  • From the National Weather Service to the County of Santa Cruz, the authorities had been warning for days that the incoming swell was likely to mean up-to 30-foot seas on Dec. 28.

And after a wet Wednesday, the big Thursday sets didn't bring much in the way of precipitation. That was appreciated, as the significant quantity of water moving about was already keeping firefighters and other emergency personnel pretty busy. Multiple wave forecasters ultimately put the midday peak in the 20-25-foot range, although there were certainly outliers.
It sure was incredible to witness a handful of hardcore surfers making the most of Mother Nature's fury.
And as the size dropped slightly, towards the evening, it was cool to see others heading out for a piece of the action, too.

Nice to watch a video from someone who actually understands the nuances of making it through the sections at Indicators.

Great shots, great editing/timing. All around well documented this is a cool sight to see! Currently I just witnessed some amazing king tides in seaside Oregon. We saw only one surfer try paddling out to the waves and couldn’t get all the out due to the mass amount of water and awkward patterns. After some piers including me showed some concern he just rode a big waves white wash all the way back into shore! Was insane to see how high the water gets.
Similar to this. Rock on! 🤙🏼🤟🏼

Elderly surfers with gray hair can still be seen along West Cliff, refusing to give up their passion for riding the waves. They may struggle a bit as they apply wax to prevent slipping on their boards, but the joy in their eyes is undeniable. While they may no longer be young and spry at 73, the thrill of the ocean still excites them. Making their way down to the break at Santa Cruz's famous Steamer Lane, they paddle out with determination, even if arthritis slows them down. Clad in wetsuits to keep warm, their smiles shine brightly. They may not have the agility of a 23-year-old, but to them, feeling 73 is just as invigorating.

I lived there and surfed it a lot. The waves are tall but have little power.

Exactly. I've paddled out many a day to that type and size of surf. No big deal. Except the time something down there wouldn't let go of my board.

Sharks are smarter than you think. Just ask Lewis Borden. Don't surf alone there.
