  • Due to some new footage that got discovered lately we have quite a lot of Duncan Edwards on tape now - including a full game against Didi's Brazil. I've compiled all of the best bits into the most comprehensive (up to date) compilation of Edwards' career.

Disappointed not to play against Duncan on 1951 in a school cup game on Dudley,My team was from Holyhead Rd school on Wednesbury. Was told by one of Duncan's team mates, good job he ay playing against you it's like playing against a man. We all loved this son of our Black Country,Wolves,Albion ,Walsall we all felt the same.It was a great honour that this Black country lad played for Man United. I know they loved him like we did. Had pleasure in seeing him play at schoolboy international level and make his debut against Scotland at Wembley and score. Went to pay homage at his Statue on Dudley a couple of weeks ago.A Black Country man to another' still the tears in my eyes.Yes,to me The Greatest.

My Dad always said Duncan Edwards was the Best player he ever seen, he used to go to Roker Park regular and would also go to St James just to watch this lad play, his hero at Sunderland was Len Shackleton who was a bit of a magician with the ball, But said Duncan Edwards made him look ordinary and was the only player that constantly did, died so tragically young but when you hear Bobby Charlton talk about him the way he did, you know he was more than just a bit special.

My father saw Duncan Edwards play in a friendly match here in Portugal. Portugal won rather handily the game 3-1, but my father would always claim the standout player had been Duncan Edwards ("he could turn the game around just like that!"), who should be then only 18 years old. Watching this footage, I have to agree that his passing skills and vision were uncanny. The speed with which Edwards transitions from defense to attack and sprays passes forward is truly phenomenal. I believe only the Hungarian Boszik could compare to him in that era.

Had he lived he would probably have captained England in the World Cup of 1966. Bobby Moore would have been second choice in his position, while Beckenbauer would have been trying to prove he was as good as Edwards. The Busby Babes team would likely have prevented Real Madrid from winning five consecutive European Cups. Tragic there are so many might-have-beens. Being a Scot, I wished we had a Duncan Edwards.

    • @HarmsFootball

I doubt that Edwards would've played at centre-back, it's a bit of a weird cliché with him, Moore and 1966 World Cup. He would've played in midfield, which was his best position, with Moore marshaling the backline and Charlton playing slightly further forward.

I've always had this thing about outstanding players who can do things those around them or play against can't match whilst remembering that the greatest players need excellent players around them to bring out their best which is where Duncan playing along side his talented indispensable teammates in the Busby Babes (& Jimmy Murphy's Boys) can help the genius player reach their full potential.
Duncan was ahead of his time in tactics and training (Jimmy Murphy said he was the most strategic player he ever met) and awareness of training and care of both body and mind. A great player can predict the likely options of where the game will be played moves ahead before others see it which is why you see in many of these clips he is there to intervene and tackle just in the right place at the right time.
I'm not a ManU fan but have tears in my eyes when I see what was lost in such a tragic way by a ridiculous urgency and pressure to get home on schedule despite the fear of all aboard the plane of possible impending doom.

Obviously a very, very good player but , as with all very good players of the past, he is remembered as being even better than he actually was ( and he WAS very, very good). The tragedy of his untimely death has added quality to those memories. Sorry if that seems a bit negative but do remember I am agreeing that he was very, very good !
