The value per minute in this video is crazy. Thanks Tim!
I'm in the process of optimizing our SaaS onboarding flows now, and the concepts of Pre-Boarding, examples of ConvertKit & Ahrefs, as well as Motivation to Solve a Problem gave some great ideas we can try.

Great video tim! Love the concept of pre-boarding -- that is actually called Marketing, Brand Awareness, and Brand Affinity.
Path to value is to called - Activation: A series of tasks that a user does to cover the gap between Aha! to oh "my god I see the value". Checklist does activate 2x of users. That's what we promote at Userpilot since we offer "checklist widget".
    I'm your customer:
Since, Ahrefs does "pre-boarding well aka marketing. The conversion is high. However, things Ahrefd can do still:
    - Make page level onboarding: Bringing the attention to one button where users don't see it.
    - How to use -- How to use was really good. That's how we help our customers with page level onboarding.
    - I would love to get more emails from Ahrefs your support person shared the courses only. Many folks don't have time to watch so many videos, you should focus on "learning by doing".
    - I do agree aha moment, activation (time to value), and motivation solve to a problem is good enough.
BUT you can still personalize the onboarding. Most cases how Ahrefs work, it does not work for other folks.
    Hope this was useful.
I actually wrote down the best practices here: userpilot.com/blog/user-onboarding-best-practices
I also think that folks can segment their users better here: userpilot.com/blog/user-adoption-flywheel/
Lastly, I do think Ahrefs can do much more. But if it's working for them, and they don't wanna optimize the journey, and still be successful. Good for you (them).

Thanks for the question, Aazar. I agree that we "could do much more" in our onboarding. But I believe there's Pareto principle at work here and we already do 20% of the most effective onboarding tactics that account for 80% of our onboarding success. So I think adding more sophistication to our onboarding won't necessarily have a big impact on our business metrics. The purpose of this episode wasn't to educate people about all the different tactics that they can implement in their onboarding, but rather think about the fundamentals and decide what is the minimum amount of onboarding that would make them successful?

Start a blog about onboarding and do teardowns of how different softwares/apps do onboarding. As you think through their decisions and figure out why they do what they do (as well as what else they could be doing) you will accrue a good amount of knowledge to start charging money for consulting, or land a position in product marketing team to be in charge of onboarding.

@@ahrefspodcast thanks so much for the reply, Tim!
A few months ago I interviewed the CEO of x.ai and we talked exactly about how they redesigned their website to be part of a pre-onboarding (or prebording as you said).
      I think I'll start from there =)

Hey, Tim. I've a question. In your blog posts, you say it's important to have a goal that's beneficial for your business, Ahrefs in this case. And you say you only make content that that helps your business.
    So
    1) how does this SaaS Marketing Vlogs channel helps Ahrefs get more customers
    2) Even if it does help Ahrefs get exposure, why didn't you include it as a playlist in Ahrefs main Channel? Wouldn't it be easier to promote and grow one channel instead of two. Especially when the goal is same - get more customers
Also the viewers of your main channel are Marketers and viewers of this channel are Marketers as well.
    Hope you answer 'em. Cheers!

great questions, Kunal! The two channels serve different purpose. With our main channel we focus on SEO and we want to attract audience of people interested in SEO and educate them about the awesomeness of Ahrefs. But what about people who are interested in marketing in general, but not specifically SEO? This channel is my attempt to reach these people. Yes, it's harder to convert these kinds of people into users of Ahrefs, but with this channel we're not looking to make sales, we're looking to get some brand exposure and develop affinity for Ahrefs brand. Hope it makes sense :)
