How to Deep CLEAN Your Pop Up Camper Canvas & Vinyl (Inside & Out) in Under 10 Minutes!
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 кві 2021
- This video details how to clean your pop up camper “canvas” both inside and out. This video details the distinction between both the canvas material and the vinyl material colloquially referred to as a pop up camper canvas. With the distinction made there are differences with regard to cleaning each material. Vinyl is cleaned utilizing a combination of diluted degreaser along with magic eraser sponges. Vinyl is then rejuvenated and protected utilizing a product called Protect All. This same method can also be utilized for cleaning the vinyl pop up camper windows. With regard to canvas material, if called for, a mold and mildew remover can be utilized to remove the former and later in addition to numerous other stains. However, if a mold and mildew remover is utilized on canvas, it strips the waterproofing and therefore a waterproofing agent should be utilized following usage. In contrast, if mold and mildew remover is utilized on the inside of vinyl, a waterproofing agent should not need to be utilized as vinyl is inherently waterproof.

I can now confirm; Star Brite is amazing. Removed some serious dark brown stains from my pop up canvas. I can't believe how good that stuff actually works. Thank you, very much for the heads up.
Just got a pop up and this is the video I was looking for and needed. Thank you.
Thank you for this step by step tutorial. I had no idea how to clean the canvas or vinyl.
This was amazing, thankyou so much for sharing this with us.
Thank you!! This has been a mystery to me for a long time. Going to get cleaning this evening!
Great Video. I've watched a few but I subscribed because of the quality of this particular one.
Thanks for the video. We just bought our second pop up and want to do a big exterior clean and waterproofing! I love seeing what other people are using. 👍🏼
I have learned so much from all of your pop up camper videos. I own a Forest River Flagstaff 228bhse, but so similar in almost every way. Again, thank you and I’m always looking forward to new videos,
I need you to come to my house and help me with ALL the popup tune-ups we need! *grin*
Thanks for the great tips as always!
Thanks for the tips! You guys are awesome keep up the good work!
This was the perfect video for my needs. Thank you!
me and my man are watching alot of your vids , subbed ,we just got our pop up camper and are very excited to use it.
Dear Mr. It’s Poppin,
Thanks for all your well produced and informative videos. We have just purchased a new-to-us 2009 Jayco popup. Using many of your videos as a guide as well as motivation - I’m transforming a dingy dull old camper into something to be proud of…. Next week, maiden voyage!
Very nice. The pop up is coming out of the garage today. It’s an older palomino with all vinyl so was wondering what to use. Thanks I enjoy all your videos. You have taught me a lot about our pop up. Thanks
Loved the cleaning advice. Just finished detailing our 2006 starcraft bought in fall of 2019. Just in time for pandemic camping in 2020.It shined up like a new penny! I used spray nine degreaser, starbrite mildew cleaner and Magic Boss vinyl and awning protector. I will waterproof the canvas windows in the spring. Watched many utubes and this was the best ..
your videos are so helpful man! thanks so much.
Thank you this is great just bought our first pop up a day ago and want to give it a good cleaning
Thank you. Just bought my first and needs deep cleaning. Wish me good luck everyone!
I am now in your shoes and so excited to get started. I have to wait till it warms up a bit. Hopefully in a few weeks.
Awesome. Going to do this this week!
Thanks. We got our pup in May. It's time to clean it to put away for the season.
Very helpful information. Thank you, very much!
Perfect timing. We just bought our pop up this weekend and this is the first project we need to tackle.
Congrats! What make/model did you pick up?
Thanks for your video and time! I had to clean mold off the entire inside/outside of my newly bought (used) Jayco. The inside was covered with mold. The rest of the Jayco is like brand new. The two tables were like brand new but both were warped so bad they are unusable. I think the previous owner must have only used their new Popup trailer a couple times and then stored it outside for a few winters. Got it at an auction for $400.00. It is complete like just off the showroom floor. So the moral of this story is to store a Popup in some kind of enclosed, dry building in the winter if you live in the PNW. Or use and service a lot of those moisture absorbent pillows. It was a major pain in the ^%$^%$& to get the mold off inside. I store it inside my barn and next winter will be the first test to see how it does in there.
we just spent all day last Saturday deep cleaning and treating the canvas on our 2009 Coleman Westlake. It look a lot of elbow grease but man does it make the popup look sharp.
Going to try this! We don't have a pop up but it should work on our Hybrid Trailer bunks.
Have been using the products you use for several years with good results. I really like Protect All it works well on all intended applications. My 2003 Fleetwood Cheyenne still looks close to new and I will do what I can to keep it this way. Awesome video that will no doubt benefit others.
Thanks!
Thanks for the video. We just joined the pop up community with our recent purchase of a 98 Dutchman! It’s going to need a lot of tlc but we love it!
Welcome!
wow! thank you for this cleaning overview!! 🙏 my tip back to you is the generic name for a magic eraser... melamine foam - available on Amazon in bulk for cheap!! 👍😉
So so helpful thank you so much!
Recently used Concrobrium Duo Blast cleaner from Home Depot to clean the vinyl. With some light brushing very effective.
Fantastic information! We are restoring a 1992 Coleman Grandview. I have all of the 'furniture' out and will be rebuilding most of it. I will be referencing this video for my canvas cleaning process. My Amazon cart is full. Just subscribed as well. Can't wait to see the other helpful videos.
We appreciate the sub!
Thank you for all that information 🎉 live it
Great info and perfect timing. Watched your previous reno videos on this topic and was getting ready to clean our vinyl/canvas (including a couple of minor mildew spots) in the next couple of weeks. This more specific/detailed run through is VERY helpful. Thanks!
Thanks!
Very helpful. Thank you
Thank you 😊 just gifted a pop up and super excited to get it cleaned up and a mainly up cycled makeover 😀
What make/model?
@@ItsPoppin Coleman Bayside. It’s much more spacious than I expected!
Just a note to say you've helped a newb out quite a bit.
I can't thank you all enough for your videos!!! My husband and I just bought a 1996 Palomino! Although I grew up pop up camping and we've been planning to buy a pop-up for a while, we happen to just stumble upon this camper and we were a little unprepared for it. I'm not sure if I'm more excited or nervous for this project!! Haha
We just bought a pop up and I feel the same :)
Thank you for another great vid. We are planning to clean ours this weekend, weather permitting. A friend of ours stated that they use a product that is used for clear vinyl windows on convertible cars. He stated that it is really useful if clear vinyl is scratched or clouded. Useful info as always. We look forward to your next vid. See you out there.
Thanks, let is know what the product is if you find out.
Bestop P/N 1121300 Vinyl Window Cleaner, available from Amazon. Hope this helps.
I literally pressure washed mine. Lol I zipped everything up. Lower pressure. I put plastic on everything in side. Worked well. Nothing soaked or ruined by water. Took 15min outside. And 10 minutes inside. This was with my fleetwood williamsburg. When dries. I sprayed it down really heavy with waterproofing spray. Took 5 large cans of military grade tent waterproofing. It's been 6 years and haven't needed to do anything but blow of dust before closing it up.
Which waterproofing spray did you use?
@DukeSamala I use heavy duty silicone waterproofing spray by sofsole and instant water proofing spray by Revivex. They both are excellent. Both work the same but I go for the silicone one because we camp a lot in rainy seasons and it's helps keep the frabic soft to avoid cracking
Hello friend,
I cleaned mines exactly how you said and I used exactly what you said to use and I just want to let you know that it worked out amazingly, they look brand new.
Thank you so much
Awesome!
@@ItsPoppin thanks again, looking forward to other videos.
Thanks for the info - we need to see the waterproofing after using the mildew remover! Does it matter if you only use it on the inside? How much to apply etc. Seeing it done is essential!
Hi, can you do a video on cleaning up and fixing the propane mount and hoses. I got a new plate for my tanks and I’m going over different ideas on mounting it. Not many videos on that
Your videos are so informative. Ty. For that. My question for you, I cleaned my canvas yesterday and as I cleaned it the binding around the edges of the bunk ends just crumbled. I don't have any leaks there but I want to be sure I don't get any. What would you use to go over them? I'm thinking of using the clear waterproof gorilla tape but looking for any kind of direction. My camper is a 96 and I'm learning as I go. I would like to get another year or so out of the canvas/vinyl if possible. Thank you.
thanks for the videos, nicely done. would you recommend only re-waterproofing the outside of the canvas only, or waterproof spray both side?
The curtains inside the camper are so cute, where could I find something like that? Also, after cleaning should it be left open for a certain amount of time to dry fully or air out?
Great tips! Only thing I would caution against is using a magic eraser on the vinyl windows, you risk making them hazy over time as a magic eraser is basically sandpaper.
Just bought. 2002 Jayco Eagle 10SG. Its in great shape but can use an overall clean and detail. I noticed the outside was caulked around all seams. Its still sticky. Maybe previous owners used a low quality household type.
We use Gekko bunk end covers . They are waterproof and insulated to help protect expensive canvass and vinyl .
Love love live your videos! Quick question: after cleaning like your video instructs, should I worry about the exterior seams on bunk end vynil? I re-waterproofed my true canvas side bunk windows, but am curious if the exterior seams of vynil need care. Thanks!!! You guys rock!
Thanks for the love! I wouldn't worry about the seams unless they are leaking and you determine water is actually coming in through the seams. If they are leaking, you can purchase a water based seam sealer to shore that up.
Hey Poppin' Family! new to the channel and new to the pop up life after being avid back packers. We bought a 2002 Rockwood Freedom, and the interior of the roof on our bunk ends has quite a bad stain from the roof vent being against it in the closed position. It appears that the previous owner has tried to clean it, and there are little "fluff balls" on the fabric, like tuffed up material. What is a good way to remove these safely? Razor? Also, the stains seem to be IN the fibers of the material. Soft fabric on the inside and vinyl on the outside. Should I try an activated Hydogen peroxide first? And do i need to use Microfibre cloths to prevent that "balling" up of the soft side?
Any tips would help
Have you try using little green proheat portable on canvas material
If your cleaning vinyl with mold and mildew cleaner on seams won't you need to add waterproofing on threading? Just curious. Love your videos
Thank you for this! We just bought our first pop up... a 1988 Coleman Columbia. It’s in decent shape but smells of mouse urine really bad and has staining on the canvas. What do you suggest for removing the odor from that and disinfecting the mattress and cushions. They are in fantastic shape except the smell and we want to keep the original look
Definatley try the mold and mildew remover for the canvas. As far as the mattress and cushions, are the covers removable? If so you may be able to wash them in the washer. There are also some tricks for cleaning the foam of the cushions/mattresses themselves, but we've never done that - Google may be your best bet for that.
I know, I know - cleaning your canvas will definitely take more time than 10 minutes, but at least this video won't! 😀
For more inspiration, check out our previous canvas cleaning video: ua-cam.com/video/AK-cmQgGXJY/v-deo.html
I call click bait lol. first time pop up owners, love the great info ty
Steve Wallis of Camping with Steve uses "Step 2" to refer to his beer break.... Just sayin'.
How long does it take to air out all the chemicals smell form the camper? It’s a very powerful smell after using it all over out canvas. We had a big job as the previous owners closed up the pop up before letting it dry out from the rain.
Pop up newbie here - so appreciative of your channel! Hoping for some clarification, is vinyl coated canvas the same as vinyl? The inside of our recently purchased 2003 Rockwood feels like canvas but the outside is more vinyl feeling... how do I treat? Protectall like for the vinyl or waterproofing like for the canvas? Would love any and all feedback!
Treat it like vinyl
To reapply waterproofing, do you apply it on the outside? I am cleaning the mold stains from the inside.
I have a really bad bad dark water stain on my canvas. I'm on my second application of the mildew remover. It worked great for the smaller stains but this one "main stain" is not coming out.
I would love to know if you can machine wash the curtains in washing machine?
Is there a way to verify if it’s canvas vs vinyl etc? We have a 2002 Coleman Cottonwood and I’m nervous to start to clean but not understand which part to clean what with!
Would you suggest using white vinegar?
Can I use Starbright on the inside of the pop outs if it’s the fuzzy stuff inside?
Would it hurt to use starbright waterproof on all canvas and vinyl?
Have you ever used a seam sealer on the bunk ends? We cleaned and then weather proof sprayed but I am having a bit of leaking at the seams.
No, not on the bunk ends, but that's probably not a bad idea to give it a try.
We've just had a lot of rain and the vinyl on our pop up is wet on the inside. Should we apply a waterproofing product. I had applied last fall a uv protectant but obviously something's gone wrong. I will definitely have to waterproof the canvas. I cleaned the vinyl with a decreasing product. I never though vinyl would get wet like the canvas. Any thoughts.
My initial thought is that it’s actually condensation. If you’re cooking, running hot water, showering, or even existing in your pop up and it’s sealed up tight against the rain, you’ll run into condensation. There’s a few ways to combat it. If you have an A/C that will help. Otherwise cracking a window or vent along with fans and/or water absorbers will help. The name brand is damprid but you can buy cheap ones from Dollar Tree.
This question is really dumb, but how the heck do you clean the inside materials on the bunk ends without getting the wood on the bed wet?
Awesome. Can I call you and pay you to answer questions? I have zip in windows and don’t know how to clean the canvas behind them
No - lol - but feel free to email. Pictures and year/make/model always help!
hi! SOS! i used “Miracle Mist” and it worked SO well on the mold and mildew, but im afraid it has left yellow water stains all throughout the inside of my pop up camper :(
how do i fix this!!!! i read online a natural enzyme water stain remover might work?? im wondering if you have any solutions that you swear by so i can save myself from possibly wasting time haha- thank you!
Not sure about the natural enzyme remover as we don't have any experience with it. With that being said, in our first pop up - a 1998 jayco heritage cascade, the canvas had bad mildew and mold stains when we bought it. We used the mold and mildew remover as well, which helped alot, however, it left an almost pink colored spot behind. We didn't find anything to completely remove it and just lived with it.
I just tried starbrite waterproofing on canvas of my popup camper I find the smell extremely strong does it eventually go away? And which way do you put it on from the inside of the camper with the bunk ends zipped down or by the outside?
Yes, it goes away - it just needs to air out for a while.
I prefer to apply inside with the bunk ends zipped down so the screen isn’t in the way. Definitely remove the mattresses to prevent any waterproofing from getting on them.
Is there anything I should use that is more gentle in the canvas besides the start brite? I’m worried to use that in case of the waterproofing issue.
Woolite or dawn dish soap diluted with water are a good place to start.
What's your recommendation on in between deep cleans? Soap and water? We've done one trip so far in our new popup and notice I could just wipe a lot of the debree with a clean towel but noticed birds like to poop on our camper lol.
Woolite and water or dawn dish soap and water are good "mild" cleaning agents that are good for in-between deep cleans.
@@ItsPoppin awesome thanks! I figured that. Was going to go with the dawn soap tomorrow to clean some of that stuff off. Thanks again!
Finding this three years too late but quick question on my pop-up there is Greece from the moving components. Mike pop-up is all canvas, an older one. Am I able to use the diluted degreaser on this?
Ouch, sorry about the typos
So if light shows thru it is canvas? Which is thicker, canvas or vinyl? I get these confused. Also what is best material to use to cover holes in canvas or vinyl? Maybe do a video on this? Thanks.
Vinyl is thicker. Keep in mind that some canvas windows have a clear vinyl window behind them so it's not always the case that canvas is lighter. You just have to look at the material itself. And we will do a video on patching, vinyl, canvas, and screens.
@@ItsPoppin thank you
I have a forest river and can't get the door to latch properly
Do I water proof interior and exterior of pop up tent I have vinyl on outside
Only the canvas - not the vinyl. I would prioritize using the waterproofing spray on the exterior first. It may not hurt to hit it front the inside if you have any leftover.
I've watched all your videos and some several times because I can't seem to find the one where you taped up your Awning bag. Could you direct me to that one? Also what did you use to clean your awning material. Mine is gunked up with 1,000 year old dirt.
I don't actually believe we filmed that. We used a white duct tape and layered it on like shingles, from bottom to top. We use camco awning cleaner.
@@ItsPoppin I remember the white duct tape but thought you had put some sort of film or sealer over the tape. I don't think it showed all of it but there was a quick section on it. And I've been forever trying to find that video it was in.
Promise it was just duct tape lol.
@@ItsPoppin lol okay thank you.
Nevermind, you were absolutely right. Here is the video, we we briefly showed it - ua-cam.com/video/6DPZGa-7PoY/v-deo.html
But how do you use the molded remover on the canvas? How do you extract it from the material afterward?
Follow the direction on the back of the bottle and wipe it off with a damp towel.
What is the best material to apply to canvas after cleaning and drying, to waterproof the material? If not the entire canvas surface, maybe the seams.
We use starbrite waterproofing spray.
oops! I should have watched to the end! You gave me my answer!
So what if my interior is cloth?
Literally watch every single one of your videos on 1.75x speed. You talk SO INFURIATINGLY SLOW while saying such SUPER AMAZING INFORMATION
I want to buy a pop up so bad, new to camping scared to pull the trigger on an inexpensive unit
I totally feel you! My boyfriend and I have been wanting to try it out also too see if we would really like tiny home living. We went in my friends pop up for the first time since they purchased it last year and the weekend after I just happened to start looking myself and we happened to stumble across a 1986 starcraft starblazer that’s only had 2 owners previous to us and we got it for $900 in honestly amazing condition for the year! It definitely needs a bit of work but that’s also something I was looking for was something to restore the older school style because it’s just what both my boyfriend and I really love. I hope you find your meant to be pop up soon and can enjoy your own little space to take with you on adventure! :)
Can you spray the inside of vinyl with a waterproofer? Or does the vinyl treatment work good enough. Our vinyl allows water beeds to form on the inside, and we’re having a hard time figuring out how to prevent this.
Is it condensation or is it rain water entering at the seams of the vinyl? Vinyl is inherently waterproof and doesn’t need waterproofing applied.
@@ItsPoppin looks like condensation build up, but it’s definitely vinyl. Oh well, we’ll figure it out. Thank for the response
Can you pressure wash the outside if it is really, really dirty?
I did. No problems. I did cover everything inside with plastic
I feel your lovely cleaning person should be wearing gloves..chemicals go through skin. Nice informative video thanks
Is the vinyl glossy and the canvas fabric like?
Do you have a video for water proofing canvas after you had to use this starbrite cleaner?
Yes and no. We’ve had good luck with starbrite waterproofing spray. Depending on how much canvas you have, you may have to buy more or less spray. Just saturate the canvas, watch for overspray and you’ll be good to go. You may find removing your mattress is helpful to not get water proofing spray on it.
@@ItsPoppin Okay so I believe most of my inside is canvas because it’s “fuzzy” and not shiny smooth. Does that sound right?
I have black spots everywhere on that canvas that I wanna use the mildew remover on like in your video- but you said then we need to waterproof it afterwards right? So I should saturate the canvas with starbrite waterproofer and then allow to dry? “Overspray” meaning accidentally getting on other stuff?
Yep, you got it.
@@ItsPoppin Great. And vinyl shouldn’t need waterproofed because it is waterproof by nature.
@@ItsPoppin Okay so my mom brought up a good point. She asked if I waterproof the canvas that is opposite to vinyl on the outside. For example- windows are not covered by vinyl on outside so they need water proofed. But what about the roof of the bed area that has vinyl on the outside?
She is wondering how that could possibly dry cause it would be moisture trapped between the canvas and vinyl.
Also for saturating the canvas covering the screened windows - do I saturate it from the inside out or outside in?
Hi! We tried spot cleaning the canvas windows on the bunks with the Starbrite cleaner. It did a great job removing the mildew but we can now see the sections we cleaned have a yellow tint. The canvas is normally an off white so it's quite noticeable. Wondering if you've run in to this or can recommend anything that might remove it?
I have cleaned my pop up on the outside from the inside it add a yellow tint on it before i cleaned it once cleaned it was off white more likely its from old waterproofing that turned yellow with time i washed mine with spray nine witch degrease and remove the waterproofing and did come out great you'll need to reapply a protection for vinyl if vinyl canvas then water proof it try a small spot where you cleaned the inside first and c if it made a difference before you do the hole pop up
Did you put the water proofing on inside or outside of the materials or both?
Hello? Are you still actively camping and making videos?
Can or should you use a water hose or pressure washer on the canvas exterior?
I would forgo the pressure washer. I'm sure you could get away with a water hose.
@@ItsPoppin that's kinda what I was leaning toward. Eventually though the pressure washer is electric and not that powerful. Thanks
Protect all is a man made synthetic product. In the long run, it will dry out the vinyl. I use platasizers only.
.
What product?
I use citrus powder that I found on ebay.
Isn’t the mildew remover just sodium hydrochloride? The same thing as bleach? I recently bought a gallon of “miracle mist mildew cleaner”, for $18 at Walmart. Once I started using it it smelled exactly like bleach and the ingredients said “contains sodium hydrochloride”. I think I paid for a bottle of bleach for nine times what it should’ve cost.
Do you have a favorite popup brand?
Amazing when you think to yourself They are not that bad lol till you see how bad they really were lol
Melamine sponges on Amazon you can get 100 for $10
Good call!
Ok I’ve watched all your videos now and you never mention you or your wife’s name, lol...Just curious to what they are??
Thanks for watching all the videos! I guess you will just have to keep watching to find out!
@@ItsPoppin lol fair enough! I look forward to it!😁
You made it seem as if your cleaning the canvas but then kept referring to the vinyl. So this sort of just confused me even more.
That'll take way more than 10 minutes and you said less than 10 minutes......... J/k 😂
I'm taking posession of a 1987 popup. I would like to know if there are products that you recommend to preserve/treat vinyl to keep it from drying and cracking.
Historically, we used protect all, however its a bit harder to find these days. We've been trying out some products from chemical guys, one of which was VRP and it worked well.
