    At 66 and with no local bowling centers at all, I rarely bowl these days.. when I do, I still have my vintage Brunswick LT-51 (circa 1978) and LInds custom bowling shoes (same timeframe) and that's the only equipoment I have. I doubt using more modern stuff would help me much at this point. Love still having this ancient stuff.

    I remember when this ball first came out. The major league I was bowling in at the time had a gal who normally threw only a small hook suddenly was ripping the rack like crazy. She was using the Excalibur where most of the rest of us were still using standard urethane.

    I had one of these. I worked in a pro shop and we got one in 15#, and none of the other macho guys were willing to throw it. It went sideways compared to my blue hammer, which was one of the hookingest ball on the market at the time.

    I still have this ball, along with the Ebonite Turbo/X in a bag, both at 16lbs. I was bowling Collegiates when this ball came out, and like others, was still throwing urethane at the time. After that tournament, I immediately went to my PSO, and got both of these drilled. Hardest hooking balls at the time, when kids were asking how it was hooking more than everything they had at their dullest. For this ball to still hit as hard as it is while others that are softer crack says a lot about the durability of this ball, let alone possible usability.

    For those who might not know the history of this ball, look up the 1992 PBA AC-Delco Classic. It’s the first telecast where this ball was thrown. Bo Burton the commentator could not even wrap his mind around how sharp it was breaking for the time. It really is fascinating to go back and watch.

    I never had one of those specific balls back in the day, but in defense of it: It's old. I guarantee you it's not as good as it was when it was new. Nowhere near as much friction. If you could somehow time portal one from 91 to now and drill it brand new, I bet it'd stack up very well.
    I remember the first reactive I had, a Piranha C, Green. I hadn't bowled for about 4 years. Started back, had all urethane and plastic, and was scratching my head over why I couldn't hook the ball much. I usually threw a pretty strong ball. Was using a Blue Hammer, (hookingest urethane I had ever seen) that was drilled with thumb and negative side and sanded, to hook early, and trying to tear the cover off of it and it just would barely move. Pro shop guy who had known me since I was a kid watched and said "I'll drill you one up, it's not you it's the ball". I was skeptical. Then I went in when he was about done and say him drilling a shiny pearl ball and was REALLY skeptical.
    Went and through it, slow because I just KNEW it wasn't going to hook. Hooked off the lane. I was a believer then.

  • @CheapButNotEasy
    @CheapButNotEasy Місяць тому +2

    Those balls amplified the prevailing lower rev higher axis rotation releases of that time. They were competing with 1st generation urethane, and were beasts by comparison

    Owned this ball back when it first came out. Taking it to the long-gone Riverdale Lanes (where Mike Lichstein cut his teeth), would go ~54' straight up 4 before making a left turn at Albuquerque and annihilating the rack.

    When the Xcalibur came out, one of its biggest flaws was it "ran out" of "Reactive" reaction. They eventually brought out a Cleaning Product used in 2 Stages to Clean, and then "re-activate" the Resin.... It was quickly overtaken by Balls that needed less maintenance....

    The "first" X-Calibers had a distinct purple haze to them. Later, after Columbia took it over and it has the look of the ball you are throwing and was less reactive. The original ones were devastating and snapped hard. XCalibur also made a softer blue shell which most people dont even know existed. This cover was literally so soft that you could rub your fingers off the cover like it was gumball texture. My friend bought the blue one when we both got purples. He shot a massive 800+ series the first time he used it in a tournament. I dont know whatever happened to the blue one, as that was the only one I ever saw one.

    A never ending battle of get the ball that hooks the most then complain that there isn't enough oil on the lanes. This X Calibur ball was GREAT back in the day. It became a dinosaur as centers had to keep putting more oil on the lanes for people who want their balls to hook more and more.

    • @mpup54
      @mpup54 Місяць тому +1

      I agree. I think the sport dumping more oil and getting rid of wood lanes totally killed the feel of the sport I once knew. I bowled almost my entire life on wood, so I didnt run into synthetic and oil dumping as much as most people do. When wood lanes were flooded with oil, they were slick as can be though.

      remember Bo's reaction to the one strike that "looked like it hit a brick down there." There was another telecast right next to it where some unknown heavy roller lead the PBA event and won. Those two titles put XCalibur on the map for good. I wish I had the original purple and blue that they made before Columbia took them over.

    • @mpup54
      @mpup54 Місяць тому +1

      it used to be all about the backends. I dont know if that still applies. If the center hasnt dried them for awhile, like leagues have bowled on them, the carry down used to be the key reason. I once bowled on lanes where the entire lane got oiled on accident by the machine, thru the backends and there was no hook at all. Even pointing from the corner to the pocket on a straight line was not enough to carry.

Anyone with a good suggestion how one might mitigate this issue to get through a tournament? .. I have taken some anti-inflammatory medication and considering using one of my bowling wrist braces (doesn't restrict release), but aside from that perhaps someone has had to work through the same thing and may have a good recommendation (other than, don't use it 😁)?
