Just saying, I called it now: At some point someone is going to figure out that the dark archon is actually just a good unit in PvZ and that it is in fact possible to make more than one too. And at that point we are all going to be talking about how smart that player is.
I think most Protoss pros realize how good Maelstrom is in PvZ, it's just the APM/multitasking requirement of both Psi Storm and Maelstrom along with regular army micro might be a bit much to manage. Also the gas cost of fielding both spellcasters is quite high.
I feel like this game especially highlights how good the DAs are. Having just one effectively made him take close to 0 damage from the mutas. Even if it taxes their apm, leave them in a more defensive position and expand to your hearts desire. The threat of even a few seems exponentially higher and makes attacking into you seems almost hopeless.
@@Gamerextra1029 Not saying it's easy, but paralyze managed to juggle both his army, corsairs, templars and a DA at the same time this game. @@Junglej0hn That is certainly a hot take! I think it boils down to Protoss needing Psi Storm/possible Archons more than they need Maelstrom. Some games you just can't have both. One thing I will say is a common trend among almost all of the "up and coming" players is they are relatively error prone in the mid to late game when compared to the top level players. Personally, I believe this is because they get to practice their early game literally every game, but only a percentage of their games go past 2-3 bases. Thus it feels like they're still learning their limits and trying to figure out what to do on the map when they get there.
These casts are so enjoyable to watch. When I was a kid I had an uncle who would always be watching football games at our family Christmas party. I didn't get it. Now I do. You have to have played the game yourself before you can appreciate mastery. And the continued evolution of strategy reveals the brilliance of the game.
14:00 It's the same with not using items in games in case you need them later. You end up with a full inventory of items you never use that would've made the game easier.
3:00 well he gets up to the top of the ramp and sees.... that either there's a hatch on the map or he's about to die because lings got around him! 3:50 yeah this is much more than "kill 2 zealots" number of zerglings, which is playing into paralyze's comfort zone, tbh, he really wants you to attack him. 4:33 wow, beautiful parry there, that did basically no damage at all for all those zerglings... that's real bad for zerg. oh man, paralyze will even move out with 4 zealots to check for a hydra bust! fantastic. 5:11 at this point paralyze should know there's no hydra bust coming, or if it is coming, it's going to take a while to arrive, too many zerglings built here. we can see Z on only 16 drones, hydra bust 9-7-3 means you want at LEAST 19. 19 drone hydra bust is actually very aggressive and probably needs to do some damage. we actually see Z going to 21 drones and den before lair, so this will be a delayed bust. will be a long time before we get everrything, and he has to hope these zerglings deter protoss from thinking he can get fast storm. 5:38 ok, so often we actually say if 3 speedlings get in your main, you lose, but this WAS a gate expand and there should be plenty of zealots to chase this around. gonna be tough to defend without losing a bunch of probes but paralyze is a good defender, let's see it! 7:00 ok, so where are we, the lings are cleaned, the main has a cannon, so no more ling runbys, hydra range not done yet, citadel nearly done, still have several zealots and there should be 3 cannons done/nearly done by the time range finishes. the corsair is on the map and should be able to scout if drones or hydras are hatching to tell paralyze if he needs a 4th cannon. this so far looks holdable! 7:33 yup! sair in zerg's base, hydras hatching adds a 5th cannon! legs have started. hydra range STILL not done! 4th hatch and now Z has started to drone (although none have hatched yet) i think he's made enough hydras that he needs to at least kill a lot of zealots, preferably before zealot speed finishes. interesting note here, paralyze weaves in a gateway; even though he hasn't seen any drones hatch, very brave, many toss would just keep adding cannons. 8:00 good greif he's not even gonna get the wall. paralyze has parried this beautifully, should be significantly ahead. i like how he reacts to this btw: "i'm ahead, i'll go second forge, if i'm not ahead, i'll lose the forge at my front so i'll need to rebuild this anyway, if i am ahead, i'll end up with great upgrades this game." very smart. 8:37 sees lair, cancels the cannons *takes notes* 9:20 we see that the gateway explosion was very well timed but the archives is quite late and storm has not started yet, wonder if he'll get an archon? or maybe just some DTs? we gotta spend those 2 gasses on something. edit: looks like it's a DT AND an archon (probably) and then starting storm. i like this because we have so many gates that we're gonna have plenty of extra gateway time to add that archon as a fighting unit, even though it's too early to make 2 templars and wait for storm (storm won't be done for ages here) 9:49 wanted to talk about this: we see that even though zerg's bust actually fell on its face a bit, one thing that HAS been gained is that toss couldn't get +1 air weaps. and now, it's actually too late, if you start +1 air weaps now, dragoon range will be WAY too late if Z goes lurkers. because of this, there's not really going to be a speedzealot/corsair "pressure" phase of the game, because the spire will be able to fairly easily chase away corsairs with scourge. however, in this case, because paralyze parried the hydra bust so well, his push will be very strong, and Z will have a hard time breaking it. 10:19 3rd gas starts before lurker, probably mutas. looks like paralyze DID actually hold onto those 2 templars which is crazy to me, but they should have plenty of energy with storm finishing up soon! 11:10 and there's maelstrom. there's mutas coming from Z, but second DT is coming, he may bring the one home that's on the map to make the DA, 2/2 on the way for toss, robo coming, he'll be ready for lurkers whenever Z decides to go that direction, goon range, which is actually important for any push, lurkers or no. i think there's 10 gates. i don't know if Z can hold this. even if he knows about the DA he still can't dive to snipe templars while it's there or he'll just lose them all for 3 spells. and yes, he pulls the DT he had on the map from earlier, i'm sure he'll merge that one. 12:00 iono, remember RT, mutas don't have any vision range! rofl 12:40 this is my biggest point about the DA, yeah, ok, so now Z's seen it, but what's he gonna do about it? it's still doing it's most important job: the mutas cannot snipe templars while that thing's here. anyway, here come the goons, i think he has to knock down at least 2 cannons to reasonably flow his army out of his base here lol. expands behind the push, i like it. again, the early game went in toss' favor and i just don't see how this push will be stopped. there's so much protoss! 13:45 hm... spends a maelstrom, the mutas are still out there tho... if he had 200 energy i would be totally fine with that, as it is, i'm skeptical. let's remember: the reason we build this unit is to protect templars from mutas. 14:19 ok, 3rd gas on the way for paralyze, he will probably flood templars and just value Z to death on the back of this. really good army movement from Z to keep the push back though. 15:03 yeah, i mean, mutas go for counterplay, because if he tries to snipe templars, he's going to lose them all for nothing and immediately lose the game, makes sense. 15:21 ok, so in theory i like the counterplay from Z, the problem is, how to stop this ball of protoss from rolling you over at your choke, now.... 16:08 ok, again, nice maelstrom, except, now there isn't one for the mutas, and all the templars are now dead... Paralyze will have to back off here. i really want him to rebuild the DA but it's gonna take a while to have maelstrom again. Z knows it, adds another flock of mutas. 17:16 ok, i wanna say. these upgrades from toss are NUTS. you're not supposed to be able to sit and slug with goons against hydras. GG! can't deal with the hydras when all your templars die! really think the critical moment was when he got the big eyes and went for the maelstrom on 3 lurkers rather than holding it to protect his templar. Also it's really weird that he has SO MANY GOONS, and is building more, and doesn't have many storms at all. thanks RT!
Overreliance on goons killed him probably, a few more storms would've been gamechanging later on, but mutas kept sniping them so he had to somehow take care of those too
@@LoLaSn Well he had a DA, if he'd hold the maelstrom he'd be able to permanently zone those mutas out and protect those templar. i just didn't like how he played it at the end. should have been a winniing advantage.
I agree with your after game summary. An easy way to boost your win rate is to make the game easy for yourself. Sure, maybe you will win with that attack with a small advantage. But it you wait for the small advantage to be a big advantage things are just easier.
Lol I did not know Artosis played MTG. I played since Odessy thru Amonkhet had my occasional off and ons. Got to where I had some pro points and when to 1 pro tour.
A lot of times, i get to miss a lot of fights as our speaker would scroll around the map highlighting some things. I hope we could have another host with him that stays his screen on where fights would usually start so we can enjoy more.
he didnt have a 4th planned, blundered his attack and his reinforcements which were sitting at the rally as he moved in to blunder. on top of that he was massing more dragoons while he still had a huge pile and was not stocking templar because he lost a few to the mutas and probably thought they were just gonna die anyways. but with them it is always better than they die casting even 1 decent storm than you die because they never existed
Dark archon was op. Do a massive attack on their base and steal a drone. You just turned it into a 1 vs 2 situation. And you can quickly skill up the 2nd or 3rd race even. Build a handful of drones and hide them so you never really lose it. And you’ve basically got 150+ supply to fuel another army.
I honestly don't understand why dark archons aren't considered a "must build" unit vs zerg every game. The fact that all zerg units can be affected by maelstrom seems like a borderline cheat code, especially when combined with psi storms.
@@alexinfinite7142 And the craziest part is dark templar/ dark archons follow the exact tech tree as high templar...So it's not like you even have to go out of your way to get dark archons and templar together. Seems stupidly cost efficient.
Two reasons: 1 is combined with high templars they would be too gas heavy. and 2 Maelstrom is harder to cast, they always have some delay whereas storm is quicker
P’s major mistake was showing DA to the mutas and didn’t use the spell. If muta shows up first time and DA locked them down and storm dead, Z wouldn’t be able to accumulate mutas. Those muta sniped lot of High templars and made dragoon dead meat VS hydras. Dragoon heavy army really rely on storms, zergs small unit file received reduced damage from dragoon. When mass ling and hydra coming, P units with slow fire rate without storm and reaver will just automatically lose, no matter if you are 2/2 upgrades or not.
17:22 You just confirmed what I've been thinking for 20 years. Did you know that dragoons, even though they have twice the attack damage per hit as a hydralisk, basically does more like half the damage. Hydralisks attack twice as fast so that already makes up for the difference in the hit points, but they're also smaller so you get more surface area for them to attack than goons. It's really annoying because I always thought dragoons voices sounded cool when I played starcraft when I was young. I liked playing as protoss but I realized that dragoons were weak compared to hydralisks. It would be cool to have strong dragoons or fast shooting ones so they could be the backbone of the protoss army. Maybe even have them as walking shield batteries. StarCraft seems unbalanced specifically because of dragoons alone. They can't hold up to siege tanks any day.
Hey Arty, i know you always cast high level pros here, but is there any chance you’ll give us replays of your matches on the channel and you commentate them in the same fashion? Hey Artosis, big fan. Do you think DA has any utility with their mind control ability? I often wonder what one mind control on a lurker could do if there are no overlords around. I imagine this has been hashed out and the DA usually dies before it would be relevant, but I always wondered what kind of hydralisk carnage could occur from an opportunistic mind control.
Getting one dark archon with maelstrom costs 350/300. Not cheap but compare that to like 7, 8 or 9 mutas. And even if no mutas show up, you can still get value by casting on hydras, so i really dont understand why its used so little
I don't understand the early game aggression. Protoss can expand better when the zerg has no mutalisks. Why wait? The economics of fully saturated base is worse than small expansions anyway.
@@MeteCanKarahasan You mean for the Protoss?!? You don't usually expand until about 12 or 13 minutes in PvZ, then after the third you get your 4th like 1 minutes later as your natural dies out. You can't expand super early in PvZ. It's simply too violitile. Also you want to pressure the Zerg to force out lings and hopefully snipe a drone or 2. That's just how high level SC is.
@ yes but you are giving away full map control if you keep making probes to the detriment of your early game. It does not cover the cost once you reach one per mineral patch probe saturation.
@ No , you go up to 50 probes on 2 bases. If you didn't then you wouldn't be able to take a third and saturate a third. The maximum patch saturation is about 2.5 per patch.
@@alexfriedman2152 that is inefficient. You get the same amount of mineral harvest from 6 expansions with 9 probes each than three 25 probe expansions. If the third expansion shares 17 extra probes from the other two expansions, you get 25% less minerals.

12:40 this is my biggest point about the DA, yeah, ok, so now Z's seen it, but what's he gonna do about it? it's still doing it's most important job: the mutas cannot snipe templars while that thing's here. anyway, here come the goons, i think he has to knock down at least 2 cannons to reasonably flow his army out of his base here lol. expands behind the push, i like it. again, the early game went in toss' favor and i just don't see how this push will be stopped. there's so much protoss!
13:45 hm... spends a maelstrom, the mutas are still out there tho... if he had 200 energy i would be totally fine with that, as it is, i'm skeptical. let's remember: the reason we build this unit is to protect templars from mutas.
@ Fair, maybe a second DA would've been good just to make sure he always has a spare maelstrom to keep those birds away
So excited for the future of both these players
Love that he made 2 dts ran around and killed some hydras then made a DA. Scared the mutas away without energy
I love your analysis Artosis! I'll watch SC1 for life... But nothing beats Tastosis casting live, or semi-live, such as ASL 😊
- BattleAxe
I agree with your after game summary. An easy way to boost your win rate is to make the game easy for yourself.
Sure, maybe you will win with that attack with a small advantage. But it you wait for the small advantage to be a big advantage things are just easier.
Nukes are the most underappreciated unit. By FAR!
6:02 Artosis sawed a boat in half!!
Good PvZ is so entertaining to watch. Really fun push and pull!
Did not see it mentioned. beast made ASL s13, s12, s10, s9. He was top 16 in s12!
he didnt have a 4th planned, blundered his attack and his reinforcements which were sitting at the rally as he moved in to blunder. on top of that he was massing more dragoons while he still had a huge pile and was not stocking templar because he lost a few to the mutas and probably thought they were just gonna die anyways. but with them it is always better than they die casting even 1 decent storm than you die because they never existed
Game made me realize how good maelstrom would be against repositioning lurkers. Something we never get to see.
19:15 Yep, like in Chess, material advantage is especially impt for Protoss due to their clunky production and high costs.
Do you get double supply max?
We love your chills Arty :)
I appreciate it.
I honestly don't understand why dark archons aren't considered a "must build" unit vs zerg every game. The fact that all zerg units can be affected by maelstrom seems like a borderline cheat code, especially when combined with psi storms.
You can use feedback to brutal effect as well. I was shut down hard once by a barrage of snipes. It was like reversing spawn broodling
@ It's still cost effective. The fact that both units follow the same tech tree makes up for the fact that they are gas heavy.
Uooh, that's some Arty's lore I didn't know! MtG was a great game as well
I appreciate it
P’s major mistake was showing DA to the mutas and didn’t use the spell.
Is there a world where Artois doesn’t get chills?
Love the videos. One question though, where does one keep up with the current brood war pro scene?
17:22
You just confirmed what I've been thinking for 20 years.
Thanks for the video.
I got a "warm chill" watching this
I did too, but only because I crapped my pants.
Might need to see a doctor
Great comeback by Beast after the massive failure of his early hydra push
20:45
brood wars is broodily unforgiving
Hey Early bird gets the... nothing. lol
2nd mouse gets the cheese.
Hey Arty, i know you always cast high level pros here, but is there any chance you’ll give us replays of your matches on the channel and you commentate them in the same fashion?
I am willing to bet you like casting the pros because you want to learn from them, but perhaps reviewing your replays with us on this channel can give insights into your/your opponent’s shortcomings and strategies? You know, those “ah!” Moments where you/he went here, saw this, did that in response, “man, i shoulda done this instead” etc.,?
Just a thought. I personally would enjoy it (i am biased, i watch anything that involves terran)
Embrace the chills 🥶
Do you have a recommendation on where/how to watch ACS qualifiers? Thanks again for the daily content!
Hey welcome back to my favorite part of the day a new video
Great game and great cast
Hey Artosis, big fan. Do you think DA has any utility with their mind control ability? I often wonder what one mind control on a lurker could do if there are no overlords around. I imagine this has been hashed out and the DA usually dies before it would be relevant, but I always wondered what kind of hydralisk carnage could occur from an opportunistic mind control.
I see ArtosisCasts, I click.
I have seen mass hydra work many times against Z and T
Cold bahn this mawnin’
Ayuh, awful chilly
Getting one dark archon with maelstrom costs 350/300. Not cheap but compare that to like 7, 8 or 9 mutas. And even if no mutas show up, you can still get value by casting on hydras, so i really dont understand why its used so little
Every game with dark archon is a loss
Good game. Great analysis!
So can units not attack if they get drilled?
Love me some Dark Archon gaming.
Starting to notice a pattern that if a particular unit or play is shown in the thumbnail, that player is definitely gonna lose lol.
Just blocking spoilers
Starting +1 armor while there's still hydra at your front door is just disrespectful 😅
Paralyze had two forges but never made double upgrades
Just saw that MC is playing in SCS, any chance we can see how he's playing?
Where can I watch ssl?
Great game by Beast
If you stop getting chills, global warming wins arty, are you gonna let that happen?
with Magic the gathering it is important to balance mana use with card efficiency
Yep, sometimes you gotta use the mana to remove something, even if it isn’t the optimal target
Yeah, what a superb TvP.
Nice post game analysis!
DAs are definitely the most underrated Protoss unit PvZ.
Yeah.... He tried to just END the game after killing the 4th. Also he didn't make enough HT. He made an extra round of goons instead of HT.
Yay, paralyze, my favorite!
4:51 chill
Beast did make it into an ASL, he didn't make it out of the round of 24 though. I might be thinking of Killer though so don't hold me to that.
I dont know what it is about SCBW, but it is just more fun to watch than SC2 is. This game will never die
new to artosis channel, is there a reason i’ve only seen him play terran? He seems so knowledgeable on other races i’m surprised he doesn’t stream outside terran
Occasionally he would play Protoss. I don't remember him playing Zerg (he's no good with Mutas). At the highest level you really need to focus on one race to be good.
ToiletTosis do u remember ur prime in HS? Yagut was excuting harvest golem just to utilize the spells
Hey Arty, i know you always cast high level pros here, but is there any chance you’ll give us replays of your matches on the channel and you commentate them in the same fashion?

Just a thought. I personally would enjoy it (i am biased, i watch anything that involves terran)
I’m too lazy to do this, but if I had replays of Arty getting stomped I would probably send them to him asking him to cast
Had the same idea while watching this video. Except my idea is that someone would modify the names, so that Artosis didn’t know he was commentating on himself.
@@dontGetMunsoned that would be pretty funny. Imagine him talking crap about the terran the entire video then someone in the comments does the big reveal
“Yeah I don’t know what this guy is doing….look at this he has 5 SCVs idling by his command center.”
“So these vultures are gonna try and get in here and try and get a couple of probes, but his micro isn’t that good…yeaaaahhhh he isn’t gonna get a lot done here”
@Larsgman That would give me chills.
Every time I see a dark archon, protoss always loose 😁
Where's ForGG at?
It did fuck all in this game though. Much as I love DA's
I hate defilers but love every other energy unit
ToiletTosis give us ur review on speed vs brain
RT is constantly saying dragoons is the unit you dont want to loose but I never heard him say why. Anyone can enlight me on this topic?
Because if you don't have goons the game can spiral out of control quickly, especially vs T. Also they are expensive and take longer to build.
The mistake was to rely too much on dragoons . More dark archons and high templars would have cut it
Cisa.
Beast made it in already Arty, maybe even several times. Think he had fairly poor showings though. Think he won CNSL and came top4 in the tournament Nyoken's channel co-hosts.
Protoss compared to Terran? Chills
Paralyze pvz game sense is amazing. Early game its almost like maphack. Shame that the monentum overconfidence lost him this game.
Wondering if his pvp and pvt are similarly good
Good game!
GG
Cast more snow plz
a minor chill
a "warm chill?
Hello fellow mtg grinder
RT, can you cast SimCity 3000 at once?
For the algo
Today was a first. I heard the SC1 music and finally said: "I have had enough of this music."
And that's when you knew I was lying.
Someone makes a probe, artosis gets a nerd chill.
PvZ really is just like TvP, you make 1 mistake and you die
"Umm & you know like yea like pre yea, like"
