Great entry!!! I am one of those and nobody remember us when posting info on alpinism and climbing. Thanx for your ideas. In Spain we also wear glasses and go to the mountains 😂😂😂

A tip I picked up that is useful for glasses and non glasses wearers. Using the magnifying lens on a compass like a monocle. Hold it up to your eye and move the map to focus. Easy to read and easier to pick out the small features.

Wish I'd have had these top tips on my ML assessment some ten years ago as I had just started wearing glasses. Weather was drizzly, grey cloudy and windy. Not to put blame on the centre running the course but they issued us candidates with laminated photo copied maps which to be fair weren't the best and not very clear. I got a little confused with rain on my glasses and water droplets on laminated map and messed up on the day so got deferred for my nav. Some months later I went back to take the navigation assessment again on a sunny fine day and passed no problem. Great tips for anyone in that position. Love the videos, keep them coming. 👍

      Glad you liked the video!
Glasses definitely add to the difficulties!

VARIFOCALS. I’m a classic mid-life reading glasses wearer. Putting them on and off and in my pocket was a steam-up DISASTER. One day I wore my varifocals continuously for ML night nav and it changed EVERYTHING. In pouring wind and rain at night I passed. 😃💪🏻

this is why I was at the optician yesterday ordering a pair !! I got him to give me some extra zoom on the map-reading section of the glasses, as well as a tiny boost on the long-range.

Great advice Jez, another tip for glasses wearers, is to wear a pair of clear ski goggles over the top of the glasses, you can always wipe them with rainex or carry a spare glass cleaner to wipe. Another tip to stop them steaming up in putting fairy liquid inside the goggles ( obviously just a smear and wipe effort), I’ve spent a bit of time living in the arctic environment with buddies that wear glasses and this works. Not as good as getting your eyes Lazed!!!!

Rainex shouldn't be used on glasses as it will strip the coating. But the goggles+rainex solution seems sound

The rainex is one I mean to try but never done it yet as bottle says don’t put on polycarb lenses. However as you says bikers use it.
There is also a thing made for the airlines which is Duxback. Supposed to last 6-12 months and be better at beading water.
For just fogging or now a days anyone wearing a mask - get a bottle of Muc-Off anti-fog!! Developed for cyclists but it’s brilliant. Spray on, wipe with a cloth/toilet roll and they won’t fog for 3/4 days. Bottle has lasted me near a year of hill walking and now using it every week for gen use.

Where's Wally?? Haha. Lovin your videos, I'm short sighted & have to wear glasses. A baseball cap is my 'go to' in the rain. Reminded me that I've been meaning to get 'one of those glasses retainer things' (what are they ever called??) for a while as they do get knocked off occasionally & then you can't see to find them!! Super annoying.

I wore contacts or glasses, but after knocking my glasses off on some trad leads, getting a bit of grit in my eye (somehow much worse with contacts) and ultimately getting a corneal ulcer when trapped by storm high on Mt. Rainier, I had a nice lady shoot laser beams in my eyes 25 years ago. My vision is still great, and even though the price was about 5 times higher then, it was *totally* worth it. Priceless.

Scan + print sections of map 2:1 zoom and put sticky plastic sheet (plastic both sides, In addition to carrying the "real" map) is great advice for anyone, not just glasses wearers

Tricky one Jez. My wife is an optometrist so I have the advantage of an expert on hand. For me the go to is the cap and hood solution - low tech and you always have a hood! I have a great rubberised magnifying glass which I got from Decathlon. The lens is about 4 times the size of the small one on a Type 4 Silva compass, but small enough to fit into a chest pocket with your compass and MTA timing card. Unfortunately they don’t seem to be stocking it at the moment, a bit like your sewn prussiks. 😅
I have tried varifocal contacts. Great during the day and in good light conditions, but not great as the light dims.
Everything is a comprise, so as you quite rightly said - go out and practise.
I am going to try the lens coating.
    Cheers Jez.

Nice one Jez! My eyes have been getting worse recently and I relized on my mountain leader training that I definitely have an issue with them. And it is a bit of a concern as I've never had any problems before so this vid is really helpful. I've got some glasses I'll be getting myself a strap and a water proof cap and I'll get some practice in with them.

Sunnto compass which has a larger than average magnifyer has been my new friend since doing ML. Silva's one is ok but these are huge in comparison

yeah cap is the best Option, plus even though I hardly ever wear them I always take a pair of contacts with me just incase. deffo gonna try rainex though.

Defo revisit contacts as so many new types and more comfy. My top tip is baseball cap or mountain cap to keep rain of my specs. Defo have a back up plan as you already said. I have varifocal disposable contacts, who would have thought such a thing exists.
Hopefully the tech exists now in laser to fix my mince pies, as I am likely to start a Forrest fire with suns rays bouncing off my lenses.

Contacts are brilliant! On a multi day trip it can be a little annoying to get your hands clean for putting them in and out at night but when they’re in I can’t even feel them. Absolutely fantastic

May I ask a random question? Do you feel a lone mountain walker should have a garmin in-reach or some other location device? Can you recommend a tracker app for an Android phone instead of forking out a couple hundred pounds for a garmin in-reach? Rgds
    Imran

    • @JBMountainSkills

Personally I don't think they're necessary, but I can see why some would disagree!
I'm afraid I don't have any idea about tracker apps.

I found that for night nav the wrong design of headtorch - one which shines over the surface of the glasses - makes life difficult. Get a headtorch which blocks stray light from doing this.

Hey, thanks for the tips! Out of curiosity what age did you get your eyes lazered at, and have you had any decrease in vision since or have they been stable? Thinking about getting mine done but wondering when to go for it.

A little caution on Zasik...... they will tell you that that 95 out of a 100 people LOVE it. (Or some such number). That's wonderful. Consider however if you were one of the 5 like me. Before Lasik I was COMPLETELY dependant on glasses. After Lasik, I still have to wear glasses (which was kind of the whole point).
But worse..... although my UNCORRECTED vision is MUCH better, hooray, the uncorrected is nowhere near acceptable.. The punchline however is that my CORRECTED vision is now worse than before. Also my night vision is a real pain in the ass: major halos on oncoming headlights at night.
Bottom line, this procedure is wonderful and has helped many people. Just decide if 95 out of 100 is good enough odds to gamble worse vision.
