  • We had an awesome opportunity to interview Freddy from SMG. They are the guys that built this incredible Hot Rod truck.
    What's even cooler is that you can build one yourself in your own garage since this is a full kit you can buy. The frame comes fully welded, so no welding skills are required and if you are going for a ratty look you don't need to spend more money on getting it painted.
    Thanks to Robert Wilson for being the guest interviewer for us!!

    WARNING - I feel these kind of "sales pitch" videos are misleading. The kits take 400 - 1000+ hours or 1 to 3 years, depending on your skill level and problems you run into. They can include engine, header, trany, rear suspend components not fitting right. You get to figure it out! You may get hep from the factory. You get to trim and fit the fiberglass components to showroom perfection. I have watched many videos on UA-cam to understand the issues others have experienced. A turnkey, showroom quality version can cost $85K+ .

      Like Freddy said in the video, "you can keep it simple or go over the top like this one". Your base kit for $20K will end up being $40K to $50K by the time you ad engine, trans, rear end, wheels, tires, body work, paint, etc. If you do what Freddy's shop did on this one, well then, the price will reflect that.

      But are you speaking from first hand experience with one? I will give you that your final price will depend on the caliber of components you end up wanting to run.
      I have viewed two sets of builds on UA-cam. One is a 33 coupe with 150+ and the other is a GTM with 70 videos. Both had many problems with the mechanical and fibeglass components. It looks like fun if I had a 1000 square foot garage, $10k in tools and 25 years of experience. I want to inject a little reality.

      No, not speaking from experience but we did just body swap a 49 Ford unto a 2008 BMW (using limited tools and volunteer help, while running a Real Estate business).
      Also worth noting is that we just happened to be at Barrett Jackson that day and loved the project so we shot a video with them. No other affiliation.

    If you had an engine trans and rear end you could build it for 40-50k? The kit is 20k, I don’t understand

    • @ManiacsGarage
      @ManiacsGarage  4 роки тому

      The kit for $20k does not include the engine, trans, rear end, wheels, tires, paint.
      So by the time you add all of that you can be at $40-$50k.
      The basic kit includes the chassis (with suspension & steering), the body and the glass. You can go to their site and see the options.

      @@ManiacsGarage I still dont understand. If the kit it $20k, and the average junkyard motor LS costs $500, and a brand new 700R4 is $1200, and $1500 in wheels and tires. A guy can paint this in a make shift paint booth for $1000....im only seeing an additional $5000-$8000 depending on how fancy the guy wants to get. Id say a guy could do a basic, clean build with a used motor for under $30k.

    • @ManiacsGarage
      @ManiacsGarage  4 роки тому +1

      @@highplainshollarhomestead3188 I guess if you can do all the labor, than maybe you can have it done for $30k. They were talking average prices, and if you ever built anything you know how much all the odds and ends (misc.) stuff adds up to.

    • @DKLONGHORN

      @@highplainshollarhomestead3188 If you go the route they did in this build and buy a built engine it can run upwards of 10k, built transmission probably over 4k, aftermarket rear ends can coat upwards of 3k, big procharger kits can run upwards of 8k. A good paint job upwards of 3k. Good wheels upwards of 2k. Those mods alone add 30k to the base price for a total of 50k, without including a custom interior. If you go the budget build route you can easily build it for around 30k.

      @@DKLONGHORN I'm the one doing mostly by myself for the experience and having a few friends help. Trying out paint for the first time interior comes with the car except seatbelts. Going automatic with paddle shifters and a big red Go Baby Go button for the nitrous. Thinking Flat baby blue with black stripes. What do y'all think?

    You need to learn how to let people speak. Stop interrupting and talking over them. Other than that it’s an interesting piece.

      I agree. Very aggravating when someone keeps trying to complete your sentences as if they know more than you. Somewhat of a "pissing contest" i suppose. Just trying to hear what the man who built it is saying. That is why we clicked on the video.

    So out of the crate is everything torqued to specifications or does everything need to be gone through? I'm really wanting one but being up in canada might be pricey as I know people in the automotive industry.

    Have respect, stay quiet and listen. We want to hear the builder speak without interjection in the form of some sort of odd competition, as if you know just as much or more than the builder. This interview turned into a sort of "pissing competition".
    You have two ears. Listen twice as much as you speak. After all, we came to listen to the builder and for you to ask simple questions and listen.
