I bought it for 119 Euros. I was disappointed by the cheap feeling and look of the Mouthpiece. The Tone is OK. Could be more Airtight though. Slider feels good. I would recommend this as a good beginner Instrument.
Eugene Layton I own a Discovery 48. I find it is many times superior than the Chrometta series harmonicas. The case allows me to carry it in my cargo jeans. I own a Seydel Symphony and a Chromonica 270 but this one can be taken anywhere so it is the one that I most often practice on and play in my car, at the park, etc. I would recommend the Discovery 48 to any beginner or anyone looking for a good go-anywhere chromatic.
Can you flip the slide but leave the button on the same end, and have a “flat slide” harp in C# ? I wish there was a 10-hole blues harp with the notes in the customary blues harp configuration, but with a slide to the same configuration a semitone LOWER
I've been playing harmonica since I was 5 years old. The Discovery is the third chromatic I've ever bought, and I agree with your video. This harmonica is very impressive for the price. Very "hassle free" and comfortable to play. Other than lack of volume, I've had no problems whatsoever with my Discovery 48.
I purchased this Hohner Discovery as a fun knock-around as I didn't want to risk the CX12 at jams etc. I have not been disappointed. I'm surprised that people are having issues. However, Hohner stand by their warranty so there should be no issues with getting a working model.
Nice review Paul... I play and love my 270, (not the deluxe), but I am thinking about getting a Discovery 48... I have read and asked others players their opinion, and all most all, are very positive.
Thanks a lot for the review, Paul. I have very good experience with the smaller Hohner Rocket and plan to get myself a new Hohner Chromatic. In your opinion, does the Discovery48 play the same way as the 270 Deluxe? Sound seems identical though. I prefer metal over plastic mouthpieces too, but I like the optics of the Discovery so much better. Very I decided here… How does play and sound compare to the CX12 ?
Thank you so much for the successful demonstration you did,my respect, thank you so much, may god bless you, once more, thank you so much, hohner is my favorite when it comes to harmonicas, and chromonicas.
My Discovery is very leaky. I bought it as a travel/camping instrument after watching this review. I believe the reviewer has a good instrument, but the quality control of my instrument seems to be lacking. I got some improvement after putting Vaseline on the slide, but the instrument is still not fun to play. My next step will be to sand the front of the comb. That will probably solve the problem. My copy of this instrument is unacceptable without modification.
I bought this harmonica after watching this review. Mine has been nothing but problems. Cheap construction and very bad quality control. I'm sending mine back today and exchanging it for another model.
Cheap construction ? are you sure you didn't purchase a clone (from a Chinese website) ? These are made in Germany by Hohner themselves and Hohner are far from "Cheap Construction". If the harmonica you bought is faulty then Hohner will replace it.
No, I didn't purchase it from a Chinese 'knock off site'. I love Hohner harmonicas and have bought plenty of them, I have found them to be of robust, sturdy quality that play well 'out of the box'. I feel that the discovery 48 has either been made too cheaply, or the quality control had a day off.
It's certainly possible that you got a poor quality control version. I'm sure if you approach Hohner they will rectify the issue. I hope it works out for you.
nice that the button reverses sides for right handed players.....im a lefty so im lucky that harmonicas are made to be played in the left hand..............awesome right handed players were william clarke....carey bell and paul butterfield
Well, that's not a bad one to start with! Which harmonica you start with depends upon how serious you are, your price range, and preferences. I would check out the Suzuki SCX models. Best bang for the buck in my humble opinion!
Although my example of this instrument was a good one and I had no issues with it, I am not sure I want to keep this video up based on what I am seeing here. The video reviews I do are based on my own experiences with the instruments and I am in no way affiliated with the companies that manufacture them. I purchase everything I review and do the best I can to do a good and thorough overview of the instrument when I get one, but I care too much about the people who play them to have this going on. Sorry guys if this video influenced the purchase and your experience was anything other than positive. Take care, Paul
Hi Paul, it wasn't your fault that I got a bad one. I have had other Hohner's and they have been fine. I did liked the Discovery 48 and would have kept it if there weren't problems. Thanks for the video anyway.
Thanks Ashley, I do appreciate that. It's always a precarious position to be in reviewing these things. Harmonica is deeply personal when it comes to brand and the things we all like. I do my best. Thank you for the kind words brother.
That's the direction Hohner is going these days.. sad. When Seydel and Suzuki delivered their Symphony and Fabulous, Hohner discontinued their premium products... like Amadeus, Super 64x and Silver Concerto.. It used to be Hohner and everything else. Now Hohner is getting into Event Horizon territory on international market.. Stevie Wonder switched to "everything else" long ago.. good job Hohner....
I AM RESIDING IN GERMANY FOR THE PAST 20 YEAR'S.. WHY DIDN'T SOME OF YOU WHO PURCHASED THIS PARTICULAR PRODUCT DIDN'T GO FOR CHROMONICA SERIES? Chromonica 64 280 c or the other one's.. Wooden Comb version of Chromonicas.. 😁 😂 This particular Model has very bad reputation as I've noticed it on the Internet...Though I haven't tried it as yet.. So I can't judge....I play ▶ Hohner Meisterklasse Aluminium alloy Comb 7565 14 Hole's Chromatic & Chromonica 64 280 c 16 Hole's Chromatic.. I've tried Hohner Super 64 X and Suzuki 16 Hole's too.. But what suits my playability I pick that one...Don't get me wrong thinking I pick up on expensive Chromatic like Meisterklasse Aluminium alloy because I can afford.... My oldest Chromatic is 28 year's old Chinese Tower 🗼 Chromatic 24 Hole's & I STILL PLAY IT... Yeah ROCK AND RONS 10% OFF FOR THIS HOHNER DISCOVERY DAMN IT AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL AND HAVE A GREAT NIGHT DUDE.. 😂 I DON'T BELIEVE IN ANY GOD'S.. But I won't Misguide any Upcoming Musician's either..Money 💵 doesn't come from Heaven o.k.

I would recommend this as a good beginner Instrument.

I have this one and its performance is great...I have no any issues...

How is slider performance ? I mean is it slider noise free ?
Is it slider noise free ?
How many octaves does it span? Is it 3?

I agree. I also found Suzuki SCX series wonderful....

All the same Ashley, I am sorry you had that experience. Thanks much man.

My harmonica case has a marking of “Made in German”, and the harmonica has a marking of “Made in Germany”.
Awesome! I hope you like that harmonica!
@@Pleasum I returned it. Had a hard time drawing the third hole.
Bought a 270. It feels much better. Now I can blow or draw holes 1-4.
