  • Knitters and crocheters hate it when you get our crafts confused! It's easy for the untrained eye to get these two fiber crafts mixed up but here are some differences (and similarities!) that might help you out.

    I consider it a badge of honour that my husband and my 19 year old son both can tell the difference between crocheted and knit fabrics.🙂

    Some languages do not have separate terms for knit and crochet so they say : "knit with knitting needles" and "knit with a hook".

    I am happy to know that crochet cannot be done by machines 😍 also I didn’t know that knit has only two basic stitches ! Thanks a lot for sharing this. I prefer crochet but i love to learn knit 🧶

    My Mum, Grandma and Nannie are/were all great knitters whereas I’m the black sheep hooker of the family 😂 I tried so many times to learn to knit and just could not get the hang of it! I absolutely love crochet and really love teaching it too - the more people who can crochet the better!

    I don't have a preference. I love doing both. But I have to add crocheting gives you a wide variety of knots, whereas, knitting is limited to knit and purl knits! But both are amazing.

    I know it’s a weird reason to get into this, but, I’m chronically ill and can’t get out much. Because of my health issues, I don’t have a lot of excess cash. So I can’t donate to charities and organizations OR go somewhere and help with my time. It... it bothers me. I come from a family where we all do what we can. I’m tired of not being able to help people.
    I’m into crafts and for a time had a small jewelry business with some complicated beading patterns, so I think I could physically handle it. Especially if I do it in bursts and not for long periods at a time at first, build up a tolerance. Even having my head tilted differently for a while can cause a few days of headaches and neck pain, so I have to be careful. But I want to try. I know that socks are needed for the homeless, they always need more socks. And at women’s shelters, blankets and baby clothes. So in a way, I feel like what I want to make may impact which one I learn. I keep hearing that knitting is harder, but to me it seems like it makes more "sense," the way you transfer the stitch, so maybe I need to just go for it. I also wonder if being left handed will make it any different or harder to learn. 🤔
    Thank you for this video clarifying the differences. Since no one in my family does anything like this (the grandmother who did died six years ago and told me I had time to learn when I was older (despite me being 23 at the time, lol). I think she felt self-conscious, like it was an "old lady" craft. She was a rollerblading skydiving road tripping granny, broke her wrist ice skating, so the idea of doing "grandma things" bothered her. If she only knew the resurgence these crafts would have today!

    What did you mean by knitting only having 2 stitches? When I look online, I see almost as many as for crochet. Thanks!

    • @LionBrandYarn
      @LionBrandYarn  5 років тому +3

      Hi MC! Knitting uses combinations of two stitches (knit and purl) to create the different stitch patterns you see.

    I am a very new knitter and cotton yarn is proving to be a big challenge for me. Is it possible that cotton yarn is easier to crochet than to knit because of the hook vs the needle? I'm thinking I should try to learn to crochet. Any advice?

    • @DeanneShoyer
      @DeanneShoyer 4 роки тому +1

      I definitely feel crochet is easier than knitting and you can crochet with anything (rope, wire). However, I usually recommend to beginners I teach to avoid cotton and other plant based fibres at first. Wool and acrylic are better options for beginners because their elasticity make them so much easier to work with. I hope that helps 😃

    • @jenellpadilla1799
      @jenellpadilla1799 4 роки тому +1

      @@DeanneShoyer Thank you Deanne! I agree that the lack of stretchiness is
      an added challenge :-(. I have ordered some inexpensive acrylic yarn to use to teach myself enough crochet skills to crochet a dishcloth and then maybe I can use some of this darn cotton yarn I bought! 😆

    • @DeanneShoyer
      @DeanneShoyer 4 роки тому +1

      Je Nell Padilla I feel you! It’s so frustrating that dishcloths seem to be the default beginner project when it uses yarn that is not good at all for beginners 😆 If you’re interested I have a free pattern for beginners where you crochet a single crochet square and then turn it into a cute bunny ☺️
