"Alexander pulls out his magic map!" "Alexander pulls out his magic map!" "Alexander pulls out his magic map!" "Where were you born, a barn? It's a pig's sty in here!"
3:10 The schlemiel and the schlimazel are actually tropes from European Jewish comedy. the schlemiel is the one who spills the soup, and the schlimazel is the one who gets the soup spilled on him. Basically, it's the pairing of a clumsy person and an unlucky person.
Regarding “Girl in the Tower,” it was a very cool and bold move for Sierra to try to get fans to get radio stations to play it. That was creative marketing at its best for 1992, and imagine the publicity for this game, Sierra, and adventure games in general if it had worked as hoped! The Top-40-style end credit song tradition began with “Beauty and the Beast” in 1991. (I really wish “The Little Mermaid” had had one too, but that was too early.) I think the only possible reason the radio station plan backfired is that it was maybe too far ahead of its time. And that’s not a criticism either. Bold creative moves are where history gets made.
Hell, i actually first heard of the song/game because of it getting limited airtime on a local station back in the day. So, at least personally, the marketing worked. X3
Also, Tony Jay was the voice of Captain Saladin and he was a legend kind of. He was a voice actor for Disney cartoons (2 major ones at that, hint hint, tease,) and was a well-known actor in film and television.
Having replayed all the King's Quest games recently, this one was still my favorite. I even played it twice because I got all the way to the castle before realizing that I'd screwed up the good path and wanted to get that golden ending. Great game, great cast, and Captain Saladin is the greatest character in the history of ever.
Shamir Shemozzle is doing a poor job of trying to kill Alexander because he can't disobey Alhazred's orders, but Alhazred left loopholes (ie, he's not watching) so Shamir isn't even bothering with trying to kill him.
I was so convinced that Jollo was the same guy who voiced Choose Goose in "Adventure Time"... but he's not... although he DID voice Moe on Adventure Time... so that's... something.
I love that Russi Taylor of The Simpsons voices a number of minor characters in this game. Her Lady Celeste voice is identical to her Sherri/Terri voice, and her Ghost Child voice is pretty similar to her Martin Prince! :)
PUR, i have to say, this is my fav video of yours. You seemed like you were having so much fun, the singing, the jokes, your anecdotes. And the way you wrote to Sierra and asked for help? Peak adorability!!!! 🥰
If i'm not mistaken, even if you do throw rotten tomato yourself, it's not technically a fail state yet, since you can still finish the game using the short path. as far as i remember, the short path doesn't require the use of any of the spells.
Psh. I don't think Chessboard Land looks that barren. It has two ruling queens, after all. Eh? Barren. BARON? No? *taps the mic* Hello? ...I'll see myself out.
It's almost impossible not to sing Girl in the Tower every time I hear it. Also the Black Widow in this game was one of my first video game crushes as a kid. Which explains a lot of my current brain problems, now that I think about it.
Dave Fennoy (the Pawnshop owner) was also the voice of the pirate whom Guybrush Threepwood had to trick in a card game to get a diamond. And, of course, voiced characters in Telltale's games - Lee Everett from *The Walking Dead (Season 1)*; Finch from *Tales from the Borderlands*; Bluebeard from *The Wolf Among Us*. HOW did *Don Messick* (Ali and the sense Gnomes) get missed by EVERYONE?! He voiced Scooby Doo, Scrappy Doo, Atom Ant, Booboo Bear, Hamton J. Pig (from Tiny Toon Adventures)... and THOUSANDS of other characters we've all heard. He's *THE biggest actor* on this game's cast list, but NOBODY mentions him.
+Mick For K-Six A side note about the Pawnshop owner - he was one of the most visited characters in the game, yet *had no name* until the KQ Companion gave him one. Sierra had some brain-damaged moments, even in their best games.
+Mick For K-Six Good call. I am glad people are bringing up more of the voice actors. Truth be told, I wanted to get across my own experience with the game and didn't want to focus on any one thing for too long including the voice acting, though clearly it's something people REALLY enjoy discussing. Just wanted to mention a small section, my favorite voices, and move on. Then people could discover more about the game if their interest was piqued enough to want to play it or look it up. And yeah, totally do recognize Dave Fennoy's voice from MI3 - it's actually almost the exact same voice. Love that game. Good insight! And yeah, Sierra had their moments. They aren't perfect by any means, but I love 'um anyway. Also, I would argue that Bill Ratner had a comparable amount of fame to Don Messick. He also has some amazing credits to his name and has been the movie trailer voice actor for a TON of huge films. :)
I looked up Bill Ratner's official site, IMDB, and a few other sites, but can't find more than 33 years of voices, and only about 46 roles listed. To put it in perspective: Don Messick, Daws Butler, and Mel Blanc were all comparable actors with 60+ years as the primary voice actors for Hannah-Barbera and Warner Bros. (Don and Daws tend to be mentioned together because of all their combined projects - Pixie, Dixie, and Mr. Jinks cartoons were completely voiced by those two, for example.) If you're looking for movie trailers and TV previews, look up Jim Cummings or Peter Cullen, and prepare to faint. XD
:) I like to support voice actors and their reputations as I can. :) Interesting fact: When Mel Blanc's wife was pregnant, he asked his bosses for a raise. The company couldn't afford it at the time, so they made a deal - there would be a "Characterizations" credit at the end of all of Mel's cartoons, which gave him more attention and work from other sources. That was their way of getting him more money to care for his family. That meant he was the first voice actor to get public credit for his work.
Funnily enough, my first time hearing "Girl in the Tower," WAS from radio play. One of my local stations, it turns out, was run by some guys who were already kinda into video games, and thought the idea of Sierra trying to get airtime was more charming than annoying. So the song would occasionally come up on rotation.
The main thing I remember about this game is when you get the genie "drunk" with the... it was a mint, I think? And he's trying his best to tell the Vizier about Alexander's "magic smap." His delivery always cracked me up as a kid. KQVI was also the first KQ to use CG characters! Both in the intro cutscene and, oddly, when Alexander's walking around in the dark with a lantern.
Fun fact - the GOG download of KQ6 includes all the files necessary to run the windows version. By default it's set to run the DOS version in DOSBox, but if you run it through ScummVM, you can get the full Windows version complete with updated portrait graphics! I, too, grew up on the windows version :)
+Uhmm Mohai SWEET. :D I thought it did but by the time i thought about it, I was already neck deep into the DOS capture. would love to play the Windows version again.
The graphics, voice acting, and story make up for some of the crazy moon logic in my opinion. GIRL IN THE SHOWER I'M PEEKING OUT PLEASE HAND ME THE SHAMPOO...
I have a sneaking suspicion that your channel's going to get a lot bigger very soon. These have been some really good videos lately, too! Now I want to play the hell out of all these computer games. XD
I NEVER got past the Cliffs back in '94 or '95 because the friend who gave me his copy of the game "forgot" to give me the manual! XD But a decade later I was able to use the internet to solve the puzzles properly.
I like that you chose to use the narrator's dialogue of tossing the head of iceberg lettuce into the boiling pond. I'll occasionally drop that line in a general chat in MMO's just to see if anyone recognizes where it's from. I'm enjoying your reviews of my favourite game series!
I am playing through them now and I would say that so far 3 is my favorite from the way it mixes mechanics and narrative. I actually was anxious as hell trying to make that stupid cat cookie thing while the wizard's timer ticked down. And in that game Alexander is such a sympathetic character. He's so kind to everyone despite being in such a bad situation. I actually felt emotions for a decades old computer game character lol.
The first PC game I played all the way through. This game, more than any other, hits me with a lightning strike of nostalgia. God damn it's so good. I still go back and play it once every couple years.
I remember watching my brother play this one when I was a kid. It was really interesting with all the puns and such. Can't wait for the next review, Roses! :)
I really love the voice acting in KQ6 especially the Narator from his descriptions of character emotions down to his corny jokes really had me hooked on this game. I was shocked to know back when i first played KQ6 and then the 2015 KQ game that most of the voice actors were professionals mostly know for Disney and the late Tony Jay, OMG you can listen to him forever. This is truely one of the best point n click adventure games for me though I still love Sam n Max HtR.
[Chris] I believe that the vocal rendition of Girl in the Tower plays during the ending credits and was redbook audio straight off the CD. So *technically* you could easily replace it with a PushingUpRoses cover...
I used to read the letters i wrote to my Unrequited love while listening to "girl in the tower". true story! that was such an entertaining review, roses
My favorite vocal performance was Tony Jay as Captain Saladin. He was fantastic in this. And I think there's a law about reviewing this game online that you have to sing Girl in the Tower... Also loved the reference to your Cedric video. That made me smile.
Why does everyone forget, that in the opening of the game, it is explained that Alexander and Cassima, have been corresponding via letters for months. It is only after the stop that Alexander feels that something is wrong in the Land of the Green Islands.
The opening of the game absolutely does NOT say this, lol. The only indication of this is in a book called the King's Quest Companion, specifically the 2nd Edition (I haven't seen every edition of it, but I know at least that it is in the 2nd (page 448, if you want to see for yourself), and that it's not in the 4th (which was the last edition published)), where the character who is the canonical author of the Guidebook to the Land of the Green Isles, Derek Karlavaegen, is written as having said "that Alexander and Cassima have communicated since their meeting [in Mordack's castle], but doesn't say how, or where, or when."
7:20 With regards to the difficulty of the puzzles, all of them are generally solved by paying close attention to everything that you come across, and by examining everything and talking with everyone you meet. Case and point, the swamp ooze puzzle you highlighted here. After you get yelled at by Stick-In-The-Mud for the first time, you can speak with Bump-On-A-Log to learn the history of the two. At one point in his dialogue, he says, "Just because I can't _reach_ anything he thinks he can throw gushy swamp matter at me and say whatever he likes! If only I could turn the tables on that heckler, he might learn some respect." This is a pretty obvious clue that you must give the tomato to Bump instead of throwing it yourself. Just about everything except the Isle of Copy-Protection is solved in this manner.
this is a game with a magical teleporting map, islands referencing fairy tales, dog-man hybrid soldiers, genies, a literally land of the dead, people with wings, living greek mythology...yet the whole 'love at first sight' thing is too much to swallow? really??
4:17... are those oyster beds... also dadgummit Roses, everytime you sing it makes me fall for you just a teeny bit more. (I appreciate a good set o' pipes)
I always thought that the zombies in the land of the dead are your crew from the opening when you're ship crashed. You never see them again and there is no way they could have escaped in a lifeboat with the water around the green isles being the way they are.
+leahcim They escape! At the end of the game, Valanice tells Alexander that his men arrived home safely and that she was worried when he wasn't with them.
I've been slowly watching older videos I missed on this channel, and I am glad I finally checked this out. Love the jokes and innuendo. I think I need to work a glory hole into a game at some point. Such a missed opportunity here.
This was the only King's Quest I had played, back in the day. I had a small collection of totally random computer games that mostly came to me from my Dad. This....was not the best game for a kid my age, at the time, but I DID make it to the Underworld! I feel like that ain't too bad, considering that I'm pretty sure I found every single death up to that point. It was one of those games I kept going back to, though, so by the time I got to the Underworld I was a little bit older and able to understand most of the puns and things that would allow me to make sensible decisions.
I've been waiting for you to review this one! Definitely my favorite King's Quest game. Truth be told, it was the first one I ever played. I didn't even have a computer at the time... But my neighbor did! He had only two games Stellar 7 and (DUNDUDUDUN!) KQ6. He let me borrow it around 20 years ago and I still have his guide book/copy protection. Yep, I was THAT GUY. Anyway, he didn't care much for the game so I don't think he cared. When I did finally got my own computer, this was one of the first games I picked up (from my neighbor, hehe) and as you would say, "Oh man!" I played the hell out of this one. I remember once I had gotten really close to the ending and I screwed up and got locked in the dungeon. Luckily, I had saved my game. As a stupid kid, I only kept one save at any given time and when I went to his load, I HIT SAVE!!! I cannot express the pure rage I felt and I honestly threw a full fledged tantrum. I remember running outside and crying. That's how much I cared about this game. I know it sounds silly, but I was a just a wee lad at the time. When I finally calmed down, I realized that I pretty much knew what to do and I started playing again. I immediately got over the anger when I booted up the game again and it was almost refreshing to be safe and sound on the Isle of the Crown. That's a true testament to this game's greatness. I still play it today. Damn, I should save these stories for my own reviews. Anyway, keep up the good work, Roses! Love your work and all that!
I've always thought of the island of the crown as being Spanish with Moorish influences. Also The island of the mists is Celtic, isle of the beast is French, isle of the sacred mountain is greek/Minoan, and the isle of wonder is Alice in wonderland.
Idk if I've commented on this before but holy crap I adore this game. I'll often say it's my second favorite game of all time but really it is probably tied for the first.
I also played this game as a kid and was stuck many a time but never thought to write out my problem and mail it to the Sierra hint team and wait for a USPS response. The fact that you did is incredible and in fact, commendable!
Jane Jensen... That nearly says all. Altough I also liked KQ 5. And YES I mean the CD version with the VOICEOVER and the town music. *duck away* And well the whole KQ series. I also have the "girl in the tower" CD soundtrack! :)
I don't get it. Did the radio stations refuse to play "Girl in the tower" even once? Didn't they have it? Or were you sarcastic about people wishing for it? LOL I agree about the narrator. He was Brilliant! Were his voice in any other games? The mintcrazy genie always cracks me up!
UA-cam suggested your channel to me today, so I spent the whole morning watching your KQ reviews and related videos. Then I went to the beach with my KQ Companion, which I loved in eighth grade and definitely used to beat all the games from the collection I found on sale at the mall that Christmas after obsessing over KQVI forever (and singing the theme song almost as often as the end credits songs from Disney movies). Have you ever read the spinoff novels? The Floating Castle, See No Weevil, and Kingdom of Sorrow. They’re pretty standard quest books, but I remember enjoying them. Thank you for giving each game their due!
I know this is an older video but I'm going back through some of Rose's older content and just wanted to say how I always appreciate it when she sings.
Man, Robby Benson is all over the place, never new he was in this game, and also didn't know he teaches at my University until there was a special screening of One on One in our cinema the day after The Chosen screening that ended with a Q&A with him and Jeremy Kagan. Neat stuff! I still haven't played any King's Quest games, or any Sierra point & clicks, and I call myself an adventure game fan. Keep up the great reviews!
KQ6 is one of those rare games I never get tired of hearing about. Even the odd scathing review can be a fun distraction. There's so much going on in the game that almost every person I talk to or hear from has a different experience playing it. Personally, I'll always love the catacombs. With its atmosphere, traps, and constant noises, it's a wonderfully well-designed cinematic moment.
+Calad Euka why jared!? why do you keep sending me to awesome girl's channels just for me to fall hopelessly in love... snfl... X'C first geek remix now this.... subscribed...
+Calad Euka My guess is because: Jared is a really nice person who respects me as a colleague, and wanted to do something to share my work. Even though my video has nothing to do with the review he linked me from, I think it's a really kind gesture for producers to showcase other producers work and not fall victim to the competitive nature of UA-cam, and it was especially nice because I hadn't expected anything. Though, I'm pretty sure you must have had some idea why that was akin to what I just said, right? ;)
@ 5:33, did this character speak the line "old lamps for new"? If so I remember seeing this game running on a computer at a Sears back then and for some reason it became a running joke between me and my brother because, i guess, of how silly it sounded (we had a lot of weird inside jokes like that).
Nice singing. :) I grew up on the Windows version as well, and I had the same reaction of "...wut?" when I fired up the DOS version in DOSBox at one point. Fortunately, I was able to get Windows 3.1 to run in DOSBox; I should find out if my old CD will install from it! (addendum...) ...or not. I no longer appear to have it. :( That's not something I would just throw away, maybe it's buried in a box.
I know not from where or when I ordered it, but I own "The Sierra Soundtrack Collection" and I absolutely love it! Especially the Girl in the Tower song. Might I also add a game request? Could you possibly do a review on the game INCA? BTW, I also own the soundtrack cd for this game as well. I highly recommend the song "Inca People", its tops! I bought Inca II in the late 90's, but you know what??? I've NEVER even opened it yet. It's still in its CompUSA (or maybe Electronics Boutique?) packaging! Someday I might play it. :D
Was on a ProJared video, and he linked to this one. I'd already seen the name several times during the past few years, and I finally decided to check this channel. Nicey nice, I trust the rest of your videos are just as good (a bit lazy to check right now), subscribeddd.
I still have all 9 floppy disks from when I first got it as a kid. I'm glad I got to experience this game with the voices in my head, not these voice actors
I'm glad I wasn't scared off by the thumbnail, this was fun!
...but seriously that thumbnail
+Lazy Game Reviews I don't know what you mean. That thumbnail is a work of fine art. Classic.
It's a classic in the same way that "Girl in the Tower" is a classic.
@Seth Rowling I think your virginity is showing Seth.
@Seth Rowling little sexist shit.
Hmmm, I guess Seth got deleted or deleted himself. A phrase like, your vitginity is showing, caught my interest. LOL!
I actually called a bunch of radio stations and requested "Girl in the Tower" back when the game was new. I'm so, so ashamed
Me and my brother did too. The DJ laughed at us and told us "I guess the girl has left the tower." Womp womp
Omg I did too ❤

Also loved the reference to your Cedric video. That made me smile.
I remember a lot of switching items at the pawn shop. Also, was disappointed the Lovecraft reference never had a pay off.
That's it, I'm calling my radio station and demanding they play Girl in the Tower.
I'm feeling saucy. Tomato sauce, to be specific.
+LittleMikey your avatar is majestic
Russell Teapot Thank you kindly.
Whose dad is this
Why does everyone forget, that in the opening of the game, it is explained that Alexander and Cassima, have been corresponding via letters for months.
You get so much (platonic) love from me for all your creative efforts.

With regards to the difficulty of the puzzles, all of them are generally solved by paying close attention to everything that you come across, and by examining everything and talking with everyone you meet.
When I was a kid I drew my own magic map on construction paper and used to pretend I could teleport. Yeah, I was a cool kid.
An absolute favourite of mine from my childhood next to Chrono Trigger. Thank you for reviewing it!! :)
2:30 Fully expected the Lord of Swamp Castle to jump in when you said that it makes you want to sing.

Wow, I never knew they used real life actors to animated 2D games like this!
I tried so hard not to laugh when you started singing Girl in the Tower but it made my day so I had no choice.
I stay play that song while driving.
The best in all King's Quest series. Love it so much.
I'm subbed to a lot of gaming channels, but I completely missed you, glad I found you when I did, YT needs more girl game reviewers
Hee! My sister and I got the King's Quest Collection way back when and went through all the games from start to finish. Good times. :)
If Weird Al wanted to create a parody, would it be called "Girl in the Shower"?
I laughed really hard at the Cedric/Mordack throwback.
Damn, Roses.....you're the best. I LOVED this game back in the day. You've got me feeling all nostalgic and whatnot. Cheers.
Idk if I've commented on this before but holy crap I adore this game.
I'll often say it's my second favorite game of all time but really it is probably tied for the first.
Such a fine singing voice deserves a reward. If the crack is too high the barrel must be brought near.
I also love feeding mint to the genie at every possible chance 😖
I also played this game as a kid and was stuck many a time but never thought to write out my problem and mail it to the Sierra hint team and wait for a USPS response. The fact that you did is incredible and in fact, commendable!
Jane Jensen... That nearly says all. Altough I also liked KQ 5. And YES I mean the CD version with the VOICEOVER and the town music. *duck away* And well the whole KQ series.
I also have the "girl in the tower" CD soundtrack! :)
Girl in the Towerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!! ahhhh the memories; great recap and singing Rose!
2:54 that's one way of explaining his thought process
I'd be introduced to hear your two cents on the "Simon the sorcerer" games
*interested
GIRL IN THE TOOOOWWWWEEEERRR!! Im in a singing mood now...thanks PushingUpRoses , as a side note, you look amazing in this video!!
No mention of Tony Jay in the voice cast? 4 shame.
Excellent review tho. One of my all time favs.
I hate that it took me so long to find your videos. Thank you for what you do
I challenge you all to find anything more painfully 90s than "Girl in the Tower". It's glorious.
techmage89
Barney the Dinosaur. boom. beat your challenge.
I don't get it. Did the radio stations refuse to play "Girl in the tower" even once? Didn't they have it? Or were you sarcastic about people wishing for it? LOL
I agree about the narrator.
Man, that 90s Roberta Williams hair is massive
+Crocmaster McGeezax Oh yeah, it was early 90s goodness. There were other clips to use but I had to use that one strictly due to the hair.
Easily without hesitation one of the greatest game ever made.
ProJared sent me here
+jacobacon and ihave no idea why. why not the original source for the game ProJared used to send us here? ì-ì
Though, I'm pretty sure you must have had some idea why that was akin to what I just said, right? ;)
This comment has not aged well.
@@DannyBellTheAuthor was just about to say that
it's a shame :/
Oh god, I remember being stuck by the stick in the mud, ooze, puzzle forever.
Also 9 disks? I thought my copy was 15... whatever.
I've been waiting for this review. One of my favorite games of all time. Great job Roses!
@ 5:33, did this character speak the line "old lamps for new"? If so I remember seeing this game running on a computer at a Sears back then and for some reason it became a running joke between me and my brother because, i guess, of how silly it sounded (we had a lot of weird inside jokes like that).
+Phunqsauce Yep, that's the one. Voiced by Tony Jay, to boot.
thanks! I knew it looked very familiar!
I just noticed from that clip of KQV where Alexander hits on Cassima that apparently Graham gave Alexander some work out lessons.
Roses with the hand clinching 80's power ballad singing. Loved It!
I'm glad I got to experience this game with the voices in my head, not these voice actors
your love for the song sold me and "I couldn't wish you away."
