It's weird because I find that I'm a mix of these two where I'll be polite and say yes, please, and thank you but if I don't like something I'll be direct about it. I do tend to be very sarcastic though when talking about an upsetting topic. So if someone was really mean to me I'll say something like "Weren't they just lovely? They could be a diplomat!"

Minnesota nice is passive aggressive and just plain dishonest sometimes, I feel.

    Not a good test…
You took a Minnesota person out of their comfort zone and tried to show people how they behave in environments where they are more likely to feel threatened and on guard…
Their behavior will be influenced by the surroundings…
    This test is inapplicable.

It can be, but not usually. We moved here from another state 20 years ago and love the general friendliness and kindness. But the Floyd riots weren't especially friendly.

@@dad1432 Protest is a Minneapolis point of pride ✨ We fight back against injustice. No one should expect anyone to be nice during a protest, that would defeat the point.

I don't know. I think a mix of Minnesota and New York would be really nice.

We went to a Twins v. Yankees spring training game at the Yankees stadium in Tampa. I caught a foul ball, and gave it to a young girl who was two rows behind me. The Yankee fans sitting around us LOST THEIR MINDS!! After the game as we were walking out of the stadium, there were some people making comments about “that’s the guy who gave that ball away”.

SO, real MN nice was born amongst the "rocks and cows". It was people living mostly secluded lives but being able to come together as a community to accomplish tasks. That meant, when you encountered one of your neighbors or even a stranger (not knowing if they might be a new neighbor) you would be cordial and friendly, at least on a surface level.
When this was translated into city living, the community aspect was quickly dropped and only the surface level cordiality and fake friendliness was retained. Maybe the cause for this modification was that a larger city has many micro communities within it so the overall community feel was lost. Maybe it's because when the government claims to give others a helping hand, local charity falls off (since the government will do it).
To experience REAL Minnesota Nice one needs that community connection and while all Minnesotans are from Minnesota, outstate and the cities have been told they are very different beasts. The cities know how superior they are to outstaters and how their progressive mindset is the ONLY way forward. Outstaters tend to be more conservative bigots, don't cha know. The only place you can find genuine Minnesota Nice is amongst the "Rocks and Cows". Everywhere else it is just that passive aggressive crap everyone else is talking about in the comments.
For anyone who can't read Minnesota sarcasm, the comment about the progressive cities and bigoted outstate can and should be reversed. Outstate is where you are much more likely to meet people that treat you like another person. Those "progressive" city folk will judge you by all sorts of criteria (race, religion, social status, education, etc) and treat you accordingly.
