Here's what the samurai were eating at that time: ua-cam.com/video/68fJDdhzgTk/v-deo.html Thanks for watching everyone! I know it's been a while since I posted a video, but I thank each and every one of you for waiting! Hopefully I can get back to a regular uploading schedule soon! Take care and stay safe, and we'll talk soon!
I really like the fact that you also talked about the hiostory of Japan, the civil war and farmers in all of this. The movie "7 samurais" was first thing I thought of while watching this part. Great video, looking forward to seeing another one!
This was I interesting to see. I hope you continue to make content like this and share it with us.. Thank you for your content and sharing it with us..
This is really interesting! Growing up, I always knew my Japan born Grandma despised brown rice--which I ate and preferred for its health benefits. In her eyes brown rice was literally for peasants! Great video, doomo!
First, my dude, you are hilarious, you and Mrs. Eats make a fine pair. Second, that porridge actually looks quite nice and yummy to my eyes. With some modern condiment mix, or even just salt, I bet it would be quite tasty!
I wonder if this would be good as a sweet porridge? with dried fruit, or with honey or sugar added? My mother makes a mix of several grains for a morning porridge...
Oh wow! that looks really good! I recently bought a 7 grain mix, but i never tried it by itself! I'll have to give that a go (maybe with a lil seasoning hahaha)! Its funny tho...that now a 5lbs bag the o the mix grain could cost double the amount of white rice now!! hahaha thank you for the awesome history and foodie video straight up eats!! :))
That actually looks a LOT like a porridgy version of Korean Japgokbap... this is inspiring me to make some with a bit more liquid and toss in some Leeks! Thank you!
That food is rich in fiber so its healthy for sure. and I can make that porridge way more delicious using Indian methods making it suitable for present day consumption.
I loved this dish. With lotsa yummy toppings and miso on the side, just as you said. I’m Chinese, this seems like a much healthier and quicker version of congee. My toppings: fish cake, salted duck egg, tofu, spicy radish, seaweed, braised greens, fermented tofu or natto. Not all at once though!
It looks like buckwheat which also doesnt taste too good without anything added. Pure its also just like slightly "caramelized rice" (with some sugar and cinnamon it tastes good)
its understandable if the early centuries were yet to be developed and thought only shiny things were great etc , but today Japan and the world will no doubt recommend that this was and is one of the most healthiest food we humans should be eating on this planet when we still can.
In the 7 Samurais, the young Samurai ate the farmers' food to better understand them and complained how awful it tasted. It was translated as millet. I didn't know what it meant so I read the dictionary and it defined millet as corn and I was like "Corn is delicious! Why is he complaining?" But, yeah, this dish doesn't look like corn lol Still, I would try it.
Millet is just a generic catch-all word. In the Americas it would have commonly been corn but any small grain is a millet. Anything "milled" is "millet" and milling is just a part of the process of producing food from grains. Either to grind the grain into a powdered flour, or to remove the exterior husk(s) which are generally considered inedible.
you have to love the smell of rice if you want to understand japanese food. your monster bite of miso makes me question your thought process though lol
This really looks delicious and I love porrages and meals like this. Perfect for the cold weather also! Love the history behind the dish as well. Fun and great video as always :)

Anyone have a source/name of the grain mix featured in this video?
Your channel it's great! :O
1:35 this is way healthier without the white rice
That food is rich in fiber so its healthy for sure.

This was the kind of video I was looking for. THE REAL TRADITIONAL JAPANESE FOOD
I was really confused when I saw this since my asian parents make this very oftenly, we just call it various grain congee!
Where samurai mre? :(

2:46 so....like India NOW
Is that raw miso? I would probably mix it with the grains on the stove.
Not the pooping in the streets 😖 SF -since always too prob- can relate
It looks like buckwheat which also doesnt taste too good without anything added. Pure its also just like slightly "caramelized rice" (with some sugar and cinnamon it tastes good)
This porridge is named Katemeshi
Ancient samurai MRE? My guess is, Natto, chimaki, and some pickled or dried meat, prob fish.
Please make Aaaruuul

Whatever happened to your channel?? You just dropped off since a year ago.
I thought red rice was extinct
It's a pity that there are no subtitles, my English is extremely bad.
