Hey mate I've found the same thing with my 85L bushman you can either have cold drinks and frozen food or food that's just right and lukewarm beers etc I bought one of those kings 30L draws just for drinks so the upright is only for food and that works really well. Also go to bunnings and buy some foilboard and cut them to size to insulate the canopy walls I did roof side walls doors and also underneath the floor panels helps with heat getting in and makes the fridges run way better ❤
you need air flow.. i have roof vents, no dust, no water, then fit a decent 6'' fan at rear to draw air out.. or whatever you think.. the vents are oval, stik up 1.5''.[ 35mm]. have a ridge inside to flow around hole. about 280mm, x 150..ish..ebay. a sealed canopy can get to 100 degrees.. fridges need air flow..
Lovely ep and set ups guys, Put a 12volt computer fan in your fridge blowing on the freezer part it helps stop the freezer part freezing up and circulates the cool air better
and if you can duct any cool air with that fan to the fridge will help too, I used an old fan on my 3way fridge years ago and never had an issue with it.
the tow bar is the worst bit when 4wding but I need it to tow my soft floor camper. Went from a roof top tent to soft floor camp trailer was the best upgrade I made so much easier when camping to leave everything set up and come back and not have to set up a roof top tent and the 3am piss after drinking a shit load off beers is so much easier with the camp trailer. Biggest weight loss I've done is swapping out 2x130ah agm batteries to 1 120ah lipo4 battery 70kg off batteries down to about 15kg and another 70kgs gone from removing draws and using bags to pack recovery gear and light weight plastic boxes for food.
Hi guys another great episode. I noticed the problem with the king's fridge and it's a very simple answer to why it used so much power and it's even easier to fix the issue. ( It may even make another video for you ) anyway the fridge will run more when full as the temperature sensor is generally blocked as such. If you get a small 40mm fan and install it ( takes about 30 min ) the air is circulated through the fridge reaching the sensor and reducing the run time. Mine now averages around 17 ah per day
You say you have plenty of room on the drum for more rope / thicker rope, BUT remember the maths of winch drums. The closer the current pulling line is to the centre of the drum, the more power it has. Also the slower it moves. Every extra wrap OR thickness in rope diameter moves that position further out which reduces the pulling strength. Rule of thumb is 10%-15% loss for every wrap over the first layer, about 500kg on a 12,000lbs (~5,400kg) rated winch assuming 10% loss.
Another option I have found for running audio from your UHF I have done ran the aux port on the back of the UHF all the way to the radio just to play voice through the extra speakers I have in the car works a treat
Getting rid of the steel cable and roller fairlead was the best thing I ever did. I knew the winch cable would weigh a bit, but was surprised that the fairlead was over 5kg! All up lost over 15kg off the front of the Rodeo which was noticeable in how the car handled.
There's a fan for the kings and bushman's 85L that mounts inside to assist with temp regulating and the freezer frosting up. Plus adding venting to your canopy will help any fridge
Nice work, driving a 76 with a rear tow bar, I feel your pain. Unfortunately I need my tow hitch. Looking forward to some trips with the 80 and the patrol
Cool content and lots to enjoy here. Great to see you tackling and solving or moving forward on these projects. Think you may get rid of those rollers (and paint that winch motor) and useful updates for Liam. Cheers!!
Thanks mate, yeah a few comments on the rollers, might be worth getting a fairlead! The comments are great! Saves me from making the mistake and ruining brand new rope! Cheers !
In an ideal world, rollers would be fine. And if you only winch with the rope extending in a perfectly straight line, they will work just fine. The issue is the overlap between vertical and horizontal rollers isn't that big, so if you need to pull on weird angles or there's slack in the rope as you bring in tension and aren't paying attention, there are pockets you can pinch the rope into. Steel wire being not so flexible tends to poke straight out which is why it doesn't tend to have that issue.

Also removing the kitchen and cooking stuff as camp trailer has a kitchen makes it a lot better off-road. Biggest weight loss I've done is swapping out 2x130ah agm batteries to 1 120ah lipo4 battery 70kg off batteries down to about 15kg and another 100kg gone from removing draws and using bags to pack recovery gear and light weight plastic boxes for food and removing the kitchen and all cooking gear. Swapping your steel winch bullbar and brush guards to alloy winch bar and synthetic rope will lose another 100kg. Im now looking at removing 2 spare tyres from rear bar and only using on bigger 4wd or camping trips im thinking removing the tyre carriers and the tyres would be another 100kg and i can mount them to the camp trailer when needed.

Liam maybe it was the camera angle you were going for but it’s much easier to push down than pulling up when breaking the lugs on your wheel. Awesome video!

This doesn't matter, as it's the stuff inside the fridge that's already cold, so as soon as you close the door, the temperature will equalise quickly, unless you leave the door open for 5 minutes with a drop down type fridge, you lose more cold air because you are rooting around removing stuff trying to get to the stuff you want, which is always on the bottom.
@@-PORK-CHOP- You're delusional - yes it does matter. Opening the door for even a very short time will see all the cold air drop out. Not sure if anyone commented on this but you miss two major issues on putting a different diameter wheel on the rear and that’s having an LSD. If you have a significant diameter difference you’ll damage the clutch in the diff. Now if you have a diff lock well I wish you good luck on not twisting an axel shaft. Good vid as always guys
So, I am watching this 13hrs after it came out, when heading to bed, and it's number 25 in trending videos. Let's go boys, keep up the amazing work. Great video as usual, and lots of good tips as always. Keep it up
Exhaust looks good, but you will have issues with soot travelling up the back of the car and sticking to the tail gate, probably better to have a 45 pointing it more to the ground
I wish you'd gone deeper into the steel cable to Dyneema replacement. Where did you get your rope? Did you need any particular fitments? I'm itching to get rid of the steel on my old IronMan winch but any workshopw I approach always suggest just replacing the winch. I can't afford that and think I'd be able to do the job you did, after seeing this episode. So thanks
hi, another great video.first up tho, u really should paint the motor on your winch 😀.again you guys have good details of what and why you are doing what your doing, excellent narrative.keep up the good work and I will see you at the Brisbane 4x4 show.
I think Patrick needs to go for a tough tourer light weight setup. I was thinking fridge slider with a regular slider next to it and a single mattress on one side of the cab with more stuff he needs next to it. That way he can remove the rtt. Also instead of a serperste sub tank a bigger main tank is better as the weight is in the middle on the car as to it being in the back.
Upright fridges work better with airflow so you shouldn't pack them tight like you would a chest fridge. Cold air needs to drop from the top to the bottom. A small fan helps also.
A great fairlead option is a US company called Yankum Ropes. They have one called the groove fairlead that is a 100% metal-less system just the eye on the end of the rope. It's a pretty sweet set up.
To clarify that, the rope is metal-less. The fairlead is still made out of metal. And the rope uses a soft eye loop, the eye loop on the rope they installed has a metal piece in it, but that can be removed of course. The convenience of a metal hook can't be understated, I can grab a tree strap and my wireless remote, walk the line out and just snap the hook on. With the metal-free system, I have to also use a soft shackle which takes a little time to do. The big question is, is convenience more important than safety? You might think the answer is that safety is the MOST important thing. But humans tend to be lazy, so a somewhat safe option that gets used is better then a very safe option that is ignored for an even more dangerous but convenient option. That tow ball looks SO convenient for hooking a snatch strap too, especially if you have to remove the tow hitch and swap out a recovery hitch, hook up a soft shackle etc. Convenience is why people like Matt's Off-road Recovery use pintle hooks for snatch rope on their vehicles. It's rated higher and (most of the time) locks the rope in, but it's fast and easy to use. A good balance of safety and convenience.
I don't know why exactly but I like these types of episodes....especially if I actually learnt something...yes I knew about tire rotation but didn't think about the spare but it makes perfect sense...nothing like saving some money buying more time in this expensive game...

Good stuff lads but you probably need to research vehicle standards and local regulations before some of these vids. In my state that light bar isn't allowed there and shortening the exhaust inside the last cabin door is a no no.
Even with new roller fairlead it chewed my dyneema rope. Hawse fairlead no worries! Let us know how it went Like the GME radio, how much for the whole setup?

You boys need some impact sockets, dont wanna go ruining your bolts/nuts or chrome sockets while using the rattle gun
Only issue with the winch upgrade is that you've taken the plating off the rollers, they're unfortunately going to rusty now
Great stuff as always guys 👍🏻
Buy an extra spare , rotate on the same side spare to rear, rear to front , front to spare, gives 50 percent more miles
Great vid guys, Very well explained, Ide take the Hayman Reece of as well but I bloody need it to tow with 😒Keep em coming guys love ya work 👌
Thanks mate! Look they are handy to have, it would be great if it was incorporated into the bar or just a little higher, but it was just getting me caught up way too often! Cheers for the support!!
@@AussieArvos Oh 100% mate, Gets me caught up as well haha Ill tell ya, if I could Id trash mine haha. Looking forward in a catch up sometime in the year 👍👍
Please do think about a solar blanket. Just did four days at Eildon. Ran my fridge the whole time and didn’t have to start car once.
Would you do a follow up video in a year or two about the exhaust? They stick out from the body of a car for a reason so it'd be interesting to see what your rear bar looks like in terms of carbon / soot build up.
Otherwise, great video guys!
Yeah I ideally need a bit of a downwards bend in the end just to send it all to the ground (unfortunately we didn't have any 3inch pipe at the time) , I'll keep you updated! Cheers :)
@@AussieArvosdown?
Angle it out sideways so you can blow thick black soot over the washed and polished white Tesla stopped next you at the traffic lights.
Boys killin it once again! When we going for a 4by? 😁
Need to insulate the canopy the less exposed metal the better
Rouge industries fan for the fridge mate I own the same fridge and installed one of there fans and wired to cycle with the compressor made a huge difference. No affiliation to the company just a solid product.
Where did you run your wire through? Did you drill a hole or run through control panel/light? Any detail would be awesome!
@@aussieo684 you pull the display out and push the wire in through there and wire it the compressor while, it takes a awhile and a lot of patience but saves drilling a small hole which you can do too which is easy
@@robcarroll2403 legend mate, just having a look now and see where you mean. Have you noticed better power usage?
Your LED light is illegal, in Victoria you cannot have anything located outside your bull bar.
Ah, the good ol' 'chinese safety squint' when cutting the exhaust pipe 🤣👍
solar would be a bandaid fix for that kings fridge mate i’ve had a bushman’s for years and never skipped a beat definitely a good investment
We've got a diy mod in mine to hopefully cut the power draw in half! But yeah it definitely uses a bit of power at the moment!
I think the main limiting factor of the 80 series is the weight whilst touring. Probably needs to loose a few hundred kgs.
there's been more than a few people on the kings hacking facebook group saying those upright fridges are pretty much on all the time and flattening batteries
Good stuff lads but you probably need to research vehicle standards and local regulations before some of these vids.
In my state that light bar isn't allowed there and shortening the exhaust inside the last cabin door is a no no.
Nice winch paddy cant wait for more videos
Cheers Liam!
Even with new roller fairlead it chewed my dyneema rope.
Hawse fairlead no worries!
Let us know how it went
Like the GME radio, how much for the whole setup?
Thanks Tim, seen a few comments like this, might need to change it up ! Thanks
Please dont use the rollers with the synthetic rope 😅
Grab a cheap fairlead..it will save your rope
Didn't see a plamsa lock on the winch best mod for it
You pick the great UHF
Awesome video guys!
Thanks mate!
@@AussieArvos Ordered your guys sticker the other day so keen to put it on my 80!
Welcome back guys
Thanks Gary!
Great stuff, of course 👍👍👍
Thanks swish swish!!
cant do that with directionals, unless you pay to get your tyres changed on the rims
With your winch rope exposed to the sun like that it will fade really fast. Not sure how this affects strength long term
If you blur your eyes at around 11:18 it looks like the gq has a 94 inch lift
Curious to know if you've heard of or done anything about the 1HDT bottom end bearing issues on the 80s? Would love to see a video of mechanic dan swapping them over if they need doing - some will swap them every 100k. :D
Hi Beng! I've got a warn out big end bearing sitting on my desk at home! (From dan 😂) so it's definitely on my mind! That could be a great episode!!
It's hard too not knowing when it was last done! Had people say me they change them often, other who never had changed them and pulled them out and they were fine! But it wouldn't hurt!
Nice! Go the Patrol! Looks good ! 🏞🛻📹🤙😎
Could have cut exhaust on the car with 9 inch grinder and cutting wheel
When’s the 80 gonna get a raslarr bar. It would look so phat
I'd give that Hi Mount winch a birthday if I was you..
gotta be time for the 80 to get a lick of paint or what? 🤣😂
Hahaha it'll get me through a few more trip, but one day! It does deserve it hahaha !
That's going to Halp immensely.
