Flying these back country airports in Idaho are my favorite areas to fly. Departing from these airstrips I've flown to McCall Idaho, Boise Idaho, Lolo Montana, Lewiston Idaho, Grangeville, Idaho, Hellsgate, Idaho, Coeur D Alene, Idaho, Red Lodge, Montana, etc. Also, I enjoy following the rivers flying just above the water line. My father and his business partner bought a cabin at Pistol Creek Ranch in 1958. My father passed in 1999 but we continue to be part owners in a cabin. Over the years father took our Bonanza into almost every strip back there. Never turbocharged, and an IO-470 under the hood we did fine. He was a commercial pilot who retired in 1989 with +36,000 hours starting in the DC3 and West Coast Airlines. He flew Charters for the Idaho State legislators ferrying congress and senators from all over the state to Boise and back. He would go on to fly most of the Beechcraft line, plus F27's, DC9's. And retired off the B757. He had a few hard and fast rules. -Always land exactly in the center of the runway. Calculate and check your gross weight compare the temperature and most important, Air Density! Always know what your weight and what your true altitude is after adjusting density altitude. KNOW what your true horse power is going to be and what your ground roll will be and are you within the flight envelope. ONLY FLY EARLY MORNING, LATE EVENING IN THE MOUNTAINS during the summer months. Lastly don't get lulled into a false sense of security by having a turbocharged airplane. If the density altitude is 8000-10,000ft it doesn't matter how much horsepower you're making if the prop has nothing to bite, and the wings can't generate any lift Growing up and Spending my summers at Pistol Creek I've watched, or seen, or knew, ridden horses up to retrieve radios or bodies on over a dozen wrecks. My friends and I take turns trying to land on a challenging flat precipice that is 2.75 miles north of the False Pass, Alaska airport (PAKF) in the Aleutians Island chain. -163.418867°, 54.887791° Cheers!! It's a tough little spot, decieving really, especially with the altitude thrown in. Caught the lip at the touch down, but i was low energy enough to be alright really... good job I had big baloon tires for that one!

Hello I did enjoy your Video. I would have crashed on that ridge, lol. I have been loving your learning too fly videos, The latest one is by far my favorite so far. I watch a lot of videos and streamers, no one not one, that I have seen prior to your video explained about the DNB VOR page in the MSFS 2020 map. I have always guessed that there was such a thing but well, maybe I was too lazy to find it? Everyone goes on about getting subscriptions that cost a $ 100.00 Bucks a year, for me that is "insane in the membrane". Thank you so much for sharing your time and knowledge with me\ us.

Have you heard yet of the workaround for the nose swing? It seems to be making rounds on the forums, I've just found out recently. TLDR the nose swing occurs when tailwheel loses grip - so if you maintain enough back pressure to keep it from fully lifting all the way to rotation speed, plane will stay straight. Yes, I know this probably contradicts every single piece of info about taildragger takeoff IRL...
It does completely lol. and weirdly its only certian tail draggers that do it... which is odd, as some powerful ones behave normally, some low power swing like mad heh
@@AvAngel True. Stearman is mostly fine, Waco is terrible, C170 is generally wobbly in all conditions, C172 bush kit taildragger is pretty bad as well. Some devs have managed to mitigate it but I have no idea what the secret juice is. Anyway if you're willing to fight your real life flying habits, it does work in fact, at least until Asobo hopefully fixes it as they promised (instead of say making it weirder in a new and unexpected way)

Instead the best way here is to hold stick aft just far enough to keep tailwheel on the ground. If you feel you start slipping add a little nose up. Slowly return stick towards center when you feel you start getting light on wheels, to avoid stall on liftoff. Talk about messing with real world habits, just like the old guys say ;)

Don’t hold the brakes and apply full throttle on bush strips. That’s fine for an asphalt runway, but is a big no-no for bush strips. Doesn’t matter in a sim, but it’s a bad practice.
Wich airport is the first one? Link? However I prefer aircraft that have to do with reality. A C172 with such huge wheels I have never seen. The Gotgravel and Co tend to exaggerate too much. There is not a C172 with such undercarriage and wheel in real life. Your landings are terrible however.... Nose up on landing and the stall horn that sound so much a that height ...... you have to do a steeper approach, then full flaps on final and then "Flare" at low level, the aicraft stall and you land. In real life you would have killed yourself but thanks to Good you are on MSFS....... It is typical of Simpilots to fly too low on final, in fact they don't see the runway.... only in the very last part of the final with a taildragger you don't see the strip, otherwise you kill yourselt. 'Riding the horn down' is just one of many techniques RL Bush Pilots utilize. Knowing and training in your airplane's stall/STOL characteristics makes this a relatively safe maneuver. The 'Old School' Cessnas such as the 170-185 series are amongst the most enjoyable and cost effective planes to modify for Bush Flying. Firstly, there are tail dragger 172s... they exist, fitting bush tires isn't out of the possibility even slightly. As for the approaches, my landings were safe, the drag curve approach I use for short field is a prime example of knowing the aircraft's stall and performance characteristics... The approach you describe would produce far too much energy, wouldn't dissipate and would result in extremely floaty landings, you seem to be looking at this from a GA fly the speed approach, As for the stall horn, you do realise it doesn't mean you're stalling right? just close. Properly managed, a slight nose up attitude with a wing just aft of level with flaps creates an extremely low energy approach and is used routinely. Please do some research before coming out and insulting me and then trying to patronise me with incorrect information.

Wait, what? If you put in full flaps on final, your aircraft will balloon like hell. If you are on a short field, you will float too far to make a safe landing. Coming in low, and with little energy on a short field is a *good* thing, as your landing roll becomes a lot shorter. The higher you are on approach, the more energy you have to lose, and coming in high is only really preferable when there is an obstacle in front of the runway. Please don't comment like an expert, when you don't even have the knowledge of a novice.

Lower Loon is a nice challenge. I love the back country flying!

I recommend turning on tailwheel lock with Shift + G on takeoffs and landings - basically eliminates that yaw on the takeoff roll :>
Nope, the yaw only ever happens when the tail is up, so the lock wouldn’t do a thing

I will try it, but it feels wrong lol. The Husky is thankfully easy beacuse im barely on my mains before i lift!

Pistol Creek is the name, and its identifier is ID49, it may be a newly added one, so the scenery in the description will do it :)
