Slowly, my Toyota Supra started to have an increasing number of intermittent starting and engine shutting-off issues. I would say, looking back, the problem started about a year ago.
But it was within the past three months that, every morning I would get in the car, it would just crank but not fire up. I initially thought it was the fuel pump system and since at the time I did not know that Toyotas do not prime on "accessory" but rather when the engine is turning over, I started to look into the way the car's fuel system worked.
The odd factor was that it would only do it when left overnight. After it started for the day, it had no issues.
So that went on for a while and then here recently, I would take the car for a drive and it would just shut off out of nowhere, which was scary since it could happen at any speed.
With the help of TSRM and the forums, I troubleshot pretty much everything. Using my DMM I checked wires, relays, and sensors. I replaced the common components that do cause the issues I stated above, and those are the crank position sensor and the two camshaft position sensors. I also checked the crank position sensor reluctor.
It was only when I was about to give up that I saw a post about the ECU and decided to give it a shot and see if mine was bad. And it was. Case closed.

Putting my ecu to the local washing machine repair guy. He has been fixing electronics since the late 80's. I might manage myself but....
Hope you get on fine fella 👍

running into the same symptoms and josh also commented on my post in supra fb group to check my ECU. sure enough i found leaking capacitors. i wish i came across this video sooner but i kept searching for fuel posts because im thinking the symptoms are no fuel to motor. most likely going to send my ecu to Josh for repair and hopefully it puts my baby back on the road.

My car has a Flux-capacitor issue that I can’t seem to find parts for. I’ve tried eBay and Marketplace but still no luck. Any ideas?
Seriously a fine video with good information on electrical gremlins which sometime are like a needle in the hay stack.

I bet NorthridgeFix would be able to swap these out and make an internet flick about it using his fancy super mega microtelescope.

I would also like to add I just had an issue with a current build “2jzgte” S14. I opened up the ecu because it’s not starting and the blown cap feeds to the pin on the ecu that comes from the crank sensor. Perhaps a grounded/break in the wire blew this cap? I know most of them will eventually go bad anyway. But check with one failed and see what components they are connected too before you replace them all?

I’ll with you. I wonder if the ECU schematic is out there. I’m curious as well. Though I can confidently say my Supra shifts better with swapped ecu.

You purchased a ecu replacement from eBay for your Supra, was the ecu oem or aftermarket ? And do you recall the “ecu seller” name? And can you relate the “capacitor kit” you purchased from eBay as well. I’m having similar & other “random” weird issues w/ my 93 MKIV Supra and cant pinpoint exact cause. Most likely ecu is causing these random issues. . I’ve owned my Supra for 25 yrs so replacing or repairing the ecu is needed. .i will also contact relentless motor sports as well.

Hello, I bought a used OEM Toyota ECU for my Supra. I made sure it was the same model and year. The model number is stamped outside in bold lettering. I bought the capacitors from a reputable electronic store and I am confident ANY experienced soldering technician can accomplish the job. I am having a local shop that repairs phones do it for me for 70 bucks. The most important factor is getting the proper parts.
