Been wanting to hear somebody play that one and execute it well...Txsu didn't fail 🔥🔥🔥 Hero played JSU was a very different choice but in a good way... They actually put a alot of effort into that one... I liked it... Very unexpected💥💥💥 So from 1:32 - 6:16 or 4:14 Is all I needed to hear from this 5th even though I listened to the whole thing... IMO...Txsu did to Jsu what Jsu did to Southern in the 5th... The Boom sound great but The Ocean just had much better songs... It's all subjective depending on your expectations tho... They were all set up in the same spot on the 50. We all saw that. Even here you can barely see the captain from Txsu. All media was on the 50 yard line so yall quit. We were there.

what people fail to realize is the home band in a 5th is responsible for responding and countering. the Southern Girl sounded good but wasn't necessarily a "good response" to what was played. They waited to play ballads later in the rounds when they could've responded with it during the round. The other part is TXSU counter melodies get lost because the arrangers are arranging for instrumentation they don't. the trumpets supporting and trombones and baritones didn't know the song completely and you can hear it. listen starting at 2:30. tubas pooting out notes too. now to me TXSU is the best band the boom has faced all year but let's not pretend it was close because they sound better than last year. the Boom wasn't perfect but executed and sounded better on the arrangements that were in front of them. People giving credit for what the arrangements should've sounded like from TXSU

Ok so after listening to the whole thing, here are my thoughts….JSU was more powerful than TXsU..But TXsU was just as clean…They both sounded great and had great balance. A slight edge goes to JSU because there was a couple of parts in TXsU songs that sounded like they didn’t all know. So JSU for the win!!
JSU has a formula right now that most other bands are trying to figure out. Their book is growing each week and being well executed. While still doing new field shows!!! But overall great jobs to both bands. This battle was great for the culture. From a TSU(Tnstate) alum.
I was at the game last night and the Boom was filling that stadium up with sound all night especially Dawg team and trumpfunk... Great battle, like last yr i gave the Boom the W off song selection alone.
JSU won no doubt about it. Clean, powerful, and music was well executed. They have the wow factor for me. To top it off, they are fun and entertaining to watch and listen to that I don’t see other bands have.

That comes with the territory of being the best. You work hard to get to #1 and you have to work twice as hard to stay there because everyone wants your spot. The next couple years will determine the SBOTS staying power. Everyone brings their A game against the best.

Something is off and that fourth selection can politely go to hayell, Boom. Maybe it's just too early in the season for me to be listening and expecting greatness from the tubas. I live for DT, but something is definitely lacking. I don't keep up with the goings ons with the classes and whatnot (graduated THEE 20+ years ago), but I'm praying DT is simply full of babies who are still learning how to WOMP. Forever I #luvdaBOOM though 💙

Speaking of collegiate, I’m going with Texas Southern for having a more diverse selection. #TSUwins JSU was going for Diversity too, but didn’t know that was TSU’s game plan. If TSU would’ve stuck to their rap tunes, JSU would’ve won. Congrats to both bands but TSU got this.
It’s fascinating to me to read all the comments comparing sections and years and arguing over got who. We just can’t simply enjoy a good battle, we always gotta declare a winner🤷🏾♂️ Having marched in the Boom 34 years ago (crab ‘90), I listen for the melodic differences in the tunes and not so much the power behind it. I’ve always loved The Ocean because they always came to The Vet when other bands didn’t travel long distances, so it’s always good to hear them. The biggest difference I heard (in person) last night was woodwinds…. JSU arranges different phrasing for piccs and flutes so you hear them clearly on every tune. Other bands don’t consistently do that. I’ll always love my Boom, but the both bands sounded good to me. 👏🏾
I think we all been waiting on jsu high brass and boy we got em this year. Them young bulls pushing. And the crazy part is, jsu is showcasing them on damn near every song this year. They are like "look what we got this year"!!!!!
Them mellos still waiting to hit puberty and them 1ST tpets the only ones screaming at the END of phrases, they ain't scream not 1 phrase. You can't even the hear the tpets when the 1st aren't screaming on the last notes.

Jackson State with the overall win. A much cleaner and crisper presentation. The arrangements from the Sonic Boom were like no other. JSU sounds more experienced and seasoned. It was like…a senior vs a sophomore band. If that makes sense. Choreography was more entertaining from the ladies at JSU. Although the ladies at TxSU on their last song put up a show. I think it may have been a sort of tribute to the performance the jsu ladies did last year? Or an imitation of that. But nonetheless, good 5th from both bands! JSU hands down with the W in my opinion 🔥
I wanna give a shoutout to the Boom! To start off with Southern, then travel to Grambling and TxSU back to back I know is tiresome. Then go have new books each game… Boom is working hard over there!

Dawg team dropped the ball but overall I’m going with JSU simply off power and cleanliness! Tsxu was bringing heat too tho don’t get me wrong. But a slight edge to jsu -W
JSU came with their usual Saturday game selections thinking TXSU had nothing up their sleeve. Song Choice and Arrangements wins over Cranking. JSU had no interesting music. Ran thru their R&B songs. Fell off on Silk climax. The Disco tune “Hero” was their best song! So give them 4-1. You can even charity them a 3-2. Pen still won. And apparently TSU pulled out the bag what was supposed to against this type of contender. JSU played it down, but didn’t know TSU was standing on bitness! TSU for the W. Diverse selection at that!
JSU had no interesting music TO YOU. Just because you don’t know the song selections doesn’t mean you can judge one band better than the other. That’s why if takes people who listen to all genres to fairly judge a battle!
Good battle and good to see TxSU was able to lick their self-inflicted wounds from last year. Plus, they honored last year’s Sette with their final number.
The Boom won this hands down!! Baby southern definitely put up a fight. However, motion counts cannot compete with the Settes!!! Motion get back diss wasn’t effective at all!!
I was lied to by people saying that the Ocean was as good as the Boom in the 5th. I convinced that some people really don't know what clean or balanced mean. A couple of the Ocean's songs sound like they didn't 100% know them. Not sure why people think they had the better song selection either. They were definitely much better than Southern and Grambling. The Boom definitely took 3 rounds minimum. They definitely left an opening for the Ocean in the last round, but maybe I just personally don't like the song, but TxSU even though it was a nice arrangement, I think it could have been executed better. A couple of songs TxSU seemed to kind of lose it at a point or two. Round 3 was kind of tough to judge in my opinion. I'll probably go back to listen to the battle a couple of more times. Also, I can tell when the BOOM has won and people don't want to admit it. They usually say it something like "it was a tie, but the BOOM didn't do xxx."
Last year, JSU was tearing everybody up. They don't have the same intensity. Their trumpet section is top-tier but the dawg team is letting me down this year…😒
Both bands did a wonderful job. As for me, TSU Ocean of Soul sound and selections definitely secured the WIN. Motion ATE the Jsettes UP, as well. Well done band, Mr. Simmons and to the entire Ocean Staff. 🌊🌊👍🏽🔥🔥
IMO, both bands did a good job as well as both dance teams but the Sonic Boom and J-Settes took the W for me! I see in the comments that most people think TXSU whooped JSU but that's so far from the truth. From beginning to end, I was more entertained with what the Boom presented with their selections. Their sound was more balanced, controlled, the composition was on point and the Settes were more creative, innovative and just on fire in those stands. I think TXSU had some hit and misses with their song choices and execution. They can be a powerful band at times but they need to be more consistent in several ways bc they definitely had tempo issues with Hero and some sections were losing their breath at distinct moments. But in comparison to last year, this was a major improvement for TXSU and I think that should be noted. Great job for the comeback but they did not succeed in getting their lick back! & since when does Motion BUCK so much??!! I was appalled at some of their new counts. I advise that they get in the lab and come up with fresh material that reflects THEIR style. It was too close to comfort for me, very weird. Otherwise, I think the diss at the end to the J-Settes from Motion was soooo last year! It's cute that they are still mad over it - that's Legendary Laniea for you!! Props to Ms. Kayla King for giving the crowd 'battle girl' energy but please do something new and not replicate what another team has already done. Imitation is the oldest form of flattery!!

2 years in a row have been an epic battle between both bands. Great song selections from both bands. Outstanding musicianship displayed by both bands.

Having marched in the Boom 34 years ago (crab ‘90), I listen for the melodic differences in the tunes and not so much the power behind it.
I’ve always loved The Ocean because they always came to The Vet when other bands didn’t travel long distances, so it’s always good to hear them.
The biggest difference I heard (in person) last night was woodwinds…. JSU arranges different phrasing for piccs and flutes so you hear them clearly on every tune. Other bands don’t consistently do that.
I’ll always love my Boom, but the both bands sounded good to me. 👏🏾

I think we all been waiting on jsu high brass and boy we got em this year. Them young bulls pushing. And the crazy part is, jsu is showcasing them on damn near every song this year. They are like "look what we got this year"!!!!!
Them mellos still waiting to hit puberty and them 1ST tpets the only ones screaming at the END of phrases, they ain't scream not 1 phrase. You can't even the hear the tpets when the 1st aren't screaming on the last notes.
@pointblank5750 we have to be hearing a different sound because I can hear those trumpets swinging the entire 5th. Do you hear how clean those trumpets sound on I need a hero? Articulating every note while sitting in the upper register. Not sluring or skating.

Ocean took the dub, but JSU is by far the best sounding visiting band I’ve heard at a TSU game.
TxSU won this easily with song selection and arrangements. JSU actually didn’t do bad, TxSU just battled them well. JSU media is more fair than Ocean Media with camera/mic position, and it’s still a W for Texas. Brian said “Be Prepared” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Jackson State with the overall win. A much cleaner and crisper presentation. The arrangements from the Sonic Boom were like no other. JSU sounds more experienced and seasoned. It was like…a senior vs a sophomore band. If that makes sense. Choreography was more entertaining from the ladies at JSU. Although the ladies at TxSU on their last song put up a show. I think it may have been a sort of tribute to the performance the jsu ladies did last year? Or an imitation of that. But nonetheless, good 5th from both bands! JSU hands down with the W in my opinion 🔥

I wanna give a shoutout to the Boom! To start off with Southern, then travel to Grambling and TxSU back to back I know is tiresome. Then go have new books each game… Boom is working hard over there!
Texas Southern has forever been consistent. I remember them playing "knockin pictures off the wall" in 2000... Man!!!

Dawg team dropped the ball but overall I’m going with JSU simply off power and cleanliness! Tsxu was bringing heat too tho don’t get me wrong. But a slight edge to jsu -W
JSU came with their usual Saturday game selections thinking TXSU had nothing up their sleeve. Song Choice and Arrangements wins over Cranking. JSU had no interesting music. Ran thru their R&B songs. Fell off on Silk climax. The Disco tune “Hero” was their best song! So give them 4-1. You can even charity them a 3-2. Pen still won. And apparently TSU pulled out the bag what was supposed to against this type of contender. JSU played it down, but didn’t know TSU was standing on bitness! TSU for the W. Diverse selection at that!
JSU had no interesting music TO YOU. Just because you don’t know the song selections doesn’t mean you can judge one band better than the other. That’s why if takes people who listen to all genres to fairly judge a battle!

To me JSU had the better overall sound and execution. They sounded better in general. TSU is improving each season.

The Boom won this hands down!! Baby southern definitely put up a fight. However, motion counts cannot compete with the Settes!!! Motion get back diss wasn’t effective at all!!
I was lied to by people saying that the Ocean was as good as the Boom in the 5th. I convinced that some people really don't know what clean or balanced mean. A couple of the Ocean's songs sound like they didn't 100% know them. Not sure why people think they had the better song selection either. They were definitely much better than Southern and Grambling. The Boom definitely took 3 rounds minimum. They definitely left an opening for the Ocean in the last round, but maybe I just personally don't like the song, but TxSU even though it was a nice arrangement, I think it could have been executed better. A couple of songs TxSU seemed to kind of lose it at a point or two. Round 3 was kind of tough to judge in my opinion. I'll probably go back to listen to the battle a couple of more times. Also, I can tell when the BOOM has won and people don't want to admit it. They usually say it something like "it was a tie, but the BOOM didn't do xxx."

Last year, JSU was tearing everybody up. They don't have the same intensity. Their trumpet section is top-tier but the dawg team is letting me down this year…😒

Both bands did a wonderful job. As for me, TSU Ocean of Soul sound and selections definitely secured the WIN. Motion ATE the Jsettes UP, as well. Well done band, Mr. Simmons and to the entire Ocean Staff. 🌊🌊👍🏽🔥🔥
IMO, both bands did a good job as well as both dance teams but the Sonic Boom and J-Settes took the W for me! I see in the comments that most people think TXSU whooped JSU but that's so far from the truth.
From beginning to end, I was more entertained with what the Boom presented with their selections. Their sound was more balanced, controlled, the composition was on point and the Settes were more creative, innovative and just on fire in those stands. I think TXSU had some hit and misses with their song choices and execution. They can be a powerful band at times but they need to be more consistent in several ways bc they definitely had tempo issues with Hero and some sections were losing their breath at distinct moments. But in comparison to last year, this was a major improvement for TXSU and I think that should be noted. Great job for the comeback but they did not succeed in getting their lick back!
& since when does Motion BUCK so much??!! I was appalled at some of their new counts. I advise that they get in the lab and come up with fresh material that reflects THEIR style. It was too close to comfort for me, very weird. Otherwise, I think the diss at the end to the J-Settes from Motion was soooo last year! It's cute that they are still mad over it - that's Legendary Laniea for you!! Props to Ms. Kayla King for giving the crowd 'battle girl' energy but please do something new and not replicate what another team has already done. Imitation is the oldest form of flattery!!
