Philip IV the Fair, king of France from 1285 to 1314, is best known for his conflicts with the papacy and the dissolution of the Order of the Temple. He acceded to the throne after the death of his father, Philip III. Philip IV was nicknamed "the Fair One" because of his attractive appearance, but his reign was marked by harsh and authoritarian political decisions.
He extended royal authority in France and centralized the government. Philip IV was also involved in major conflicts with Pope Boniface VIII, culminating in the arrest and humiliation of the Pope during the Anagni Incident in 1303. These tensions led to the translation of the papacy in Avignon in 1309, beginning the period known as the "Babylonian captivity" of the papacy.
Another notable event in his reign was the dissolution of the Order of the Templars in 1307. Under accusations of various crimes, often seen as fabricated to seize their wealth, Philip orchestrated the arrest and torture of many Templars , including their Grand Master, Jacques de Molay.
Domestically, Philip also reformed the monetary and administrative system, but these reforms were often unpopular and led to tensions with the merchant and noble classes. He is also known for imposing heavy taxes on the clergy, which worsened his relations with the Church.
Philip IV died in 1314 and was succeeded by his sons who continued to reign during difficult times for the French monarchy. His reign laid the foundations of the modern state in France but is also seen as an example of the limits of royal authoritarianism.
