She is a great singer, not everyone should be Callas She was beyond normal, it is really shame to judge opolais according to her looks if she is good or not!! in our age acting on stage should have liberty and be more close to reality, and this performance is perfect according to that! it's not always about showing of vocal techniques, it's a full show!! music and theater.

I have a friend who confessed to me that she didn’t like the 120-lb. Netrebko like she does the more full-figured one of late. And my friend (a female) is someone who’d choose listening to bel canto over verismo any day. Given her preference for lighter voices I posited the notion, albeit very tongue-in-cheek, that she didn’t like the old Netrebko because she was “easy on the eyes” as they say. I interpreted the look she shot back as “you’re damned right but you’ll never hear me say it”. It makes me wonder if that same sentiment might be at play with some women not liking Opolais, as she’s “easy on the eyes”.

That is probably exactly what is keeping you from enjoying this singer's interpretation Ana, you don't care. As a professional opera singer myself I can assure you that Kristine is a fine singer and highly regarded by her peers in the business. Her singing is widely experienced as moving and that is the very definition of beauty, something that touches us. If you aren't moved by her singing, that's fine but I have the feeling that you are angry, frustrated and miserable with yourself and that is a pity. I cannot imagine how you could help others heal through music if music doesn't heal you. I truly hope that you fine peace with that.

Dear God in Heaven, this is just awful on every level. There are aspects of her voice I find interesting, but this aria is painfully out of her reach. The staging/directing is worthy of litigation! For years I have worried that opera is on its last breath...and this only supports my concern. This is my first intro to this artist, so I will need to find other videos, but this is just insulting to Verdi. Why, oh why, do directors have this constant need for their sopranos to stretch out on the floor or sofa? It’s ridiculous.

The end of the Aria was a little weird. Too sexy I guess. Alfredo was touching her breast, that wasn't necessary but I will blame the director for that. She is an amazing singer, definitely a coloratura voice. I know a lot of people don't like her colors but doesn't mean she doesn't have the capacity to sing this role.

Mme. OPOLAIS is a fine artist a singing actress of the highest accord. The stage director here is at fault. This is vulgar taste in operattic direction. Hope he never directs another opera. Sour Amgelica would end up with lesbian nuns frustrated they can't have what they want. Crappola direction. opolais was a good sport to accept this direction.

In my opinion Violetta is not a coloratura role. Is more like a lyric role, because coloratura and high notes are just in her first act. In the following two act the soprano needs more body and strength that most coloratura doesn't have. Coloraturas are they only one able to do the E flat but that wasn't even wrote in the score.

callas didn't have to strip down to her undies, or crawl on couch and floor to be violetta. ms. opolais is so into her 'acting' - mostly of the 'look at me, mom' school of acting and singing. poor violetta, indeed.

  • @hamrunfc1

This is an aria so famous that one cannot help comparisons. I've never before seen it staged like this. It must be very difficult to sing and act which includes strutting one's stuff, undoing corsets WHILE CONCENTRATING ON THE VOICE/NOTES. And singing with one's nose bare inches from the floor....... If nothing else, incredible concentration, make an obvious mistake that even a non-connoisseur would see; all this is terrible taxing. Kristine looks good (whatever happened to 'wait until the fat lady sings'?) and the production uses this, trying to push the boundaries to bring opera 'up to date'. Not many operation can get this treatment to advantage. In any case, 'La Traviata' is one of those operas that do not need gimmicks.

Too bad singing voice is emitted in engolamiento and musicality is highly questionable (calante). It is not the scenic problem of an alleged "vulgarity, Violetta in history undresses in the privacy of your room, there I could do what she wants, but intrude Alfredo in this body, as in the musical drama she hears in her beau voice imagination. It is your imagination. the "genius" of the stage direction are destroying the opera, not a lack of teachers or voices.

I deleted my previous comment because I got tired of getting brought back to this awful video of an awful rendition of one of my favorite arias. I usually like OperaNews' artist highlights but they missed the ball on this one. And for those calling the dissenters snobs... This performance is just BAD, especially the acting. If you like it, good for you; I, however, found it painful. Luckily, this is an old performance and she is a better artist than she was. Although there are far many other singers who are vastly superior.
Just because someone is famous does not mean they deserve to be; the music world is very political. And just because someone ISN'T famous doesn't mean they're not amazing. For example, all of THE best opera singers I've ever heard in my life were teachers in music universities. So I don't know, maybe I'm spoiled because I've been surrounded by such talent for all of my schooling and professional life.

Yes, she is married with the young conductor Andris Nelsons that helped her throughout her career; especially at the beginning when she was a disaster like here. She sings better now, even if there are many sopranos that are much, much better and they don;t have the chance to sing in such great theatres....but you know, life is not fair.....
