You know, everyone talks about Mark Hamill and Tim Curry in this game, but hardly ever mentions Leah Remini as Grace. It was awesome to hear you specifically bring her up. Totally agree!
When I was a kid I never knew who the voice actors were...but I loved em..and a couple years ago when I rewatched a play thru Grace's voice stood out and I was like I KNOW that voice!! Currently bought GK1 off steam and playing it now...sooo nostalgic
I remember my Dad changed telephone services or something and as a reward the company let you pick a Sierra game that they would send you for free. I picked Gabriel Knight, but I completely forgot about it. Then one Saturday I was completely bored and all of a sudden Gabriel Knight just shows up in the mail... I played it all night... that was such a good day.
Truly a masterpiece. This game gave me a unhealthy obsession with voodoo, hoodoo, New Orleans & Jazz Baby! The art style, voice acting and plot of this game just sucked me in. 2nd fav adventure game of all time

After so many years, perhaps it is a bit ridiculous to leave this comment, but while I was doing my own review I discovered something that I think you did not know, or at least you did not comment on in the review, and I would like to share: Laura Bow and Gabriel Knight occur in the same continuity! If you look at the Gabriel Knight Tulane College bulletin board enough times, you'll find the news that in a few weeks Laura Bow will be lecturing as the Pulitzer Prize winner. Likewise, in her name the surname "Dorian" also appears, confirming that Laura ends up marrying Steve Dorian. It would be an incredible game where Gabriel Knight and an elderly Laura Bow, like Jessica Fletcher, join forces to solve a mystery!
Chalk me down as another lover of the narrator. Tony Award winner Virginia Capers is magnificent and I kept clicking on everything just to hear her say her amazing lines. Best thing about the game.
It has to be said, I love your Manny Calavera necklace!!! Also, so jealous that you've been to New Orleans! I wanted to go since the first time I saw Interview With A Vampire when I was eight.
Me too, it was of the best experiences I had, I was completely observed by the atmosphere and followed the investigation... I felt like I am actually in there, interrogating and learning what is going on. I never played a game where the story is so woven together with the gameplay and puzzle and yet the puzzles are still so challenging.
Have you ever played the Blackwell games, by Wadjet Eye Games? They're a great series of classically styled games about a spirit medium and her ghostly friend, solving murders and helping people move on.
Gabriel Knight 1 and 2 both have stories that blend so well into real life facts. Really loved that about them. I also like the narrator but I admit she's not for everyone.
One thing I always loved about Gabriel Knight is how clearly influenced it is by the comic books of the time. You can clearly see that influence in the art, the atmosphere and even the plot. A lot of the art looks like it could have been drawn by Bill Sienkiewicz or Dave McKean. The whole thing is reminiscent of comics like Hellblazer (starring John Constantine) or Swamp Thing.
I read the graphic novel that came with it and the cover was 100% inspired by the Sandman covers from Dave McKean, it's so similar I even thought he did it himself
I just adore how Tim Curry can make just about anything sound sexy. Perhaps that's why my husband finds it a bit hard to listen to him talk, but I love it.
Adventure games are really good at sucking me in, but the problem is that I just don't have the patience for them. It's really my own fault. Anyway, I really wouldn't have known that was Tim Curry. No joke, I really couldn't tell it was him except for a few small parts where he hams it up.
Yeah, I know! He does a good job at sounding like someone completely different, save those parts where he falls out of it. He normally goes into Tim Curry when he has a really excitable line.
You've sold me on this game. I've never been a fan of the Sierra games due to some titles having serious moon logic but this title seems so atmospheric and well produced, taking me back to when I was first introduced to Broken Sword. I completely relate to your seeking out game locations when travelling. I plead guilty for spending a day riding the Paris metro looking for locations in Broken Sword and Deus Ex. Great review!
Probably my favorite Sierra game. It had everything that made old school adventure games awesome, including but not limited to the player discovering and exploring new locations throughout the game. A early 90s masterpiece.
I think you are my spirit animal! I am from Brazil and I actually played a good part of the adventure games you have played during my childhood (including the Titanic one and the cheesy Phantasmagoria). However, the Gabriel Knight series stands as one of the most amazing adventure games of all time! By the way, I am living in Berlin right now, and, when I was in Munich, I went to Marienplatz and tried to find the locations of the game (the square, the place were the hunt club was located at and the lawyer's office). And I am planning a trip to Ludwig's castle and, help me God, I will quick the walls just to make sure there isn't any Wagner opera hidden around. And I am also very curious to go to New Orleans to see what's up! Please keep up with your amazing videos!
OMG, so cool that Gabriel Knight inspired you to visit New Orleans!! I had the same experience with Gabriel Knight 2: it inspired me to visit Marienplatz in Munich and the Neuschwanstein castle. I took pictures of the scenes I'd seen in the game, and I was just ridiculously excited. I also moved to Germany later, but that's unrelated. Anyway, great review! I never made it past Day 1 in Gabriel Knight, I just couldn't figure out what I was supposed to do, lol. I need to go back to it one of these days. 😄
Now I need to track down a lets play of this game. It looks beyond fantastic. Thank you for introducing it to me, Roses! and people have commented a few times about it but I have to ask, where did you get your Manny necklace?
Your editing is amazing! As your review is told by parts of the game masterfully. And yes, I can see the influence voodoo had on you (the gothic type...) At any rate, this review is exactly what one needs in order to decide if he/she wants to play this game or not, well done (ten years older you)!
I went to New Orleans mainly because of this game (also Anne Rice novels, but I discovered them after Gabriel Knight) so you are not alone! Also became fascinated with Ludwig II and went to Neuschwanstein because of The Beast Within. :)
This game looks amazing. Well ofc being a Sierra title helps it a lot but it feels like one of those old-time murder mysteries (like the black and white ones) where there's a touch of comedy with a lot of serious story. As of all sierra games the backgrounds on this look gorgeous! Whoever made these for all the games I want your autograph! They just feel so alive and homey! :D Also great hair again PushingUpRoses, in fact I tried it myself and I honestly have never felt better or free. All thanks to you roses! :)
When I played this game, my computer was very underpowered. The game would run, but it ran incredibly slowly. It took several minutes (literally) for Gabriel to walk across the screen. The fact that I still finished the game is testament to how much I liked it.
I remember Gabriel Knight cover art always crept me out as a child. As a teenager I found this big ass Gabriel Knight collection box in some supermarket, but it cost like 100 bucks. Now, that I didn't buy it, it haunts me a bit.. As a collector only. The sequels haven't aged well. I've visited real life locations of videogames & films too. When I was in Paris with my girlfriend, we had to visit Rue Jarry because I wanted to see it in real life if it was like in Broken Sword! It wasn't.. It was just some street. But gladly Moulin Rouge and the Café from Amelie were awesome!
Got this game via a GOG "random game buy thing", was so excited that the first review to come up on youtube after my search is your review :) I'm not really sure if it's a game for me but I will check it out.
I loved this game, with its mature content and its many witty dialogues. I never get tired of Gabriel greeting Mosley with "Mostly"! By the way, Frick is a Sergeant and he hates stupid questions!
Yes to everything you said! I just finished playing this game last year (yes late on it) and I couldn't stop thinking about it. One of my favorite games ever.
Aaaahhh, this is one of my favorite games ever! The art, the theming, the ridiculous voice acting... it made me want to see New Orleans so badly, ever since I was a kid. I finally drove out there a few years ago, and made a point of visiting a bunch of the locations from the game. (And tried to explain to my girlfriend why I was geeking out SO HARD about Jackson Square...)
Before I went to college, having the lecture scene always stuck into my head as a kid. And once when I finally went into an actual lecture, the auditorium looks so similiar to GK:SoF that I had a major flashback on this. Of course, this game was so accurate on New Orleans landmarks, had to go there again to see back in high school. God wish I could play this game again. Also, nice Grim Fandango necklace. Looks awesome.
I had the Sierra Originals release of this game. I remember it came with a slip of paper in the jewel case correcting one of the puzzles (the "DJ Bring Sekey Madoule" one). Game patches, mid 90's style!
I loved this game. The Voodoo stuff really freaked me out. I love Tim Curry, but I did find his delivery too flamboyant for a womanizing writer, it made me feel he was a closeted gay man. Nice recap. The second game made me dream about going to Munich and the Neuchwenstein Castle, and it meant a lot when I did. PS: That lobotomy joke is pure gold. PSS: where's your Beast Within review?
After watching this review it made me watch a playthrough of the game (since I don't have it and decided it was something to listen to while working) and I agree it made me more interested in New Orleans and the history and about voodoo. I really hope one day I'll get a chance to play it.
I *loved* this game, and the third version (with the return of Tim Curry). I introduced it to a friend of mine in college in '97 and she loved it so much we went to New Orleans for Spring Break that year. Yup, it happened to us, too. :)
Tim Curry will always be my favourite actor/voice actor. I need to check this game out the character's are just wonderful. And the voice acting is music too my ears you don't hear amazing voice acting like this anymore. A damn shame.
My Favourite Adventure game series. I actually bought a second hand disc version of this when it first came out but the version was bugged so I couldn't get past a certain spot since an area wouldn't unlock, and since the Internet wasn't mainstream yet I had to mail a letter to Sierra about it - then got a letter back asking me to mail them the CD to look at it (they paid for postage) - then they sent me back a full boxed copy of the game minus bug. I also have boxed copies of Two and Three. I even pre-ordered the 20Th Anniversary Edition in hopes it would boost sales to make Gabriel Knight 4.
I recently played with this game, but haven't finished yet. This review pretty much sums up, it's defineately not an easy game, you don't event get text-hints where you have object of interest or not. The dialogues you had with other characters are also recorded by Gabriel to old-school tapes to read back later, but I haven't used them yet. I plan to continue and finish the game, but it's been a while, so it might take some time to get my clues together where I am. (it's the DOS version without voice acting) I give it 4 shot + jäger out of 5.
I somehow completely missed this game on its original release, despite being a huge adventure and P&C fan. I barely even knew it existed until the 2014 remake. I played that and loved it enormously. Excellent story, characters, locations and especially wonderful soundtrack. From what I gather the remake is fairly faithful - streamlining the interface and greatly improving the art without losing the feel of the original. That said, they did redo most (all?) of the voice acting, so it's certainly not identical. I plan to play the original version sometime so that I have experienced both.
I also played this game and well as you said I must be a dork cause I visited New Orleans as well. I found the game to be more than just a game (as you mentioned). It almost read like a book. A touch of history and a sprinkle of humor made it worth playing not once but three times to see if I missed anything and to hear some of the dialog again.
This is by far my favourite game of all time. Even today I listen to the soudtrack. I look foward for someone who answer "What can you tell me about voodoo murders?"
Of all the vocal talent in this game, the one I immediately recognized was Leah Remini. (I recognized the voice of Sergeant Frick from other stuff, but didn't know that voice was by Jim Cummings. )
WOW when I first played that so many years ago I had no idea of the acting talent behind it. This almost tempts me to pick it up again from GOG and check the anniversary edition. BTW Love the necklace!
Awesome game! And awesome review, PUR's quircky humour had me laughing out loud a few times :) For some reason I missed this one back in the day. So few years ago, I had the nice experience of getting sucked into an authentic 90s adventure for the first time. Instantly a favorite!
Oh Gabriel Knight. It's next on my list of adventure game series to play through. Unfortunately I just started Tex Murphy, and won't let myself skip Mean Streets, and older adventure games like that are a bit of a chore to get through when you've been spoiled by the Sam and Max's and Monkey Islands of the adventure game world. :^I
There is even a Murder She Wrote episode where Jessica faces voodoo. Alas I can not name the episode. I'll go stand in the corner until Frick says I can go.
1. Love the magnifying glass! 2. This and the beginning playthrough of The Colonel's Bequest both came out around Mardi Gras time. :-) Yes, thanks to these games, I pay attention to Mardi Gras. Used to visit the NOLA.com website and read the online version of the Times Picayune, too. Ah, good times.
This review convinced me to play the game, and I loved it... even though I had to resort to a walkthrough more than I'd like to admit (I groaned every time it told me I had to visit Jackson Park again). Altogether, though, probably one of the best adventure games I've ever played. Thanks, Roses! :)
I remember playing this one, new. What a great time for pc games that was! I loved all the point+click Sierra titles. Space Quest 4 was probably my favorite, though.
I knew this game sounded familiar. I really should get back to point and click adventure games. I didn't actually play enough of them when I was younger so I have a lot of catching up to do.
best adventure game ever. period. loved the funny lucas stuff. loved both comedy and fantasy from sierra. but as adventures go that took themselves seriously (like, really really seriously), this is one of the few who really got it right. music, voice acting (still in love with grace just for her voice), plot, classic sierra 34769384769348734 ways to die...10/10 all around.
I'm from louisiana Roses, i loved this game it got me into gaming when i was kid, i visited new orleans alot growing up, this game is amazing im with you on learning about voodoo thanks for the great review!!!!
I'm from New Orleans and I adore this game! It makes going out to parts of the city that I recognize as places in the game fun. Also the Laura Bow easteregg is really neat. It's a game I never get tired of. I haven't played the remake but the very prospect of someone besides Tim Curry voicing Gabriel seems blasphemous. It's also kinda sad that every Gabriel Knight sequel's graphics are underwhelming compared with the first's lovingly pixelated style. I will say though that the stories in 2 & 3 are actually both engaging, especially the 2nd game's even though it sadly wasn't Tim Curry as Gabriel.
You know, everyone talks about Mark Hamill and Tim Curry in this game, but hardly ever mentions Leah Remini as Grace. It was awesome to hear you specifically bring her up. Totally agree!
When I was a kid I never knew who the voice actors were...but I loved em..and a couple years ago when I rewatched a play thru Grace's voice stood out and I was like I KNOW that voice!!

doesn't matter

More Tim Curry, I vote an episode dedicated to Tim Curry.
I...actually like this idea a lot! Perhaps I shall!
+rachel karn An episode? Can't there be a Tim Curry month?
@@pushinguproses do Frankenstein: Through the Eyes of the Monster!!!
You can't do that! He's already gone to the one place not corrupted by capitalism!

@@pushinguproses Tim Curry! :)
HOLY CRAP! Tim Curry played the hero of a game!?
Now that you mention it, that IS a little odd. He usually plays a bad guy/villian type.
PushingUpRoses EXACTLY in fact its quite possibly his most famous trait as an actor.
PushingUpRoses I think I heard there's a remake that came out in 2014.
This game is just packed with famous voice actors. Mark Hamill is there too.
Truly a masterpiece. This game gave me a unhealthy obsession with voodoo, hoodoo, New Orleans & Jazz Baby!
The art style, voice acting and plot of this game just sucked me in. 2nd fav adventure game of all time

What is your favorite?
After so many years, perhaps it is a bit ridiculous to leave this comment, but while I was doing my own review I discovered something that I think you did not know, or at least you did not comment on in the review, and I would like to share:
Laura Bow and Gabriel Knight occur in the same continuity!
I would love to see an Xmen cartoon where Gambit was voiced by Tim Curry in this voice
"It's the land of voodoo, hoodoo and all kinda weird shit"
-Captain Ron
It has to be said, I love your Manny Calavera necklace!!!
Also, so jealous that you've been to New Orleans! I wanted to go since the first time I saw Interview With A Vampire when I was eight.
Thank you! I am loving that Manny pendant. I am tempted to wear it for every video, now.
@@pushinguproses Seconded on the Manny pendant love! (Grim Fandango is one of my favourite games of all time.
Tim Curry?
I didn't have a Clue :)
I see what you did there 🤣
My favourite game of all time. Excellent coverage. :D
Maybe not my absolute favorite... but it's probably the best technically.
Based on books I think.
The cutscenes with comic-esque panels lend credence to this idea too.
I played GK 1,2, and 3 they go down as my favorite adventure games, great review.
ANY J.B. Fletcher reference is welcome!
This may sound dumb, but I'm passing on the remake SOLELY due to a lack of Tim Curry.
I almost thought the same thing, but the remake is actually quite good even without him. If you're a GK fan, I definitely recommend it.
I can't help but feel Gabriel is some sort of weird non-mutant relative of Gambit.
You've sold me on this game. I've never been a fan of the Sierra games due to some titles having serious moon logic but this title seems so atmospheric and well produced, taking me back to when I was first introduced to Broken Sword.

The best part is still listening to Tim Curry try to do a Cajun accent around his English accent.

Well done. I really like your reviews and this may be one of your best.
1:58-2:09 Shout out to Murder She Wrote!
Awesome manny calavera necklace
This is by far my favourite game of all time. Even today I listen to the soudtrack. I look foward for someone who answer "What can you tell me about voodoo murders?"
Of all the vocal talent in this game, the one I immediately recognized was Leah Remini. (I recognized the voice of Sergeant Frick from other stuff, but didn't know that voice was by Jim Cummings. )
this is one of those rare gems from way back when i was a teen, that had spot on lip sync on the portraits
WOW when I first played that so many years ago I had no idea of the acting talent behind it. This almost tempts me to pick it up again from GOG and check the anniversary edition.
BTW Love the necklace!
Voodoo. Who do? You do.
Uhm...
I'll see myself out...
You remind me of the babe.
That zombie was pretty horrific, I could see myself leaving the computer in fear when I was younger, the look on it's face is the stuff of nightmares.
Awesome game! And awesome review, PUR's quircky humour had me laughing out loud a few times :) For some reason I missed this one back in the day. So few years ago, I had the nice experience of getting sucked into an authentic 90s adventure for the first time. Instantly a favorite!
So you're saying this Dr. John wasn't at the Right Place, at the Wrong time?
Oh Gabriel Knight. It's next on my list of adventure game series to play through. Unfortunately I just started Tex Murphy, and won't let myself skip Mean Streets, and older adventure games like that are a bit of a chore to get through when you've been spoiled by the Sam and Max's and Monkey Islands of the adventure game world. :^I
This and Discworld Noir are my top 2
favourite point and click adventures.
Playing this as a Dutch kid was weird, as Schattenjager means something entirely different in dutch: Treasure Hunter.
This review convinced me to play the game, and I loved it... even though I had to resort to a walkthrough more than I'd like to admit (I groaned every time it told me I had to visit Jackson Park again). Altogether, though, probably one of the best adventure games I've ever played. Thanks, Roses! :)
Jim Cummings as Officer Olfrid! Patron of the clan Battleborn
Jane Jensen is an asset to adventure gaming.
"My back hurts."
Mood.
I'm getting big Grimm energy from this game.
Also can we talk about that skull/mesh top? 💜
I'll be meeting Jim Cummings at the Lexington KY Comic Con. Stoked!
The day you give us your thoughts on Atlantis: The Lost Tales, will be the day I die happy.
I want this game re-mastered along with a lot of the other Sierra Adventure titles! Out of all of them though, I want this one the most!
A friend of mine and myself also went to New Orleans because of this game. I can't think of another game that has impacted me in that way.
