This has helped me a great deal. I am going to make my request to be free of being exclusive. I dont' see audible promoting independent authors. thank you
Thank you! I was looking everywhere for it and couldn't find it. I remembered from the contract that I could opt out, but was frustrated when I couldn't find any literature on the subject. You made it easy. Thanks!
Perfect timing. In the process of narrating my book (eBook published on Amazon, but paperback is proving to be difficult because of formatting). So, I think I am just going to Apple and elsewhere to release the AudioBook.
Hi Sajan, Great plan. Definitely check out Findaway Voices. They can get you to Apple, Google Plus, and a lot of other audiobook retailers. Sorry to hear you are having issues with the print book formatting. The video I will release on Monday addresses book formatting and I'll be reviewing FormattedBooks.com. They're a really great service to help self-publishing authors get their manuscript done and available to upload right the first time: formattedbooks.com/?ref=31. Best of luck!
Good info! I had my first two self-narrated audiobooks on Audible / amazon exclusive, and asked they be removed from exclusive. With my third made it non exclusive. "Bleeder" is still showing up on Amazon, but the first two, Fade Out and Dead Air are no longer there. What's the fix for this? thanks!!
Hmm interesting the original two aren't showing at all? How long ago did you make the change from exclusive to non-exclusive? Have you reached out to ACX about your distribution to Amazon.com?
Glad you found this helpful! My biggest tip with audiobooks is to be patient. Recording, editing, listening back to each chapter can be really time consuming and it can feel like it is taking forever. But just take your time and know that it will benefit the end product. I leverage both ACX (non-exclusive) and Findaway Voices to get the maximum reach for my audiobooks. Best of luck with your audiobook.
@@1MKWilliams Thank you. according to the ACX site, the producer and the author must each email a copy of the agreement between them to end the exclusive arrangement. So, fingers crossed that it works that way.
Hello MK. I published my first book in Oct, my 40 and below readers all want the book to be audio. So I started doing some research and of course came looking in your videos. I wasn't disappointed. Thank you, great video. So what is the downside to doing an ACX exclusive with royalty sharing (other than lower royalty)? Is the royalty sharing in lieu of upfront payments to the narrator? What happens to the royalty sharing relationship, if you decide to move away from ACX exclusive after the 90 days or more? Thanks much in advance.
The royalty share is in lieu of a direct payment to the narrator so you cannot take the audiobooks out of ACX exclusively unless the narrator agrees (usually after a payment)
Is there a downside to going through ACX for exclusive to take advantage of their market of 45% of the audiobook audience and then after 90 days switch to non-exclusive and use Findaway Voices to get to their wide distribution? If I do that I have to download my files to FV? BTW I'm doing my own audiobook. Thanks.
I don't see an issue except that ACX can deny the request at 90 days Technically the contract is for 7 years, they dont have to let people out of it at 90 days but they have been.
If I haven't completed uploading the audio files of the audiobook to ACX, does that mean I haven't agreed to the contract? It says in the contract if you click "Agree and Continue" you've agreed to the contract. I don't know if I clicked anything before setting up the description and entering the chapter names. Does the "Agree and Continue" part come after you've uploaded all the audio files?
You would have agreed when setting up the title, prior to uploading. However if you aren't done and it hasn't been posted you may be able to switch to non exclusive/exclusive I'd suggest reaching out
I'm not sure as I've never made that request, however even for simple requests on acx you have to contact their support team so I'd suggest starting there. Best of luck!
Hello! No, Kindle Unlimited just applies to your eBook so only that format needs to be exclusive. For your Audiobook you can elect to be exclusive with ACX or publish it elsewhere so long as you have a non-exclusive contract. KU has no impact on ACX. Best of luck!
Hi Christian, For exclusivity it is by format. Kindle Select only requires eBook exclusivity and ACX exclusivity is only for the audiobook. You can have one format out wide and the others can be exclusive if you so choose. Best of luck! - MK
Hey, I'm about to make my audio books available on audible, but I want to keep them for free on my UA-cam channel. Would that still be considered non-exclusive?
Thanks for your video(s). Man, I may have messed up. I have always been trad published, but I (and my agent) were screwed in the last book's audion contract, so I self-published my new novel. I lucked into an amazing actor in LA who wants to produce the audiobook and we agreed to do a royalty share. I think I'm okay with not going wide, but I'm really bummed about being left out of libraries. Since I can not change the exclusivity (royalty share), is there nothing I can do to make it at least somewhat available for librarians?
You actually CAN change the royalty share. If BOTH parties agree then you can take the book non-exclusive. But usually to get the narrator to agree you will need to then pay them out for their time/ effort. So it is possible, but it may not be financially the best option right now. You can still get the eBook and print book to libraries since the ACX exclusivity would only apply to the audiobook. Best of luck!
@@1MKWilliams Many thanks! I've talked to the narrator, and we're trying to decide how to proceed--she also feels it's important for libraries to get the audiobook if they want it.
I have so much problems with amzon kdp and acx. Im pretty much done with them... their team behind the sences are kinda ridiculous to even try to comunicate with. And when i ask for help they always just sent a copy and paste responds like im talking to ai.

Did you actually do a video on removing a book from ACX when there is a royalty share arrangement?
Hi Sheila, I have not. I only have one royalty share deal and I have not requested to remove it from exclusively yet.
