I'm Kurdish from northern Iraq but both of my surgeon parents did their medical studies and work experience rotations all over southern Iraq. Being an 80's baby, most of my childhood years in the 80's involved me visiting them in Baghdad, Samarra, Najaf, Karbala, Samawah and Baqubah. I've been lucky to live in the UK, Italy, Switzerland, France and Luxembourg, but I can never explain to you just how loving and welcoming the Arabs of southern Iraq are. My parents would be busy working in their clinics when I'd visit them and the locals who they were staying with would literally take care of me like I was their child. It now feels like it was a whole other time and place, such was the pure love, welcome and unadulterated care without expecting anything in return. I always felt so at home, and my dad still misses the years he spent in those communities. The Iran Iraq war is what changed everything. Division and suffering perpetrated and escalated through external meddling. We Kurds suffered a lot, but I'm still proud to call people all over Iraq my people.

@@الشمري-ح4ع nice, but why always bring out the religion? The shrine of imam ali alayhi salam is always a pleasure to see. The people and their hospitality. Its really nice to see you walking on these streets. Najafs best place to visit is rawan street. I do highly recommend visiting karbala. Its known to be heaven on earth. Good luck bro. If you were with any iraqi friend they wouldnt let you pay. We like to host our invitations. Am your follower boy , because of you my perception in IRAQ seems changed a lot for good. Really wanted to see and travel there too ... STay safe always Luke !
I’ve been watching you videos since you went to Lebanon and now I come across this and I’m genuinely so amazed at how you’re willing to learn and visit these places. As a shia muslim I appreciate seeing this through your videos.
During the Ashura months, when visiting Karbala and Najaf, it is a remarkable and unparalleled experience to witness the provision of free services to the public, including food and hospitality, for the entire duration of the holy commemoration of Imam Hussain's death. This extraordinary display of generosity is truly a unique and awe-inspiring phenomenon, unlike anything found elsewhere in the world.
Luke you are very kind person. I’m glad you are enjoying your trip in Iraq. As an Iraqi Iiving abroad I’m thankful to see my country through your channel!

Dude, although you are too young, but your vlogs are the best of the best. Direct reaction and authentic. You sometimes take risks just to reflect the reality of places you visit so your audience get to see it as real as it gets.
Take risks, is Iraq dangerous? I am Iraqi, and our country is safe. Do not be deceived by the American media, because America destroyed Iraq without humanity, brutally killed, and now the Americans say that Iraq is dangerous. It is funny. 😂
I'm Iraqi but enjoyed the video so much, I think it is because you have good intention and sweet soul, people like Azhar are there in your way , keep visiting Iraq your are most welcomed and hats up for Azhar we are so proud of you 🙏
Yesterday Nomac posted Hunza video and showed Lexus guest house and said "here my buddy Luke stayed" Luke Dement you are here everyday, Najaf has a very special place in all Muslims heart forever, Iraqi people deserve a salute for their hospitality even they have suffered very hard time.
Your passport is the most important document you have when you travel , never ever leave it with anyone as you can't go far without it and if lost can cause a huge range of problems including lost or delayed travel plans out of the country . I have experienced the same situation , a few times where the person behind the hotel reception counter wants to keep it when I arrived instead of returning it as soon as it is photo copied . They have told me that they want to look at my travel history which is none of their business , it is not safe leaving it with someone as it could disappear of the counter when the receptionist is called away from the counter if not locked up . Also if you leave your passport with the hotel and the stay has problems , you are stranded there until the passport is returned or found .
I agree, NEVER leave your passport with the hotel staff. The hotel makes photocopy, keeps the photocopy and returns the passport to the owner/hotel guest.
yes i travel before to jordn i give my passport to the hotel next day in morning i asked for my passport to leave to my flight back home they told me can't find it
Passports are “ISSUED” in the name of the person holding the document. This means by law (my understanding) in the case of Australia this Federal document is meant to be HELD by the official name issued it to. Ring your local embassy immediately if ever asked to do what Luke Damant was asked. Possibly language barrier or local Country law, but just check.
Welcome Luke in Iraq. I am so happy watching your beautiful videos. I am even more happy that there are young Iraqis like Azhar from Basra who probide you and othet tourists with assistance as much as they can. I hope you will visit us always, we are welcoming all people from all around countries .

@@rih. inshallah one day I will come this is my dream now💚
Dude, although you are too young, but your vlogs are the best of the best.
😍 Outstanding vlog. Thanks Luke for bringing the real Iraq to us. ❤️
