As both a chronically ill person and a medical professional in America, I hate the healthcare system here.

It's all about money and big business in America. Those who "have" get excellent treatment. Most people, especially the poor, suffer.

Same here. Funny how working in healthcare chronic illnesses are used against you by those who know about illnesses and are well licensed. Year 23 in healthcare. I've been fired every single time I was sick for more than 3 days. Soon after my return 30-90 days, typically, I was let go illegally. If it were legal, they wouldn't have had to pay unemployment or a severance package. I've had both happen many times. I have Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis, Narcolepsy with Cataplexy, and right temporal lobe seizures. Typically, my illnesses are well under control. When I do get sick, it's usually because a medication I take suppresses my immune system. Then everything flares up.
That's only from my experience as a medical professional.
Patients most definitely don't get the care they deserve, regardless of how hard we fight for them. I hate it here.

You forgot to mention the responsibility of the husband. He was fully aware of her illness and prognosis. She was strongly discouraged from getting more children by her Drs, since she had such severe symptoms. He disregarded this, encouraged her to quit her medications, and decided to get her pregnant again - although they lived in an RV at the time.
He is goddamit more guilty than Andrea - he was the purposedly "sane" one of the two, but he completely and utterly let her down and more importantly let all those children down. He knew. He just did not bother one second.

My heart goes out to Andrea Yates in this case. I can't imagine how distressing it must have been to have come out of pychosis and realize what she'd done 💔😱 Tragic and entirely preventable if hadn't been for the way the health system is set up. Still could happen here though, ours isn't faultless .

I'm shocked by how undiscovered your channel is. I was introduced to your channel by your collaboration with Joshua Miles and I'm so glad that I was. I foresee a massive influx of subscribers to your channel as more people happen upon it. The UA-cam algorithm is falling short. I watch true crime content constantly and can't believe I'm just now finding your channel. You make interesting, well-informed, and high quality content!! :)

I read a book on this case and it is tragic. I was left more angry with the doctors/husband than with her. It also stated that when she improves enough to be lucid and aware of what she’s done she then deteriorates again because she can’t cope with what she’s done.

Such a very informative 2nd episode, where you explained thoroughly the ins and outs of this case and what went wrong re the Psychiatrist's evidence in the trial, thank you for that. Although it was a terrible, terrible crime Yates committed against of own children and what happened to those poor children just breaks my heart, but it is also clear that Yates was definitely not of sound mind and should have been getting treatment in a secure unit rather than going to prison in my humble opinion. I love learning things I didn't know and I love Pysch For Sore Minds video's. Keep up the great work, you are a natural, and have a great way about you.

Yates is an example of an American Health Insurance Company practicing medicine. The doctors have little control over the oversight of their patients until they hurt either themselves or another person, and they become the state's responsibility. Doctors can't just say I don't think she should be discharged. If your patient meets the insurance company's criteria for release, the patient must be released, or the patient becomes responsible for the entire hospital bill, about $20,000 per month. Most psychiatrists in the US are from overseas because American medical students avoid psychiatry. As a good friend told me, insurance companies have destroyed his career. He no longer works in a hospital, and all his patients are self-paying. He only deals with insurance companies when he has to justify the medications he has prescribed. You are warned when your insurance company has asked for a review because there is a possibility the insurance company will say you don't meet their criteria and will refuse to pay for your medications. It's a brutal and deadly system, and thousands, if not millions, of Andrea Yates, wander the streets of the US. (Standard of care is controlled by the insurance companies, not the doctors.)

The thing with this case is that it happened in America, there healthcare system is a disgrace. If she had lived in another country, i believe there would have been a different outcome. I lived there at the time this happened. I now reside in my home country, our healthcare system isn’t perfect but far exceeds America’s.
In saying that Andrea’s ex- husband has alot to answer for if you look more deeply into the case! He failed her at every turn.
I went to a baby and mum ward when I had my child. I have bipolar and didn’t cope very well in early motherhood.

Remembering June 2001, and the catastrophic flooding of tropical storm Allison, I can imagine the enormous stresses flooding poor Andrea's mind, perhaps not the least of which was a fear her children would also live with mental illness. I'm glad the prosecution's witness gave false testimony. Yes, I do know of another incompetent psychiatrist who proposed marriage to his patient and afterward she discovered he proposed marriage to another patient. I suppose the incompetent part was he forgot "hell hath no fury like a woman burned by a douche bag" and if fiance #1 hadn't reported him to the State Medical Board he'd still have his license. As a psychiatrist, I think you should try to do something about climate change because people are losing their homes over and over again and the mental suffering is not trivial.

This case was tried in Harris County Texas which is known for a high rate of death penalty cases and actually executing people convicted. In the first trial the death penalty was on the table. The fact that the jury only gave her life in prison was actually considered a "win" for her. The public outrage about this crime was insane. I'm sure that mindset informed the Jury's decision. I was actually surprised that the retrial actually resulted in not guilty by reason of insanity. Mostly because of Harris County's reputation.

    Dr. Das,
I have watched part 1 and 2 your analysis of Andrea Yates. I thought there were more videos about this horrendous case, however, I cannot find a part 3. Does it exist?
I enjoy your videos as they are educational and you have a great sense of humor. I saw you on another channel, The Disturbed Truth. I must admit that I am a bit jealous that Mr. Black has your number. I have many friends in England and call them when I can’t sleep (because they are awake and it’s not nice to call people in the middle of the night in Texas). I remember very clearly when the news broke about this case. It is frustrating that insurance companies can override the decisions of doctors. One way I’ve dealt with this is my contracting my insurance company and asking for the credentials of the person who denied to pay for whatever my doctor ordered. Most of the time, it is someone with no medical training and a high school education. Since our healthcare workers have been so overworked for the past 3 years, some nurses are now working for insurance companies. I still fight for my test or treatment because a nurse does not have the same qualifications and education as my neurologist who is also a psychiatrist.
Please let me know if there are more videos on Andrea Yates. I miscarried in the 2nd trimester and suffered severe PPD that has become PTSD due to the circumstances. I’ve noticed that watching people talk about the joy of holding their baby for the first time has become a trigger. For almost 20 years, I had convinced myself that it had happened to someone else (along with other traumatizing events that occurred around that time).
Thank you for taking the time to educate your future subjects (after you’ve taken over the world). May I suggest that you begin that process here in the US?
I would love for you to analyze the megalomaniac orange man who is currently under investigation in many states and federally. I did see a video where a psychiatrist and a psychoanalyst went through video and social media to see how many times he blatantly lied. Care to guess how many lies they found? (Hint: close to 50,000 times)
I always watch your videos until the end just to hear you say you love me, and I always respond, “I love you, too, Dr. D!” 💜

Hi Doc. 👋🏻👱🏻‍♀️. Tell me, what is going on in the catatonic brain? Is it a type of neurotransmitter storm so to speak , or what is going on in there? It is such an enigmatic condition to me. The waxy flexibility is such a strange symptom. It’s almost like a form of deep self-hypnosis.
I’d love to learn more about this odd and probably rare psychiatric condition.
P.S. is Catatonia a psychological condition or a physiological malfunction of the brain itself?

In my opinion she should have gotten the death penalty. She could have made many different decisions in order to prevent the murders. By refusing to take the medication she chose to have the delusions and to not become better. Of course her husband, the phychiatrists that treated her and all the family members that thought it would be a good idea to leave her alone with five small children are at fault, specially her husband who knew she was not well. He should have gotten life in prison, the phychiatrists in her care should have gotten prison time because they also are responsible that those children are dead now! That the husband was allowed to remarry and have another child is outrageous! It is a problem that nobody else was made responsible, but they all are gulty, not only Andrea Yates. Several people could and should have seen this comming. The problem is society at large still thinks all mothers are good and that they love their children and that they could never harm them, which is a very dangerous belief.

Yates held those terrified babies under water and murdered them. No sympathy from me, I feel for those poor children, who lost their lives in one of the worse ways possible, killed by their mummy. She chose to keep having babies, and she chose to murder them all. She's up there with Ted Bundy. All baby killers are monsters x
