- Опубліковано 5 сер 2024
- This week on 'Has It Aged Well?' we're going back to the 90s to discuss the mega multi starrer 'Hum" directed by Mukul S. Anand. Joining Abbas and Urjita for the episode is stand up comic, corporate slave and Mumbai local train enthusiast Varun Nair. It's a polarising episode to say the least. Topics discussed include: The experience of Amitabh Bachchan, Rajnikanth and Govinda sharing the screen, the jumma chumma song and why it's problematic despite being a banger, the ever expanding plot of this film, the iconic frames and visual language, Danny's impactful villain and much more.

Abbas is the man !! A true cinephile who appreciates masala the way it should be. Luv his candor and comic quips. Usually, Urjita is bang on with her banter with Abbas but, unfortunately she will never be able to get or understand the filmi goosebumps one gets when you see Amitabh's Tiger shuffling his hair to get into beast mode😅 !!
This f**king movie rocked !!!!
The club scene with Capt Zattack, Rajni and Govinda is up for endless repeat views.
Correction though - Baasha is a remake of 'Hum'...the screenplay is just revised. In Baasha, the 1st half shows Tiger as the decent mellow family man and the 2nd half drops the hammer by showing his flashback !!
Bum chikki chikki bum baby !!!!
I don't normally like it when one host/guest overpowers the conversation, but glad Abbas dominated this episode. Hum is definitely 'vibes'. It's too long and has hundreds of issues, but it was still a class apart from other 90s movies from a general movie-watching perspective. The bomb defusion tactics in the climax, duplicate Kader Khan's eczema, the randomness of having tanks and helicopters at the docks.... ye sab toh deserves a separate discussion.
This series is awesome. Keep up the good work. Abbas and Urjita doing great job. Give them raise😂
52:55 Well, in the version i saw, Rajnikanth speaks in Kannada. I remember watching this movie as a kid, being a Bangalore boy that scene gave me huge goosebumps!!
I totally get Abbas' comment on vibes. This movie is pure nostalgia. Combines several genres/themes in a large canvas with a stellar cast. I wish they had shortened/ removed Govinda-Shilpa and duplicate Kader khan track. This movie would have been more engaging. Rajinikanth's Baashha improves upon it. Regardless, this is a great film :) Keeping it in early 90s, can you do Subhash Ghai's Saudagar?
I completely understand Abbas point. But urijita is more genz and doesn't understand star power and 80 and 90's bollywood. She tries to compare today's bollywood with old movies. For example what is ok today in a movie might not be ok in movies after 10 years.
This movie is so much nostalgia. This was the first movie i saw on vhs. And rewatched several times. It was stylish for it's time. Iconic.
Mukul S Anand died too early! He was just brilliant! I saw it in theatre when it was released and it was just amazing. You cannot get same vibes on small screen.
This podcast is the most hillarious one so far, all the hosts on fire.. keep it up all of you
At the onset, I want to congratulate to the whole team of “Has It Aged Well?” podcast especially the hosts, Abbas and Urjita who are knowledgeable and endearing. You guys are doing the great job of bringing back alive the old gems of Bollywood and being the 80s kid I truly wait for the new episodes.
But But But … I was pained by the treatment given to the movie “Hum”. I mean the plus points were not discussed at all though peppered at some places by only Abbas. Please give the due where it deserves and I can tell you from the reception it had at the opening (1991) and subsequent months was humongous…that was the time of single theatres and it was replete with crowds falling on one another to watch the movie...cost of the black ticket went up manifold..
So, my two cents would be to bring in some framework to your discussion to bring home a point… I mean 10 to chup chup ke and 4 to Hum by Urjita is really not passable…. So, please include a guest / reviewer from the past who was present at the time of release…. What was the review then… the analysis should be on entertainment quotient and cinematic prowess at that point in time…. People reception…collections done…filmfare / critics awards won…only then apple to apple comparison can be made ….. Take for example “Khuda Gawah” from the same director…if you ask me people were really going bonkers with the whole film set in Afghanistan and the sport of Buzkashi … you cannot measure that euphoria .. you have to be present at that point to experience it … that’s why when such a movie is quashed in today’s time, it hurts !!!
Keep up the good work … and bring more good films like N Chandra trilogy of hit films of Ankush, Tezaab & Pratighat ….. Adios for now!!!
Hum is an iconic film in another way. Rajinikanth remade Hum in Tamil with the name 'Bashaa' with some modifications in script & it became the most iconic Rajini film ever. Rohit Shetty's 'Dilwale' also had reflections of Hum & Bashaa. After Bashaa, many Southern films follow the template of Bashaa even today.
So, Hum is truly a trendsetter film which created a successful formula for mainstream commercial cinema.

Govinda had Swarg in 1990, which was a huge hit... and lets not forget his Street Dancer fame through Ilzaam... it wont be wrong to say Govinda was a star BY then... by 1992, after HUm and Shola aur Shabnam, Govinda was BIG
1 - Hum is a great example of a big scale cinema, a cinema which builds its own universe and takes the viewer on a journey into it. Mukul Anand was one of those directors who could create such an universe in his films. Even in a flop like Trimurti he manages to show us a different world. Subhash Ghai had that talent too. In current lot there are hardly any writers or directors who can imagine such a big scale universe.
2 - I was laughing when these guys were calling Govinda an upcoming actor in 1991. Govinda made his debut in 1986 and he gave many hits after that. Comparing him to Vicky Kaushal was hilarious as by 1991 Govinda was miles ahead as a star than what Kaushal is now. Current Kaushal stardom is not even 1/4th of Govinda stardom in 1991. So big loooool to the ignorance of you kids 😂
Hum, was the peak bollywood commercial cinema of 90s. Totally riding on star power, with amazing music, comedy, some well mounted action shots..Watching it the first time even as a 8 year old was just exhilirating.
Mukul Anand was a great visionary director. It's unfortunate that his last movie DUS (with Sanjay Dutt and Salman) could never get released. Otherwise we could have seen a Pathan styled action movie in 1997.
This movie was polished and made into tamil movie called Basha by Rajnikanth mid 90's
Mukul Anand was a very Stylish Filmmaker his framing of shots were too good. Do watch Agneepath which was again made by Mukul Anand inspired from Brian De Palma's Scarface 🤘🏻🎥🎬💯
Watched HUM after i saw it being the movie to be discussed on HIAW this week. Great episode, but they missed discussing how bhabhi is thrown in the lake, which short circuits the detonator and saves her from the Bomb. Science beeya**h
#Tiger #Bakhtawar #CaptZatakAttack for life 🔥🔥🔥
This is like ordering samosa and then saying mere ko aaloo pasand nahi aur fried maida healthy nahi hota hai..😂😂
Iconic stuff
Especially get goosebumps seeing Amitabh s slow motion head shaking scene before action and the music 🎶 for that was too good. Wonderful to always watch Amitabh Bachchan and rajnikant in one frame and danny is the classiest villain of all time. His screen presence is next level
Thanks abbas bhai and urjita. Great show
Keep doing more such shows 😊
57:50 Best Joke Ever !!!
The first half was more or less Ghulam, which in itself was a remake of On the Waterfront.
The one shot that hasn’t aged well is Bachchan going “Mutthii”
Hum is vibe… emotion.. nostalgia.. ❤ I am agreeing with all the points made by Abbas.. Mostly I am with Urjita but today I can’t support her views. You rocked today @abbas 💪🏻💪🏻
Abbas was unleashed in this episode😂
Guys the most Iconic scene was not spoken about...Amitabh and the bus driver. 😎
Exactly, the return of the king feeling! The pivotal scene making a tiger out of Shekhar. Rubbish jibberish they are talking.
Great episode!! Brought back amazing memories
Watched the movie after listening to this podcast. Overall ok movie, but Abbas is on point - the mass moments, cinematography and the dialogues were excellent. Doesn't deserve a 4 rating, but 8 maybe too high.
🎉🎉
Team Abbas👍💖
I was hearing this podcast on iTunes and just to leave the comment I switched to UA-cam.
Each time this woman speaks I skip because she probably is too young to make sense or just for rating she is making random comments.
Hum is cinema… all histrionics that’s it … period.
The pivotal scene where Shekhar removes his glasses and beats bus driver and transforms into old tiger ka baat he nahi kiya. Namoone log 🤦🏻♂️
50:03 arey Abbas😅
Do one podcast on "Lajja".
Waiting for agneepath, khuda gawah rangeela, daud dil se
Podcast is great but please bring genuine cinema aficinado and not wanna be standups. Mayank Shekhar episode was great for that reason
Totally agree. Need guests who are passionate about Cinema and can critique the movie keeping the context and the filmmaker's past filmography in mind. Especially when the guests are the ones suggesting the titles to discuss. Really liked the episodes with KV and Kullu. Can we bring them back?
You guys should do wake up Sid!
Jumbalika - Thakshak
sung by Alisha Chinoy !!!
Yes. Thank you!
Bakhtawar is NOT a great villain name! It's a popular Persian/Parsi name for girls meaning good fortune 🤦🏻♀️ I know at least 3 Parsi women named Bakhtawar!
Today Abbas's name was Ab bas!
First time I agree with Abbas
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Loved the show. Bring Varun Back for another movie. He is very funny and with great insights. only disagreement I have is with 'is dunia me do keede hote hai' dialogue. that was criticised for repetition but the same joke was performed by Rohan Desai which is considered the best comedy video by many comics.
Come on.... Hera Pheri 2000 should be on list now starring Sunil Shetty, Tabu, Paresh Rawal & Akshay Kumar in lead!
With Varun being so bothered about different accents for brothers.. AND Abbas trying to find some logic so that it can be justified... we have reached peak woke discourse about vintage Bollywood that never pretended to take itself seriously :D :D
Interesting how one of the panelists was constantly squirming about objectification of women in the film and at one point they say "Oh this actress looked older in the film.. THAT'S BAD"... True feminist and cinephile I must say..
Priyadarshan made those movies better and funnier
Baasha is hum remade.
If you judge this film on woke scale… it is not for you!!! It is one of the iconic films for its time. Mukul Anand made some great movies, Agneepath, Hum, Khuda Gawah… actual big scale cinema with good story!!!
Who will be the voice of reason? Abbas has changed 😂
Except Abbas, both were just mocking Hum throughout by cheap jokes. Hum is a classic and Mukul Anand was a stylish director
Also Naina from Ye jawani has Jumma Chumma song byheart @Urjita
LVOE this episode...U n A...Best Duo...
"The video wasnt great".
4 for hum is nonsense
Hindi mt bol English ke sath bolna h to English bol nhi to hindi mt bol gulami ke pillo
Hum Is still better than Jawaan or Pathan type of chapri movies
Talking shit about hum with a neo feminist.losing all the plots. Way to go
Abbas is really bit irritating.
English mein bolne mein time lag raha hai to Hindi mein bol do bhaai. Hindi film industry ke baare mein baat kar rahe ho to audience Hindi jaanti hai. Show off karne ki zarurat nahin hai.
I have started with the sarfarosh episode and jumped into this and now I am feeling ke unsubscribe he kar do. Itna irritating lag raha hai.
Mumbai mein main bhi raha hoon but itna farzi mein English mein koi bhi baat nahi karta.
Movie ke synopsis pe he close kar dia Maine aisa irritating episode laga.
I would love to listen teen taal as a longer podcast. Atleast they don’t interrupt the guest or the other member.
Highly disagree with Urjita & Varun
This movie is a cult classic ❤
Varun should not bad mouth his day time job..Its his bread and butter.
Should share snippet with CEO/HR…
Disappointment 😢
