big respect to LSU because I didnt expect this 5th to be that interesting. A PWI/HBCU 5th quarter cross over is epic
Yo I was there from start to finish. In the words of my daughter who is 13 & seeing SU & LSU for the first time. She said Southern takes your breath away. Its not the fact that they are extremely loud but each section sounds like 1 horn. She also said that SU plays every note like they saying it with their chest.
Wow, this is truly an advanced observation. I can definitely see musicianship in her future! Having been born and raised in Louisiana, both bands are like home to me. Both institutions have a distinct culture that brings together both communities. Truly an historical event!
Wow, that's good. I haven't that description before!
That’s how i felt when i heard southern the first time
They gonna beat our ass during the boombox classic. Im not afraid to admit lmao
I never thought bout it like that....we do say it with our chest lol. Not even when I marched did anyone put it like that lol
I love how both bands stayed true to their identities and didn’t try to force selections to fit the other band… Kudos to both, my Jaguars though… wow…. Great job.
I'm just happy AF that BR has two damn good bands. This matchup was LONG overdue!!!
This was overdue.
The SU Jukebox is in Death Valley and their tubas sound like a damm horror movie at 21:43 ( you better not come in here this is our stadium) 😩
Those tubas are tone to the max!!!
There only 1 band in BR...
It's the Human JUKEBOX
Facts
For real
The power SU plays with is unreal. Ppl underestimate how hard it is to be loud and still have great tone.
I must admit, LSU truly surprised me. They were clean, and balanced throughout for the most part. Technically, very sound. But when SU played, you coul literally feel their entire being, in every note. It certainly comes from a different place, one band (LSU) predominantly the art form, the other (SU), heart, soul, life experiences, history, projection for the future, all combined with yet a technically balanced sound.
I love this
Wow what a great comment. Coming from a TnSU fan..AoB
This was a quality 5th a lot better than I expected.
To sound like an English person LOL but seriously. It was a proper fifth quarter. No lag between songs, both of them played very well. Love the best 5th quarters I've seen in years
Respect to lsu fasho they sound damn good FRFR and this shows me that can't no band just run up on them like dat!! Big ups to both ban tho
I'm SU all day!!! I really like the balanced sound of LSU though. Wasn't expecting such a well projected sound from them. This battle was good for the band culture.
Dr. Jones went to JSU.
Was hoping my Tigers did a 5th Quarter & I could find it! 🐯💛🐅💜
🐅💜💛💙🐆
This was no battle.😆
If it was... SU would have made LSU look silly.
These two schools should have been playing one another each year.
I think this was just another Payday for another HBCU school.
@@ljsmixbox44 you clearly don’t know about LSU band 😂 honestly there may not be on HBCU band that can touch LSU musically. I love SU to my heart but being unbiased….if LSU wanted to play as loud as possible then might be the other way around
Honestly I thought it was an awesome 5th quarter and it really speaks to quality music and being versatile with song choice
@@_jaynola_ Thank you. LSU band is a very strong musical force. Always has been. People just assume that because its a PWI/PWC they are pushovers.
LSU is one of those PWI bands you can't sleep on. It's School of Music one of best in the country with very illustrious alumni in the entertainment industry. Great job both bands!
I'm a bit of a marching band geek - there are two styles on display here (this is why the bands sound different). LSU has a more controlled sound; Southern is more of a 'faster, higher, louder show-band style'. Both bands are at the top of their game.
Whats PWC, i thought it was PWI
LSU director of bands is a graduate of JSU
@@Blackice0318 predominately white college
@@Cash_Money_Dahj got ya, yeah i like PWI better
Man LSU sounds really good SU is on a whole different level this year moonlight is a whole different animal it's a blessing to see LSU and SU come together and represent for Louisiana
Why did it take this long? I think LSU never wanted to host SU,
@@ljsmixbox44 no su didn't want to play sec team to keep from getting players hurt
Lou go F urself. There will never be no togetherness. This is BR. It will always be divided.
@Barbara Lynn
Your uninformed. Lsu has a culture vulture imitating HBCU bands. Ever heard
"OFTEN IMITATED NEVER DUPLICATED" please spare me the propaganda your spewing. Only pwi I know that has a black band director is lsu. Do you really think that these pwi's want a band director that will change their culture? Do you really think that will be the norm. Your friend is a puppet just like Lsu's president. They are no more than a body for a photo op. No decision making authority none what so ever. They are there due to poor race relations at lsu as well as the city of BR. Not sure where u got ur data regarding the payment for hbcu bands. If you knew anything about SU, we were and will continue to be fine without the 💵 from a PWI. Not sure what HBCU band directors your referring to in regards to pay. I know SU, Jackson St, Grambling, Alcorn compensate the directors well. If lsu could take SU band and any other band and make it their own you probably be the 1st in line to give it to them.
@@lukelucas8112 cringe
LSU came to play and I loved it. Juke on another level as always. As a former Juke and BR native, this was a dream come true!
💜💛💙💛
💙💛💜💛
Not gonna compare the two bands because both bands execute completely different styles. I’m just going to appreciate the performance on both sides.
For real, that what I was trying to tell everyone around me at the game. You can't really compare both styles lmao
totally agree
But if you switch music sheets from both bands LSU wouldn’t still be able to keep up SU will sound more advance with their easy music sheet
As a former band member in Louisiana this is so dope. LSU was ready but the jukebox gives you chills
I will say one thing. LSU is the only PWI that could go against Southern. A lot of that has to do with the Louisiana Culture. Their musicianship kept them from being embarrassed. Their arrangements were way beyond schools like Ohio state and Michigan. There are a lot of independent arrangers who sell arrangements and LSU is nice. They can play with Southern Cal who is real nice BUT Southerns arrangements to me ,when it comes to R&B are the best in Marching Band and the Dolls stepped up the groove with the Routine tonite. I SEE A BROADWAY MUSICAL BASED ON THE DOLLS ONE DAY SOON. “Old Bandhead from the 70’s
And plus the band director for LSU march at Jackson state
Dude LSU can't mess with USC Michighan or Ohio State
Ohio state
LSU’s technicality was top tier and they really shaped their music like you would a concert band piece and didn’t just blast like most bands. But SU got heart and soul in their music, just makes the crowd feel it, and they are such a powerhouse.
Fair play to LSU wasn’t even expecting them to even be out for 5th quarter… but dang SU ain’t messing around this year 🔥
Caught me off guard ngl
I luv the fact that LSU stayed and battled.wasn’t expecting that.good job both bands ❤️👌🏾
@@Mynameismyname01 oh yes, they were ready.
stop it everyone knows SU stays around
I doubt LSU was surprised. Their band director is from JSU and knows all about how HBCU bands play after the game and probably told the kids they were staying after the game.
PERFECT STADIUM FOR SOUND!!!
Not really because SU was much lower to the ground. The higher you are.. the further the sound will travel especially in a big Stadium like LSU.
But last week you didn't see FSU low like Southern was. It was more of a balance sound for both bands.
For th LSUis game..you didn't see LSU band low to the ground as SU.
So that would make an imbalanced
Other than that, it was an easy day for the Jukebox.
LSU said we Baton Rouge too 😅 they sounded good & clean...SU, wheeewwww
This was way better than I thought man SU had LSU stadium ringing love it 🔥🔥🔥🔥💪💪💪💪💪
This was a fun battle. I love both of these bands and glad this battle finally happened. LSU always had a great band as do Southern. Way to represent Louisiana.
LSU studied. Southern didn’t need to. Both showed up! The Dancing Dolls are breathtakingly beautiful. LSU made a good choice on that last song.
SU was on point all day. I'm proud of LSU for hanging in all the way to the end of 5th quarter. Made the playing of "Let Us Break Bread" all the sweeter at the end. What a special day for the city of Baton Rouge.
Let us break bread gave me chills. It was sweet. Would’ve been funny if they played the Golden Girls theme “Thank you for being a friend” though instead since they’re PWI 😂 (I’m playing)
What was the second song southern played
LSU is awesome!!
SU is amazing!!
Top 2 bands in Louisiana…
It’s great to see 2 cultures come together and share their talents with one another.. let’s break bread together❤️✌🏾✊🏾
*IDGAF* WHAT any of y’all talmbout -
LSU took round 1🤷🏽♂️
Might be the ONLY round. . .but they put a tune on the Juke when the 5th opened, fam😅
Man I said the same thing I thought su played twice I wasn’t even looking at first
LSU band director was looking forward to this and LSU kids look like they had fun being apart of a fifth quarter battle
Not gonna lie… LSU HELD THEIR OWN!
Agree, but SU on a different level.
I was like “how they so damn loud for a PWI” then found out their director marched for JSU, explains it lmaaooooooo
@@diminuendo61We were loud before then too, that’s what happens when bands from da boot. We just all do it different down here 💜💛💙💛
No they did not… y’all being nice Lmfao enough
Best 5th so far this season starting off with 2 bands that sound great. Go Su
Ohh my damn SOUTHERN IS A FAWKING BEAST‼️And them TUBAS‼️‼️‼️I also appreciate that LSU band did a 5th Quarter with Southern the best band in HBCU vs the best band in PWI
Shocked that LSU stayed and did a 5th Qtr. performance, but definitely happy as well. Musicians are a different bread and truly respect one another craft and talent level, thus the respect both bands showed to one another of Saturday night. The State of Louisiana is definitely blessed to have great band from the High School ranks all the way to collegiate. Big Ups to SU and LSU!!!
I think their band director is from an HBCU so he'd know to be ready for 5th quarter
SU sounded amazing! LSU was ready for this battle lol. They sounded great with all them medleys !
Moonlight is on a different level 🔥 🔥 … put the arranger on contract because we need more of that vintage SU sound
Su would've sound better than that if Mr.Brian Simmons wouldn't left he was a master of writing music for them
I wish people stop acting like Brian Simmons was the main force behind SU's modern sound. He may be good but there are talented arrangers and directors still leading this program.
Tell us you don't know how The Human Jukebox is structured without telling you don't know how The Human Jukebox is structured. Smmfh
I said what I said Brian Simmons was a beast in writing music hands down
I’m an LSU Alum. Most of my family are Grambling and Southern alumni (grew up going to bayou classic & battle of the bands damn near every year, so I’m a little bias). LSU Band is fantastic. HUMAN JUKEBOX THOUGH! They perform each song like it’s their first and last time ehh-ver-ry time! And it’s been like that for DECADES
SU all the way, we on another level. I'm so glad this took place, Kudos to LSU, I was glad they stayed for the battle, much respect
Their director is a JSU grad
BRUH, LSU GOT YALL 😂😂😂😂
LSU band director is from Jackson St. I knew he was gonna take it personal. He should’ve snuck in some Jstate alumn to march if he really wanted to pull a sneak attack lol. Just happy to see both bands represent Louisiana
Both bands sound amazing and so glad they got to make history with the combined band halftime show, BR Proud. This was such a beautiful and peaceful event.
This is a great and historic battle. I love LSU's music selections. I've always liked both bands. Two totally different yet amazing music programs. The power, arrangements, clarity of Southern is on a whole other level this year. OMG!!!!
Man LSU caught me so off guard wit that first big blow..forgot that was LSU until the song continued lol but they sounded good..my jukebox was 🔥as always
I literally just said the same thing
SU had a mean groove! LSU was a work of beauty! Hats off to both.
The Dolls took the show no comparison!

Great look. Salute to LSU for stepping in the trench. Jukebox is on another level this year.
The true demonstration of being “baptized by fire!”
Love to see the HBCU culture spreading!
I really enjoyed this both bands sound clean and crisp! SU&LSU BR💙💛💜💛
In my opinion the volume difference between SU and LSU bands is like a nice pair of headphones 🎧 compared to a concert speaker at full tilt. UA-cam doesn't do justice of the volume and intensity they play with.
It wasn't close at all. Not in person it was a extremely wide difference in song selection, style, articulation, it just wasn't close.
I can only imagine... ⚜️💛💙
You have one band on the field and other up higher. One band plays with horn angles higher. From being there there was not much difference in sound.
LSU said they grabbed the seasoning tonight, not just salt and pepper. They used some Old Bay tonight lol.
😂
Nahh Tony’s or Zataran’s for sure 😂
Some Lawry’s or Zatarans lol

Luv this Battle...So nice to see a band not tryin to be like Southern. Most times the other band make me wanna skip and jus listen to SU, but LSU had a nice sound and some nice selections, but lawd...Jukebox didn't disappoint. You right I hate when bands try to be like southern. You can’t out teach the teacher. LSU was good
Both bands showed the best of both worlds

while I agree with you abt the slogan re. Often imitated but there wasnt any correlation b/w these bands to warrant that thought, however this exhibition was something we've never seen before. IT WASN'T A BATTLE. It was 2 bands with 2 different styles of play, accomplishing the same goal.... Entertainment and camaraderie. These band don't even compare. If you talking su vs another swac or meac school, yes, but this was something different. FYI... big doesn't make u better, discipline does. Loud doesn't make u better, discipline does. Musicality does. They both displayed perfection in their own way. BUT you win✌🏾🤷🏾♂️
@GSTR316
Your entitled to your opinion. U can't be an SU Alum...if u were u would know about discipline and musicality. But if your an lsu lover it's ok. Do u!!!!!🥃
LSU will be the lite version of a "SWAC" band of the SEC if they keep trending this way.. they gave me more than I was expecting
They aren’t.
That’s because their band director came from the SWAC.
Don't sleep on TSU Ocean
LSU has always played like this. This is only new to those who’ve consistently turned their noses up at them.
@@michaelpinell1861 I wouldn't say LSU has "always" played like this. They have been influenced by HBCU bands, particularly SU, for the last 15-20 years though. They were able to perform with SU because they have been exposed to those expectations for a couple of decades.
No winner or loser for me, but all love for the culture of music in Louisiana and it’s marching band history.
Two different styles, with one thing in common! Musical Greatness!
Kudos LSU
Good grief!! SU is starting this season in “Bayou Classic” form!! The balance they have already is no joke!! What the hell did the Tuba Section eat during the summer! They grew some serious muscles 💪🏽 🔥 the tubas sound angry as hell ✊🏽
As an LSU SOM Grad, have nothing but love and respect for the Golden Band. That said, mad props for the sound and spirirt of our brothers and sisters from Southern...fantastic! Thanks for sharing!
So Baton rough Had two good as bands 15 away from each other wow
As a band player who has marched with all styles of bands(Corp, DCI, SWAC), I must say that this is much impressive. LSU is my Alma mater and they're good. SU is good as well, I mean, you're NOT going to overpower them, that's for sure. But for what LSU does, it's great. I love the style of both bands. Keep this going for years to come. Band lovers need this mixture of styles.
They have so much respect for each other it’s amazing
Human Jukebox sounds so amazing, crystal clear and loud. Love it!
I'm a fan of both styles. SU has a ton more energy than LSU but their drum line is not nearly as tight. The song selections are much better than LSU for sure. LSU is A LOT more dynamic and has better tone in general. But that's mainly because SU is at full tilt 100% of the time which is more exciting. Love to see it.
I'm a college drummer from back in 81.....I agree, and that's why I gave the 1st round to LSU. There were sections in SU's 1st selection where I thought the drum line sounded confused and garbled....but still, the Jukebox is, and will always be my favorite band
Su never been known for their drumline that's their weak link
I'm proud of LSU....so nice to see them getting down!!!...I already knew SU's band was gonna kill it as well!... I'm so happy SU was able to introduce a pwi to the hbcu culture... It's still geaux tigers for me tho...💛💜
Well, technically LSU’s band director is from Jackson State, so I’m sure the students in the band are well aware. LSU band shocked me with their sound and song selection. Never really heard them in the stands.
I'm a PROUD JSU/SU Band and Cheer Mom and LSU was AMAZING! I truly enjoyed watching them perform. LSU is no stranger to the culture of the historically Black Band ..they've always been able to keep up. It's nice to see that they have lost their touch! Great Showmanship all the way around!💙💛💜💛
I'm a Louisiana native living in Las vegas, this battle was everything......wish I could have been there....Who Dat!!
As a World Famed alum, glad I came across this. Louisiana baby. Both bands sound great! Southern made LSU bring a couple snipers(trumpets) out later in the video. GSU will be down next year
LSU is cleaner than Grambling!!
There's isn't another area code (225) in America with two collegiate marching bands that are a match for these 2. Not even close!
Drop Another Coin 🪙 N2 That Jukebox, Baby!
This was better than Famu vs Southern battle. I wish they can have this every year. Southern is a Monster and LSU sound hella good and have a nice fully and powerful sound. But, they're from Louisiana so of course they sound good.

Can’t buy into that statement.
2 of the best of the world... I'm crying completely exited!! IS LIKE A DREAM !!!
After Southern 2nd song LSU was like man we got to play everything… but on another note This really puts it into perspective of how little value PWCs place on the band that stadium is completely empty for the 5th quarter

This band is fantastic! The precision, the choreography, the dancers, but most of all the sound. Magnificent!❤❤❤❤
I remember back in the day in the 90's there was a time where big white school bands didn't respect HBCU bands. They would say we were too loud and not precise on the field, but we ALWAYS owned halftime when we showed up in their stadiums and the crowd loved it. It's interesting to see them do joint performances, play signature songs in our library and even start to sound like us now. Even though we didn't seek respect, the culture has shown to get it anyway. Eargasms from both sides..this was a nice 5th quarter!
Truth!
Believe that the racists on the LSU sites were still disrespecting SU pregame!
Many LSU fans were saying that si nce this game was scheduled up until SU "tore a hole in their a** on national television last night!!

I prefer FSU "swag surf" tho 😂
I'm impressed with LSU. Southern STILL gets the "W" because they come with "soul" but LSU definitely had me entertained. That Let Us Break Bread Together...superb
Can’t really give one a W. As it was probably more for fun than a battle. They both just wanted to mix culture and show some BR Comradery. If this were an actual battle, SU would’ve dragged LSU. Like..terribly. They stuck to the culture while having fun and going easy on their cross town sister college
