I believe her. Seems like Margaret caught a wind of wanting to cast an actress for her and heard one person she knew was one of the choices. That 'smoking' part certainly came from the late princess herself.

helena is such a genuinely talented woman. her deeper look into her job makes her such an amazing actress at what she does. not only with her voice but her body she works in such an artistic light. like the smoking bit where if you position it correctly or perhaps use it a certain way it can show an emotion you cannot speak aloud since like she said you are a royal, so you can’t really talk much. she did amazing in the crown and really nice to hear this then go back and rewatch the series too.

A Princess Margaret Story. On an R.A.N ship back in the 70's PrM was being taken to her next event across the Bight. The Officers had just finished Dinner (Tea for Brits) and they were having Tea/Coffee after. Of course they had to wait until Pr M went first. So her being aware of this winked at the Stewards as if to say watch this. So instead of picking up her cup in the usual manner she drank her Tea like Soup using her Teaspoon and the Lemmings all Followed.
