Richard Strauss: Elektra - Finale Metropolitan Opera, 1994 Otto Schenk Production Elektra: Hildegarde Behrens Chrysothemis: Deborah Voigt No copyright infirngement intended.
I have not seen anything like this before. What a performance and put the scandals aside Levine was a great conductor who knew how to conduct the opera.
This is, in my opinion, the single greatest performance ever recorded for the opera. I'm so blessed to have seen her live in concert. She will always be my favorite. And pre-surgery Voigt's voice is glorious.
Have collected hundreds of videos of operas and this rates at the very top. Behrens is simply transcendent. The rest of the cast is also outstanding, as is the orchestra. This is one of those events that all of us who love opera dream of but so rarely experience. Grabs you from the first dramatic chord and never lets go. The response of the Met crowd speaks for me as well. The sound of opera lovers well satisfied.
This may be one of the greatest performances ever captured for video. I attended one of the nights in this series. Behrens somehow became Elektra in both voice and character. And the added bonuses of Voigt's radiant voice and Levine's conducting.

My go-to performance when I need to cry...the music, conducting, production, singers..SINGERS! Wow...Unbelievable...(Saw G Jones in this in NYC and many other singers but Behrens..wow)
With the wild dance at finale Otto Schenk (stage director) certainly had the St. Vitus dance in mind, as it can be seen in medieval depictions. - Heinz p.s. Behrens demonstrates what German music term "Ausdruck" means at singing.
This entire scene is so bizarre. This opera is a crazy ride. The dancing at the end was hilarious and weird. The shocking death sudden. Voight is absolutely radiant. Behrens sounds tired and yet still solar.

When Voigt still had her opulent instrument intact. Behrens the iconic ‘Kuntsdiva’ - she is absolutely riveting, but the voice is and was an artificial construct.
I was in this performance as the Fifth Maid. I'll never forget it.
Beautifull character
That’s amazing!!!!
Best Elektra ever, her acting is unbeliveable.
And talk about Voigt, her last note is an absolute miracle.
Oh, come on. Voigt can hardly move, she's morbidly obese.
When Voigt sang the second Orest is when I just became a huge fan.

I saw Behrens as Elektra just once (Christa Ludwig was Klytaemnestra!). Fabulous performance!

Even After many years…. You are so Right! Havent Seen Elektra nowhere more brillant than this Production. I am really thrilled!
Lot of love
Uwe
Probably the only Elektra I have seen who actually expressed the death dance.
Behrens was an incredible actress

Voigt was PHENOMENAL here!!!!
Thank you!

@@heldofhil7 Hildegard Behrens’s children are Phillip and Sara. You present yourself as Ms. Behrens’s daughter. Are you related in some other way?

Also, my brother‘s name is spelled „Philip“- one L, one P.😉
☝️I’m terrible at this UA-cam reply stuff. Hope you get the bit about the correct spelling of my brother’s name.
She is Elektra. Her performance is amazing. She's my favourite Wagnerian soprano
❤️❤️
She was truly a GREAT artist ❤
I'm pretty sure this is the performance I stumbled upon at 13 one night that sparked my interest in opera. I'd love to see the rest of it.
Mankind has produced atrocities beyond belief - and then there is something like this ! Utter perfection in realms that words cannot describe.
This is WILD!! Wtf!! The singing is unparalleled
Behrens, Voight sensational both !!! Wow !!!
When someone has a voice like Voigt had, frankly, who cares what they look like.
My go-to performance when I need to cry...the music, conducting, production, singers..SINGERS! Wow...Unbelievable...(Saw G Jones in this in NYC and many other singers but Behrens..wow)
I just found this and my GOD...this is electric!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brilliant!!!!!!!

Behrens was 57 years old here - FIFTY-SEVEN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-O
Holy cow.
She also started very late which allowed her to continue singing later in her life.
Amazing performance. Two electrifying artists. Bravi👏👏
Thank you 🙏 so much for uploading this gem 💎 !!!!
I love this production.
I am spellbound! Just magnificent!
Meravigliosa
Danke vielmals 🌹
Behrens is not to be believed!
GRANDISSIMA Hildegard Behrens... RIP!

World class act!!
A great moment for James Levine too!
Pure fire
Debbie should have never lost all those pounds. She was a force of nature!
Wow ..☺️
Chilling!

This fucks so hard. Every time Deborah Voigt sings "Hörst du nicht? So hörst du denn nicht?" it's like "Yes mommy, fuck me up."

Behrens' singing is mediocre and faulty, but her acting is madness to perfection! Voigt is at her absolute peak here (6:40)!!
