As someone who regularly answers support requests related to onboarding for a site my team developed, I can see now that we need to go beyond just the initial sign-up phase. The work we've done to perfect that initial experience is great, but as you said, some people don't return for an entire year and they need some way to reorient themselves to the site and what it can do for them. I'm going to share this with my team!
