I am shocked that people have the audacity to criticize your yard unless you have specifically asked for people's opinion. My gosh, what business is it of anyone's but you and Scott's? The internet, even after all these years on it, shocks me. Yikes. You guys work hard and try to prioritize. Your an inspiration with your love of trying make a nice and cozy home.
I’m not sure if it would help you, but my cousin had that same problem in her yard, but actually much worse. She planted a weeping willow tree there, it sucks up all that water. It’s dry now. It may help. P.S. I don’t think your yard looks like garbage. You have a beautiful home.
I’m American and my family has always used a dishpan. For your drainage area, I would put in French drain and then cover the area with a dry creek bed looking feature with river rock. That way it won’t be muddy and will help divert that water where you want it to go. If the city caused the issue, you and your neighbor might want to consider legal action to get the city pay for your yard repairs.
Who the heck is commenting about your yard? Gosh people have a lot of nerve... Sophia your home is beautiful and you are a Jill of all trades. If you can’t fix that yard, no one can! I love watching you clean and de clutter, it’s the best! Your dogs are also so cute, I love Electra’s ambivalence about going outdoors at the beginning of the video ☺️
I think Scott is right about the backyard. The drainage problem isn't going to change, so you can only do what you can do. You can do raised bed gardening which will help you monitor the amount of water for all your plants better. You wont have grass, but not having grass will cut back on spiders and critters. This is free advice... so you get what you pay for. good luck. love your channel.
We don't change clocks until November 3, 2019. I don't use a bin for doing dishes I insisted on having a double sink. I remember my aunt having a single sink and I hated doing dishes that way.
I recall my grandmother (many many years ago) had a farm style sink and she always used a basin in the sink. Her purpose was to be able to contain the soapy wash water in a basin and then have the ability to rinse when doing dishes. She did not have a dishwasher so everything was hand washed. I am putting in a new Kohler Neoroc black sink - farm style - this week and I will do the same as my grandmother. (I, however am upgrading to a new dishwasher too! )
Sofia you go above and beyond everyday. You are constantly going. To the people who say stupid things are only jealous of the hard worker you are and your amazing talents in so many different things. Even my husband is impressed of how your such a hard worker and go getter. I know it's easy for me to sit here and say don't let them people get to you they don't know every detail and they don't live your life. I am an OG fan of yours and I am very impressed with how much you have decluttered over the years. You've even inspired me to declutter a lot of my junk in my house, and to stop procrastinating so much an just get it done. I love your channel and your positive attitude. You keep being you and anyone who wants to criticize you can just go fly a kite. 😉 ❤️👍🙏💖
I can so relate to dealing with dogs and rain. Our lab, Lucy, acts just like Electra. She expects me to make it stop raining and dry up the grass....she apparently doesn't know she's a water dog!! Electra and her "husband", Le Chiffre, are adorable and I love how you interact with them! ❤
Maybe you can make a small quilt on the wall so the chairs don't scratch it. Be careful when you open the cabinet above the Keurig, it hits your bowl above the doorway. Love all of your videos! ❤
I just gave my son a call, he's a Civil Engineer. I sent him the video and asked for his advice. He said its a shame the neighborhood seems to have all the rainwater diverted to the backyards and not to the street. e He can see where this is a great problem. We were discussing reasonable solutions and he said a small "bioretention pond" in the back might help a little. I mentioned a drycreek ditch and he said it might help some. Also if you could put a sort of sub pump in the bottom and pipe the water out to the street. He also mentioned it is very important to keep the water away from the garage and it's foundation as the wetness can"invite" termites and foundation damage. I hope this helps a little!!
That is what we have in mind. A dry creek with a pump ( we already bought the pump). I need to dig up the back of the garage about 2 ft deep. Line. Put a french drain and cover with gravel. Then do the entire back as a river bed that would keep the top dry and the water would stay under. The neighbor behind us pretty much list his entire yardn trees have dies. Even his ground cover died. The problem is that the source either goes left or right depending. In the video it was going right towards the other neighbor. Sometimes it goes into our yard and moves on the the next neighbor. He already installed all his french drains when he bought the house.
@@mygreatchallenge If you need to rent equipment to run the pipe to the street: a local man actually invented the " Ditch Witch". It digs narrow trenches for pipes and such. My hubby rented a similar machine the other day to dig a trench to his shop and run an electric line in it. It dug right through rocks and everything and just pulverized them! Really worked well and was very reasonable on the rental $. I wish we lived closer and could help out!!
Mrs. Sophia, time doesn't change until Nov 3rd.. This coming Sunday.... But if you worked today (and I bet you did) , I am sure you arrived an hour early. You have so much on your plate, it's no wonder you are confused about the time change..And as far as people giving you grief over your yard, well some people have nothing better to do than throw stones... I saw your yard in this video and while you do have a drainage problem, I don't think your yard is garbage.. My back yard is not great either but it's mine and that counts for something.. So don't let people bring you down or hurt your feelings over your yard. And you can buy something called GROW BAGS to plant your tomatoes (and other veggies) in and you wont have to plant them in your yard... You could turn your entire yard into concrete and buy the grow bags and still have a beautiful garden... I know you are very busy, but if you get a second to yourself, just research the grow bags... I watch ALOT of homestead videos and I have seen homesteaders use those grow bags to grow some of their veggies in .. And those veggies are BEAUTIFUL.. Ok, now that I have written you a book to read, lol , I will leave you alone.. lol May God continue to bless and keep you and your precious family..
Hi Sophia , you may have had this suggestion already but here in the UK we have foam floats our kids use to learn to swim called pool noodles , they are like a foam tube , I don't know if you have them in the US ? You can cut them to the length of your dogs collar & thread it through . It stops her from biting herself as she can't reach but isn't as cumbersome as a cone . Hope this helps 😘❤️
I've always kept a wash basin in the sink. Good place to keep the dirty dishes until you get to them. Leaves a good free space in the sink. Tossed my Keurig to the curb, I only use a French press now... The Keurigs are quick, but they're hard to clean. Wow, lots of water in the backyard. Looks like you and your neighbors are sharing a very low spot...hence the puddling. I noticed the water is running downhill from your neighbors yard. Cheapest way I see is to plant some good shrubs around the border of the yard and put down a ton of mulch to keep the neighbors run-off out of your yard. Only other cheap way I see is to dig a trench from the back to the road out front along the fence line. Great vid, house is looking great! Mulch, mulch and more mulch around the borders of your yard. It will keep the neighbors water from draining into your yard and it's cheap. Another cheap solution is to raise the level of the backyard by having some dirt hauled in and plant a ton of grass. Grass eats water fast. Okay, I'm out of ideas.lol Forgot to add...our lil doggy developed an allergy to his food, along with colon problems. He was chewing bare spots around his butt and belly was inflamed. He's getting old, vet said he needed to be on a low fat EN gastroenteric food. The high fat diet was making him miserable and itchy. Purina EN gastroenteric...ain't cheap, but he stopped chewing his butt and belly cleared up. I mix boiled shredded chicken breast in with it to make it go further.
We tossed our Keurig to the side also. We had had 2 but they were not only a pain to clean, but so much so that the coffee quality went down. We bought a Krups regular coffeemaker about a year ago. Paper filters, Folgers coffee, and makes 10 cups at a time.
When we lived in the NE, our backyard had underground springs, so when we got rain, it turned into a lake! We couldn't mow the lawn or use a portion of the yard at all. Scott's idea of laying gravel is excellent. You can still grow your tomatoes - just in a raised bed. ;) Container gardening might be best. An office/quilting room will be so nice!!
Just wondering if your street has good drainage. If so, maybe the water could be directed there. I’m so sorry you have this issue. We had a drainage problem years ago but spent a lot 😫 to fix it.
I really liked this video Sophia. I basically like all your videos... you are so real with us. I totally feel your pain and aggravation with running water thru the yard... we have these same issues in our yard when it rains. I live in the country and don’t have the problems of city zoning and govts... but I do have to have the money, time and energy to dig a trench and divert water... that takes effort! Your house is a work in progress. You do lots of things to make improvements... the yard will happen too. I love how your kitchen looks when it’s all tidy and clean.. you give great inspiration. I am like you, I don’t have my “own space” to do all the things I want to do. I care put little corners here and there and make do! Great job Sophia!
I like the solution of putting your stuff on the shelf under the counter. It is tucked away but you can get it anytime you sit at the counter. Now you just have the chairs in that corner which looks so much better. Sorry about the water in your yard. That really sucks. Your dog's are adorable :) looking forward to see what Willie will be for Halloween. :)
Nice organization! You are an inspiration! I think you should get rid of one of the chairs so that you have more space and can easily access all your stuff in the cupboards below
Where I live runoff is a big problem certain times of year. Perhaps dig out where you want to divert the water and add river rock. Make a faux river. You can make it decorative and attractive. It would be cheaper than the french drain system and less drastic.
Your dogs are adorable, I love seeing them in your vlogs. We also had a soggy bottom of our garden, my husband dug a really deep it and filled it with gravel and then grass, it improved it so much. I think Your husband’s idea though 👍
Sophia, consider using that corner just as your office. With the kitchen decor in mind outfit it as you might a closet office. I personally think that's your solution as its not used as much for anything else. Check with your vet but a lot of dogs suffer from seasonal allergies and they create bald patches that become hot spots. Otherwise it could be a parasite such as fleas. Either way medication could be called for. I adore you and your family including the fur babies, all 3. Thanks for all the inspiration and time you put into your videos.💜
I think you will save so much on your heating bills, you can sort out the drainage in your garden very soon. I love to see your Corningware collection, it’s so colourful and reminds me of home.
Lovely Sophia 💜, how nice of Bill to send you those lovely Spice of Life Canisters 👍🏻. We can’t wait to see Willies costume for Halloween 🎃. I’m so sad thats the end of marching band 😞. Don’t let the negative people get to you, it’s like the old saying “those who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones”. You are such an inspiration to everyone. Thank you for sharing. We love y’all 💜❤️💕🐶🐶🐱
We had a dog that did the same thing years ago and 3 vets couldn't figure it out. We tried one last time and were told it was flea allergy. Our dog didn't have fleas. We checked him all over and didn't find any. The vet said some dogs are highly allergic and all it takes is one. He was right in our case. Just had to tell you in case you have a rare dog too. I really like your channel and the fact you're an animal person makes it even better. :)
I dont comment usually, but the dish pan subject interests me! I'm 63 yrs. Old and of Irish decent. My family has always used a dish pan but we were always poor as church mice so I doubt it began to avoid damaging our sink. Hiwever, at war time in the UK I'm aware that the citizens were experts at not wasting anything as encouraged by the British government. Yes, the dish water absolutely was used to water small veggie gardens an was also used to do small cleaning jobs outside...maybe cleaning off the brick pathway leading to the front door, etc.
My husband was a concreter and he says you will need to get a plumber/ drainage contractor to install some large drains to trap the water and run it into either existing roof water/ stormwater drains or install new ones. Will need to get the water out onto the street.
I also use a dishpan in the sink. I have a double and keep one on one side. It seemed growing up everyone had one. I think Scott is right with the rocks but almost maybe like a dam in the back at your fence by the neighbors. Don't get down home projects never ending
You need a French drain system to bring the water out to the street drain. You are fortunate you don’t have water in your basement. Our other home had a big water problem in the basement. My husband put in a French drain around the house and diverted the water in the yard and the water from the gutters out to the street drain. Worked like a charm. 😊
Susan Niesen my husband is in construction so he did the labor but the materials are not that expensive. Mostly just perforated pipe. The french drains don’t need to be very deep. All can be found at Home Depot or Lowes.
My Great Challenge thank goodness the pump keeps you dry. When you are able in the future think about the French drain. Does not have to be deep at all. 😊
Ever think of getting a garbage disposal? Yes, it takes up some space under the sink, however, you could eliminate the little trash can from the counter.
I’ve recently discovered your channel and wanted to thank you! I was particularly moved by one of your earlier videos in which you touch on the opportunity you had to join the FBI in your younger years, and how you still regret the decision you made at the time. Then I suddenly realised who you remind me of - the actress Olivia Colman who plays the part of the spectacular Detective Sergeant Ellie Miller in the TV series Broadchurch. DS Miller also has two sons :-) Sending you warm regards from Sydney, Australia.
My grandparents always used a wash basin in their sink. They also dumped their dirty water in the garden. I assumed it was a Depression thing, but that's cool to know that they do that in other countries too.
Sophia, You know those cabinet spaces under your counter.... check out "pullout shelves" like your pantry has. (sometimes called sliding, rolling, or rollout). Home depot has some. You could pullout and access your office supplies while on your chair, as well as cookbook access. www.homedepot.com/s/pullout%2520shelf?NCNI-5
love your dogs xoxo mine do the same thing - they want to go out, but then they want to come back in. they just want us to entertain them ALL the TIME!!! lol
The pups were so adorable today!!!! I loved seeing them in all there cuteness 💚 We are close to being "empty nesters" so I'm hoping to have two guest rooms or at least one and the other be a office/craftroom/library. Not ready though for that season of our life. Miss my kiddis being small.
I’m part of the dog out/oops raining/ back-in/whine group! I also use a dishpan in my sink, but I don’t have a dish washer. The water situation in the yard is a nightmare - I dealt with that when I lived in Missouri and I had to get a landscaping engineer to come do some major work, grading, filling, French drain....it was pricey...but thankfully the builder end up paying the bill on both my house and my neighbors.
I used vinegar to descale my glass kettle - does a great job....and the dog with the lampshade on his neck was making me laugh everytime he hit the camera stand - gave me a great chuckle.....
Sofia, as a temporary solution you might put a rubber wedge into the swivel mechanism of the chairs so that they remain stationary. The wash basin is a wonderful idea, in the deep sinks at our church we use two tubs, one facing downward and the second one placed on top of it to wash in. By using two it raises the washing level and is much more comfortable on those lower backs. I love your videos. Forget the nay sayers, if they don’t have anything good to say, they shouldn’t say anything at all.
A bowl in the sink for me is just one more thing that needs cleaning. I watched a sewing channel their pet also had a wound at the same place on it's rear end when taken to the vet it turns out the pet had been bitten. House is looking so good. When the boys move out your bedroom would be great as a sewing room it's out of the way no need to leave the room all day with the on suite and at the end of the day you can just come down the stairs and close the door.
Our dog did that chewing by the tail. She was a Lhasa Apso and the vet said it was diet related, so she always had to have the pink Iams and it cleared that from bothering her. It's so odd when that comes from nowhere. She would rub and bite and chew at it. At the time the Iams was newer, IDK what they have now for best diet? We use senior dog food for this border collie mix, but the dog's still a chub! Wonder where he gets it??? Lol. And guess what? He incessantly licks his right lower leg open, esp if it's storming. He would LIVE in a cone of shame! I even made him a special sock for that leg. Dogs...adorable.
The beagle could have a hot spot. My dogs get them when something unusual is happening that makes them unsettled. You can shave the hair off and spray with Cantaspray which will get rid of it really quick
When our son had his last band competition, I cried. It was so sad to me! But when I reminded him that it was his last, he said, "thank God!!!" As much as He had loved band, he was ready for it to end. When you talked about crying at Edward's last competition, it brought back those memories.
I remember when my daughter did her last year or chorus, I was so sad, I cried. I actually have 1 last video of her singing and I'm keeping it! 🤣💐💜(the rooms will be for you, you said it right the first time!) 👍🏾
Awww good to see Electra; she's so cute. So is LeChiffe; don't know if I spelled his name right. Bless him I hope he's better soon and can lose the cone. You can see they love you so much Sophia☺
Yep washing up bowls everywhere here in Britain, My foreign flatmates look at them as though they are a strange thing. You can slosh half-drunk cups of tea etc down the side to go down the plughole instead of making the water brown! A washing up bowl is often used as all sorts of other things too like emergency leak catcher and vomit bowl, yuck, lol!!
I finally got new appliances and my kitchen looks like a tornado passed through. I had to empty the pantry and a lot of the cabinets so they could get to water and electricity. Tomorrow I get the range and the garbage dispisal installed after that only the water purifier and softener are left. YEAH! I have always used a dishpan it was a habit that I picked up from my Mother-in-law.
Have you decided on the color of the front door? How about painting the swing chair the same color of the door. What color are you going to paint the front deck? I wish I was there to help you!
I think you need to call in an expert to figure out where that much water is coming from, and what possible solutions are. This looks like a lot of water is coming from your neighbors yard into yours. There may be city laws regarding how and how much water can be diverted down your driveway to a storm sewer, but perhaps a buried drain in rocks along the far side of the garage to the street. That’s a heck of a lot of water!
Hey Sophia, your yard is fine. Y'all are hard workers and do the best you can. I would be highly PO'd if water was diverted to my yard. Is there any way you can divert the water to an underground drainage system to a street drain? Your kitchen was fine too, you did fantastic with your corner!!! Hard to believe that Edward is in his last year of HS....I am happy you got time to quilt and be in your "Happy" place!!! Thanks for the reminder of the time change! Have a great day you wonderful Lady!💖👍😄☔💧TFS.😊
It is cost prohibitive to get the drainage underground and send to the curb or sewage. That being said. Yes we are pissed. The other neighbor and us already complained to the city and they said it was approved so there is nothing we can do. The problem is that they diverted the source when they dug up their basement expansion. The yard was already swampy but now it s even worse. It would be between 35 and 45k to bury the drainage and send to the curb while raising the yard. It s a major undertaking. A rock garden with dry rivers is our best best option.

Your dog's are adorable :) looking forward to see what Willie will be for Halloween. :)
Nice organization! You are an inspiration! I think you should get rid of one of the chairs so that you have more space and can easily access all your stuff in the cupboards below
I like Scott's yard idea. You could arrange it like an English Cottage gardne. Maybe tomatoes would survive in new hardscape planters?
Your dogs are the sweetest !
I laughed so hard when you were showing us the top parts of the coffee machine and just kept going..🤣😂
Tfs & take care xx 🌹🇦🇺
Where I live runoff is a big problem certain times of year. Perhaps dig out where you want to divert the water and add river rock. Make a faux river. You can make it decorative and attractive. It would be cheaper than the french drain system and less drastic.
We re doing both. Have to. The soil is mostly clay pan. It has very little percolation.
@@mygreatchallenge I told Eric, my son, that I wasn't sure of what type soil you had. Now, I know. You're right , clay is hard to drain !
I'm sure whatever you do will be lovely. I love to garden and can't where we live because of different issues. Love the videos! Thanks. 😀
We love y’all 💜❤️💕🐶🐶🐱
Yes Gina, Sophia had me thinking I forgot to turn the clocks back..lol
🤣 your convo with the dogs that’s what I thought crickets 🦗 And Cone of shame!
The scene where your dog went to kiss you was so cute ❤
My husband was a concreter and he says you will need to get a plumber/ drainage contractor to install some large drains to trap the water and run it into either existing roof water/ stormwater drains or install new ones. Will need to get the water out onto the street.
I started using the Freedom Filer system about 4 years ago. Great way to keep paper clutter under control.
I can see your top soil being washed away. That's why the rain water is that light brown colour. I think your idea of a water garden is a good idea.
I always have a plastic tub in one side of my sink, and a rubber mat on the rinse side
I also use a dishpan in the sink. I have a double and keep one on one side. It seemed growing up everyone had one. I think Scott is right with the rocks but almost maybe like a dam in the back at your fence by the neighbors. Don't get down home projects never ending
A F
rench Drain would be the best for the drainage areas.
I agree, a French drain along the back side may help... just a thought
Besides all the mentioned reasons for using a dishpan it can also save a lot of water.
holy cow! your yard it crazy. you have a lake!
Omg I love how the dogs keep saying....”Mom, Mom, Mom?!!!” 😂😂😂♥️
You need a French drain system to bring the water out to the street drain. You are fortunate you don’t have water in your basement. Our other home had a big water problem in the basement. My husband put in a French drain around the house and diverted the water in the yard and the water from the gutters out to the street drain. Worked like a charm. 😊
I have a sum pump in the basement.
Sofia, I love that your dog loves you so much.
Your hair looks good, love the curls
I agree! ❤️
Trace Gates that’s a great idea!
We use a basin in Ireland too!
love your dogs xoxo mine do the same thing - they want to go out, but then they want to come back in. they just want us to entertain them ALL the TIME!!! lol
We change our time in Michigan on Nov 3 next Sunday.
Ken and Vicky Bremer when she said that I had to google it to make sure I didn’t miss it. Nov 3 for us.
The pups were so adorable today!!!! I loved seeing them in all there cuteness 💚
We are close to being "empty nesters" so I'm hoping to have two guest rooms or at least one and the other be a office/craftroom/library.
Not ready though for that season of our life. Miss my kiddis being small.
umm doesn't the time change happen this weekend Nov 3? I'm confused lol
Angie W me too???
I’m part of the dog out/oops raining/ back-in/whine group! I also use a dishpan in my sink, but I don’t have a dish washer. The water situation in the yard is a nightmare - I dealt with that when I lived in Missouri and I had to get a landscaping engineer to come do some major work, grading, filling, French drain....it was pricey...but thankfully the builder end up paying the bill on both my house and my neighbors.
I use vinegar to clean the coffemaker. Our dogs also sit at the door looking at us like we’re nuts, expecting them to go out in the rain!
Oh, those adorable dogs!
I used vinegar to descale my glass kettle - does a great job....and the dog with the lampshade on his neck was making me laugh everytime he hit the camera stand - gave me a great chuckle.....
Don't let people upset you most of the time the people who are telling you have worse yards live for you and your family forget about the rest
So satisfying watching you clean your sink! Xx
Attach a section of plexiglass to the wall where your chair rubs, it works great and blends in as it's see through.
Thanks for motivating me to clean today!! My house is a wreck and I have company coming ! 🌸💜👍
I love your 2 level drying rack! Looking for one to fit under my cabinets.
In the Netherlands we use a plastic tub in the sink!
Can also use vinegar instead of Lime Away to clean coffee machine.
I always used a plastic pan in my sink because my Aunt Mildred did.
Hi there time change next week!
Hi Sophia, For your corner in the kitchen, maybe you can find a corner 3 tier shelve at the Goodwill.
time change is next weekend! you confused me lol
Search double barstool bench? I just did, lots of cute choices, good prices. Target has a blue green choice for $100.
Your corner looks great. I have 4 Razcogs carts from IKEA. I use them all in my craft room.
🤣💐💜(the rooms will be for you, you said it right the first time!) 👍🏾
I have the same issue with my dog wanting to lick my clean dishes. Makes me crazy! 😂😂
Well done you! Not easy dealing with a swampy garden 😕
Awww good to see Electra; she's so cute. So is LeChiffe; don't know if I spelled his name right. Bless him I hope he's better soon and can lose the cone. You can see they love you so much Sophia☺
My daughter is in Color Guard at her high school. One more year!
I will miss the performances. Band competition, and football games!!
My yard looks the same as yours, when it rains. We call it the swamp
Do your clocks change a different time than CT? They changed in England, but not here yet I think...😅
Yeah I realize that. It s next week.
Pups are so sweet
