Steven Wright is the absolute king of dry comedy and I concur with Conan when he talks about his voice. He has such an iconic voice you expect every sentence to end with a punch-line.
To hear Steven Wright laugh out loud is some of the most wholesome things I've ever witnessed. We're so used to his dry and nonchalant delivery, but also his absurd twists in story-telling, i feel it made us all believe that he was never surprised at anything 😂❤
@@christinadacruz420 I gave my son his record I Had A Pony a few years ago....bought new in the 80's. I don't watch much late night talk shows and I have not heard him laugh before. It is such an honest, deeply felt laugh that makes me feel like a kid.
He was comedy's secret weapon. When all your friends were riffing Eddie, Pryor and Carlin, you could whip out a "Wrightism" like; "I like to go skating....on the other side of the ice..", drop the mic and walk off.
I feel dumb to admit this but I've never heard of this guy. And now I'm seeing clips of his comedy and he's fantastic. Plus this interview was just great. Just like he shows how deadpan can be so funny and varied, this interview showed you don't have to construct a fake conversation or image to be entertaining. It's just a fascinating conversation so long as both people are honest, an have amazing experience.
The combination of Conan and Steven is together is comedy GOLD!!!! I worked in Cambridge in the late eighties at the Stride Rite Corp. and a coworker was a friend of Steven's. She turned me on to him....what a gift. I think the Bostonian perspective of these two drives their comedic connection to the stratosphere!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Just like when Norm went on the old shows, the best guests give zero shits. It's so great to hear Steven Wright just enjoying himself and riffing back and forth with Conan. This podcast is gold, and right up there with the Jack McBrayer and Kevin Nealon episodes.
Harland Williams is who I think made Conan laugh the hardest because he was beyond off the wall. Conan is the best late night host ever because he spent 100% of his time trying to make whatever the guest was doing, work. Plus he never went woke. I can't stand Colbert, Kimmel etc. They're just pandering idiots for a political ideology. Conan just wanted to make friends and make people laugh.
Like everyone else on here, many of us seeing Steven laugh for the first time was a real treat. Once again Conan is the master of late night comedy and of course comedy podcasts.
Steven Wright is a legend!!!! Great interview. Conan never disappoints. To me he is on the Mount Rushmore of late night hosts and this podcast platform has proven that he is one of the best comedians of all time.
This is the best interview of Steven I have ever seen! Have you ever heard the crew of the show laugh so much? This just show cases the chemistry between Conan and Steven. Absolutely brilliant.
Seeing Steven Wright laughing like this warms my heart. He's my favorite comedian. Hearing him for the first time changed my life. It just clicked... like nothing else had. It was like hearing The Beatles for the first time.
I have loved Steven Wright ever since I came across him in middle school. I would repeat his jokes to my friends and it ended up being a test of how smart they were. Those of us that got it really bonded. That being said, I've never seen Steven smile and laugh so much. It's simultaneously awesome and a little unsettling.
Conan is one word FUNNY. He also comes off like a nice guy. I’ve always been a fan of Steven Wright. My first time watching this. Think I’m gonna enjoy “Conan O’Brien needs a friend”.
2 of the greatest, to do it, absolutely killing, without the dirty shovels. It's like, watching different elements, supporting each other. Complimentary, but, obviously, in different gears. Steven Wright, is my favorite Living Stand Up, and Conan, nearly, put him into another category. Steven, finds himself, wherever he goes. Conan's delivered, the Funniest Moments, on Television, imho, and now, delivers the funniest moments on podcast; but at the same time, reveals a deeper side of himself, and his guests. "Tight Bamboo Drills", should be the name of Conan's Workout Video Series.
The way Connan can so effortlessly go on a comedy tangent off of what Wright says , make him laugh and so subtlety get back on track to the interview is what sets him apart from any podcast/interview platform.
Such a great episode. With regard to the bomb-blast that Mr Wright was in the 80s, I clearly remember seeing him on Carson in the 80s and being blown completely away. I'd never seen anything like it.

that voice! when i worked in record shops in the 90s it was all CDs, EXCEPT for 'i have a pony' by Steven Wright - it was only available on cassette & boy were we always running out of it. what a gem!
The real feather in his cap is how much Sona laughs here, she's heard top tier comedy for most of her career, so making her genuinely belly laugh is the proof in the pudding
I listened to this whole episode today and had to look this up - you can tell how much satisfaction Conan gets from making Stephen write laugh - I can really relate to making certain people laugh. given their persona it is just so rewarding sometimes and you can tell they both get a lot out of their friendship
Conan treats Steven like the comedy master he is but Conan's comeback about the bamboo, 'I finish their sentences for them', was truly the work of a king. To get there that quickly and smoothly was beautiful comedy. Definitely my favorite laugh in the segment.
