After the battle it was offered (once the Union took the fort after the Confederates abandoned it) to repatriate Shaw’s remains to Massachusetts but his father said “We would not have his body removed from where it lies surrounded by his brave and devoted soldiers....We can imagine no holier place than that in which he lies, among his brave and devoted followers, nor wish for him better company - what a body-guard he has!” That’s some real shit.

@@rxtsec1 Its crazy how that entire family seemingly had such strong moral convictions. I wouldn't even blame them for wanting their sons remains back where they could bury him someplace near to home, but just making that statement and then refusing the repatriation is some insane dedication to what their son believed in, and reflects on what they believe in as well.

The person Morgan Freeman's character was based on survived and won the Congressional Medal of Honor. Till this day he's still hold the US military record for men killed in hand to hand combat in a single engagement,60.

did you know that the real lone ranger was man named Bass Reeves? Look him up. He's been a man you can call my hero since I was a child. Of course it wasnt' until i was teen that I realized he was a black man. Look up his deeds. Theres even a series about him and his adventures on the Paramount Channel.

One thing I always appreciated about this movie is that the Sergeant Major in charge of training them is showing them the utmost respect by being hard on the men and holding them to the standard. For historical context, the story is roughly two years into the war, and it's by far the bloodiest conflict in American history. He knows what they'll be facing if they go into combat, and by seeing to it that they'll be ready and holding them to the same standard that he would to any other soldier speaks tremendous volumes to his character.

Pretty sure the bloodiest single battle to this day is at Gettysburg PA. Pretty sure wilderness was a close second.
@@freespirit9981 Gettysburg was three days long. Antietam lasted one day, thus was the bloodiest single day.. The OP is saying the CW was the bloodiest conflict, not as a single battle. Try looking it up.
the sgt molded them into the fighting force they became, he was proud of them and it looks like Tripp got it as he looked over. very cool scene. he did the same shit to the white troops. lol.
Just like any Drill Sargent today, those guys mold the soldiers to be ready for battle. Most of them are not the mean person outside of the job.
I always love that the angry assed soldier with the mustache who starts stuff with Denzel but then later shouts "GIVE EM HELL, 54!" was in fact played by the screenwriter, Kevin Jarre.
Same guy who gave us Tombstone.
That's my favorite scene in the whole movie.
21:22 Denzel shedding that single tear while getting whipped was what gained him the Best Supporting Actor Oscar the following year. The depth and intensity of emotion in this scene is absolutely incredible and never ceases to impress.

In the vast majority of cases where your sentiment is put forward, no one is actually "acting" that way. And even the most charitable interpretation possible of your first statement can't make it less absurd..."no one is..." More to the point about the movie is that Andre Braugher, who played Thomas so well, died this past December. Nothing against the brilliant Carl Weathers, but he wasn't in "Glory".
I'm a 34 year old white man who grew up in a predominantly black school district arround Chicago and I must say there's a lot of people who need to hear what you said in the beginning of this....I'm tired of seeing all the hate.

It's truly insane the lengths some people will go to minimize Black slavery in America. Saying BUT BUT BUT OTHER PEOPLE WERE SLAVES TOO doesn't change the fact that America had some of the most uniquely brutal chattel slavery in human history.
I learned everything about slavery starting in fifth grade and sixth and it inspired me to get involved more in American history
and I still study it a few decades later it’s amazing America is still forging ahead,slavery is something I can’t imagine kind of like Auschwitz’s but racism today is just total ignorance

nice touch at the end you see Thomas disarming and taking down a soldier with a bayonet the same way the drill instructor so harshly and violently demonstrated on him earlier in the movie.
And in their first battle, Pvt Jupiter's learning to reload fast under pressure saved his life, when that on Confederate soldier was charging him.

Growing up in a violent home, escapism was more important to me than I can explain. Books and comics first, then later films made me fall in love with the wonderful art of storytelling. This film, Glory, was one of the four movies that had the biggest impact on me, the other three being The Color Purple, The Elephant Man, and The Right Stuff. Glad you guys got around to this one.

The man at the beginning that you asked why you know him was Andre Braugher. He just passed away in December. He was in the movie Primal Fear with Richard Gere and Ed Norton and on the tv show Brooklyn Nine-nine. Great actor.

Frank Pembleton in Homicide: Life on the Streets was his iconic role for a long time, there weren't enough Emmys for him in that show.
He was also in a hidden gem called "Frequency" with Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel

Those who don't know history are doomed to repeat it. Never understood why people don't want to watch something because it's sad or disturbing. Life has sad and disturbing events... learning to cope with such events is good, and a good cry is not a bad thing. It cleanses all the stress that those who pen up all their emotions aren't able to.

The Memorial to Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts Fifty-Fourth Regiment is a bronze relief sculpture by Augustus Saint-Gaudens opposite 24 Beacon Street, Boston. Peace out.
There was another monument to them that was vandalized and spray painted with grafitti by BLM activists. Talk about a disgrace.
Just a note. Flogging was a common corpral punishment in the military for crimes committed in trainingand in service. He wasn't flogged for shoes, he was flogged for leaving without permission or orders. In the military thats called desertion, a crime that at the time usually called for execution...
So considering he was arrested for desertion, getting flogged is getting off rather light.
I was going to add this. It was used in the Navy as well until corporal punishment was removed from all services. It’s harsh seeing a former slave being punished this way but it was standard practice. While he got off light, flogging is actually much more intense than the see portrays.
The flogging of US troops was banned by the US in 1861 and the 54th was formed in 1862. So, Shaw wouldn't have had the option to flog his troops. If he had he would've been dishonorably discharged from the army at the very least. And I don't believe there were any reports or even letters from the men where they mentioned flogging of any of the men of the 54th.
There was another option for desertion, which was being sent to a POW camp with the possibility of hard labor added to that for the duration of the war. Which would've probably been a death sentence as well because Union POW camps would've been full of Confederate soldiers.
@@stonecoldku4161 From what I've read it still continued in practice for many years. There is a difference between it being outlawed and it actually ending. Many leaders believed it to be good for keeping those who viewed the flogging in line as well. In this dramatized movie, it was shown not to depict Shaw as a racist who wants to whip black soldiers, but as a man who is doing what he thinks he should do to keep discipline in the ranks. Especially given his men are not respected at all by society.

It may have been common practice to flog, however, the scene was about the effect it had on Denzels(character) that was impactful. Trip was already emotionally and physically scared from being whipped as a punishment (from slavery), therefore it brought back the trauma of being dehumanized.
You don't have to explain the way you feel about anything. No honest person with a shred of decency can fault you for being angered by cruelty and mistreatment, because that's how decent, honest people are supposed to feel about cruelty and mistreatment.

I was the theatre projectionist when this film came to my town. I knew some of this story but was really angry that I knew so little, as it was mostly bypassed in school history classes. This is part of my history that was kept from me. Watched this movie endless times, but the scene of the 54th marching to the beach just killed me every time. (Nam Veteran) I knew where they were going and how bad it was going to be. A detail that impressed me: After the burning of the town, the troop marched away rolling the Flag and standard up; this was to hide the Flag from the shame that they had just witnessed and participated in. Thank You for your honest comments. MIKE
Great film. Denzel deserved his Oscar for Best Supporting Actor. The rest of the cast were great too. Fantastic score by James Horner.

It’s a good movie and personally speaking, I am proud of how hard the 54 fought. I just have a deep issue with what happened afterwards during reconstruction and Jim Crow and it’s like we ain’t never get no kind of love or appreciation for what we did. My time in the military was with racists and ppl who looked the other pretending it wasn’t happening. But as far as the movie goes, it inspires me because of the courage of the brothers of the 54th. Much love Jay, loved the reaction.
Back then Flogging was the punishment for desertion, it didn't matter what color the soldier was. White or black if you were caught you either got flogged or you were hanged. It didn't matter your reason for deserting.

Actually, the US military had abolished flogging just before the war, so that whole scene was absolutely erroneous because they wanted to have a cheap symbolism pass.
@@ScarriorIIIit’s not cheap. It’s powerful. It’s a humiliating symbolism that blacks go through even in systems that claim are “helping” them. Even then I wouldn’t be surprised that laws were broken when black people are the victims of it like how it always was historically.

There were two future cast members of 'The Shawshank Redemption' in this film. Morgan Freeman and the corrupt cigar-smoking Union General who Matthew Broderick was asking to give his men orders to fight. That was Bob Gunton who was the prison warden at Shawshank.
Edward Zwick has directed some AWESOME movies. Besides this epic, he also did Blood Diamond, The Last Samurai, and - my favorite - LEGENDS OF THE FALL.
Courage under fire is another underated Gem. Denzel & Meg Ryan

"But we's men, aint we?" My second favorite Denzel moment in the movie. Theyve been treated like animals and children their whole lives and now they have the chance to stand up and kick in and make their own destiny like any other human. And now they can see it themselves.

As others have noted, it is not perfectly accurate to real history, but there is so much about the film that is so right that the things they got wrong fade to pretty much no importance. It is some of the best acting performances by Denzel and Morgan Freeman and Andre Braugher and Broderick and Elwes, and one of the best movies about the Civil War ever made.
RIP Andre Braugher, one of my favorite actors.

Forgot to mention this earlier but Thomas was played by Andre Braugher. His first role was playing a sidkick to Kojak in Kojak. His first movie role was Glory.
He played a detective in the series Homicide and a Captain in the series Brooklyn Nine-Nine. A role you may recognize him from is he played Davids neighbor Brent in the movie The Mist.
Andre Braugher actually recently died back in December of last year.
Great film, and a hell of a Denzel performance. Speaking of which, you NEED to watch 'A Soldier's Story' from 1984. That's one of the most underrated films of the 80s, it's one of Denzel's early roles, and it's a performance that lets you know just how long he's been a great actor.

I did living histories for over 30 years. It was even on my evals in the Navy as community involvement. I got to be on the field with the 54th Mass one time; Tunnel Hill, GA... those guys were amazing to watch. They had such a great impression. I have marched through events from Dallas Tx to Gettysburg Pa... and those men were the best presentation I saw on a field.
