- Here's my walkthrough of the London Synth & Pedal show, along with my thoughts on why this show is important for bringing new people into the world of synths and modular.

I had loads of fun
As a first time visitor to this type of show I thought it was great. Being free it will attract more people and add to the good natured, vibey hum of the event. Soon as there’s a charge your average punter will and expect something in return for shelling out + travel. Great location - I’m sure they could double and fill the amount of rooms next year.
Fantastic show and location, and it clearly attracts a broad audience as its in London and free. "Headphones Only" is the best approach for me, and I won't be taking speakers to future shows. I can have 2 or 3 sets of gear running and people love it, and they asked tons of questions. Unfortunately LSPE it is too expensive as a manufacturer for me to attend, which is a shame. We certainly need to open the door to modular to many many more people, and its great to see how succesful this show was.
We had a pedalboard at the show. guitarguitar, our primo dealer in the UK, represented us.We heard it was fantastic! Next year we plan on attending. We've done the show here in the states. Paolo runs a great show. Time to hit the UK!!
Thanks for the kind words analog alien bros!
@@deliciousaudio Our pleasure. You did a very fine job of covering the show. Cheers!
Much better than last year, and esp on Sunday I went that wasn't even sold out!
Thanks for sharing this - I wasn't keen on going as it looked far too busy last year but I might try next year now. Good point about getting new people into this world. Our EMOM is free and I'd say over 80% of people that attend weren't into synths and electronic music before attending so it's good in that way but does cost us to run it...
A big, big thank you for this thorough review, Robin!
Thank you, Precious man.. The magic about you (for me) is everytime I spend on the chanel brings me back to my work, instantly. It is like you are a little with me, or like your workspace and mine are in the same place suddenly. Thank you again.
Very good. Thought-provoking stuff! I decided against going to the Expo as a manufacturer and then, later, as a visitor. Mainly because of the difficulty getting into London. (My motorbike is in bits at the moment). The price was high for makers and in such a chaotic environment it would be difficult to explain the concepts and complexities. It's a problem many makers face, I think, some things require a level of engagement that's tricky in a busy environment. Headphones with an intercom might be a way forward. :) SynthEast is so laid back and just a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
I don't think explaining things would be difficult. The in-the-headphones format allows for a rather quiet environment, much quieter than Superbooth.
On Sunday, there were performances of a kind in the form of demos, from the likes of Sequential, Arturia etc. @GamechangerAudio demoed their plasma module and Ilja put on a very solid performance if only for a few minutes as part of it. He had a full gig lined up in Soho the next day apparently.
Oh nice, I hadn't heard about that. Where was it done?
@@MoltenMusicTech On the balcony area outside, beside the canal. The workshop format was different to that on Saturday and was in the form of demos every 20 or 30 minutes or so, although there was a handful of people soldering away at the very back.
@@IrrationalRecreation Yeah those were our workshops, but it's true, many of them were in the format of performances simply because the reps were jamming while showcasing the products' features.
Presumably the best way to do the headphone only thing would be with a small podcasting mixer with multiple headphone outs (such as a Zoom LiveTrak L-8, Tascam Mixcast 4, or Zoom P8 Podtrak) and headset mic headphones. That way a demonstrator can talk with multiple people while all listening to the gear being demonstrated, each with their own headphone & mic volumes.
It's a possibility but would require more room than the space offers - and everyone would need mics if they wanted to ask a question. It turns it into a presentation rather than a conversation.
@@MoltenMusicTech Yes, each headset would have a mic. You can get decent sounding gaming headsets pretty cheaply.
Sure, but again, you have two modular manufacturers sharing a 6ft table because they are expensive, so there simply isn't the room. You could do it one-on-one, so it can work, i'm just saying it's not ideal.
@@MoltenMusicTech 3ft of table per manufacturer doesn't exactly seem ideal either.
Glorious video! I could watch you waffle on for hours lol.
You’re right of course, we need new blood. A friend commented on the lack of diversity present at Synthfest as it surprised them, for instance.
Did you get to spend any time with the PWM Mantis? If so thoughts? It has been a long time since I was this excited about a new synth.
Not since it was finished - i should hopefully get one to try soon
Hey robin! Just curious, what motorcycle do you ride?
It's an Enfield Interceptor 650
That's a beauty!
Lololol, 20 of us north of Tampa Bay, Florida went on a bike run on Saturday 😂... This is a GREAT IDEA! I'm a guitar teacher and a synth nerd now and we need something like this in Florida. Headphones are perfect... Bring your own or buy some at the door👊🏼🎹🎵💖
If I had one negative thing to say, it would be this.
While there was a good selection on show, it was really dissapointing that for some of the 'booths' there weren't people on hand dedicated to resetting synths, especially all the modular stuff. People with limited knowledge were clearly going up to units and plugging, unplugging, messing with knobs, until they sounded terrible. It felt like going to a shop rather than a showcase.
It was also so dark and dingy! Which made it difficult to see some of the writing on the synth plates.
The pedal expo next door was much better in this regard.
I think that's a difficulty with the busyness and the headphones
Didn't hear anything about this
It's coming back in 2025 on March 22-23.
Looks pretty and well-attended.
