finally Shadow Kou himself. He and the other toys revolve around the baby's crib. He does a quick revolving motion whenever he casts spells.
Kou's persona would be the Caduceus, and evolve into Asclepius, god of medicine. Using mostly physical and healing spells.

Interesting. A Shadow that’s of two halves with the main ruler being the representation of someone else much like Shadow Wakaba being the true ruler of Futaba’s Palace because the main Shadow doesn’t hold itself in high enough esteem to be the ruler.

I've always loved how the friendships in Persona 4 seem so genuine compared to the other games, and nothing shows that better imo than Kou and Daisuke's relationship with Yu. I chose Kou's link my first playthrough and it almost made me cry (Naoki's was the one that did it for me). He's such a good guy, and his story is surprisingly complex for a character outside of the main storyline. I love the analysis, and I can't wait for next week's!

  • @serenepastel
    @serenepastel Рік тому +19

I really love Kou’s social link. I have a ton of friends who are adopted, so it was great seeing a well rounded character whose personhood included being a child of a knowing adoption. So many stories brush off adoption in exchange of the biological family (sometimes even referring to the biological as “their real parents”) or have it as a surprise twist. Not only is Kou knowingly adopted, he’s an example of a later in life adoption because he clearly remembers a time before his adoption. That’s such a rare representation in media!
This is a strange case of P5 making a P4 social link even better. Learning about the politics surrounding adoption and orphans/parentless children through those characters really demonstrates how fantastic Kou’s family is.
They’re a family. Vices, virtues, and other whatnot, they’re in this together. That’s all that matters.

in a sentence, "if a burden given to you is part of your identity, what happens when they take it away"
also another thing i picked up on - you mentioned "kou chan" for a sort of infantalisation but at the same time the basic rebellious nature of a child is what fueled him for the first half of his slink.

Kou is one of my fave links, after Yosuke. Kou is actually the 1st social link I teeechnically finished, not Yosuke (Yosuke was my 2nd finished link but my first completed team member).
I loved how complex his story was as well as his character. It also, narratively, asks a lot of big questions about the self, purpose, and life. Funnily enough, Kou feels like a positive mirror to Akechi in P5 and I feel that would be a VERY interesting analysis, specifically both on self-identity and the Japanese adoption system and even the city vs the country as around the world, when you compare the two there are distinct differences and cultures which can impact people for better or worse.

13:05 I'd even say that he has his informal speak in the translation, as you said, within the clip here
Saying stuff like "y'know" is likely what the translation uses as the example of "speaking like this", rather than formal words vs casual words, or anything akin to that. Contractions vs full words, formal tones instead of just speaking

I've never even played this game, but I love these videos so much since I'm interested in character writing, and this video had me tearing up. Also, the part about how devastating it was for Kou when his parents went from expecting so much of him to nothing was chilling, when I thought about how painful that situation and realization was for Ironmouse. Different circumstances, but both of their stories really show what a huge impact that switch in expectations can have on a kid. Like oh shit, something is really wrong or different now.
Anyways, keep up the good work!

Your defense of using Japanese honorifics in the English dubs really won me over.
I was never against them, but I have heard arguments about the usage of honorifics in English (it is appropriation or pandering or illogical or not?).
But your assertion about a full translation taking away some of the original meaning really got me thinking. The idea of things being lost in translation is nothing new, but using a median of translations is a concept I hadn't considered. A compromise of two languages - we get this sort of thing in media like A Clockwork Orange, A Song of Ice and Fire, Avatar (the James Cameron films) and lots of fantasy/sci-fi with mostly English with bits of other language mixed in. And while Persona is also fantastical, its languages are of the real world and can mimic the mix of languages seen in other media.

While I agree that the use of honorifics in the English translation is great, there are some big misses, such as translating Risecchi to Risette or, the even more egregious Yukaricchi to Yuka-tan in Persona 3. This last one is just baffling to me, I would somewhat understand "localising" the honorific, but changing it from one to another entirely? What were they thinking?
