    Slowly, my Toyota Supra started to have an increasing number of intermittent starting and engine shutting-off issues. I would say, looking back, the problem started about a year ago.
    But it was within the past three months that, every morning I would get in the car, it would just crank but not fire up. I initially thought it was the fuel pump system and since at the time I did not know that Toyotas do not prime on "accessory" but rather when the engine is turning over, I started to look into the way the car's fuel system worked.
    The odd factor was that it would only do it when left overnight. After it started for the day, it had no issues.
    So that went on for a while and then here recently, I would take the car for a drive, and it would just shut off out of nowhere, which was scary since it could happen at any speed.
    With the help of TSRM and the forums, I troubleshot pretty much everything. Using my DMM I checked wires, relays, and sensors. I replaced the common components that do cause the issues I stated above, and those are the crank position sensor and the two camshaft position sensors. I also checked the crank position sensor reluctor.
    It was only when I was about to give up that I saw a post about the ECU and decided to give it a shot and see if mine was bad. And it was. Case closed.

    Just fixed my 94 Lexus with an old capacitor out of an old stereo i had sitting around. Sure enough it was a leaking capacitor in the ECU that was tripping my check engine light. I replaced the speed sensors a couple times and finally pulled the ECU and looked inside, and sure enough it was a leaking capacitor.

    Leaking capacitors are the worst - all that capacitor juice all over the place! ;-)

    what capacitors did you use? I have a 1JZ vvti and in my case I believe it;s the throttle computer

      I got my caps from eBay. They sell them as a kit. But you can pick up some good ones from some website called digikey something.

    now here is my story
    i drive a 2007 Toyota Mark x its has the 4GR engine this Engine is similar OR almost Similar to the engine in Lexus is250,
    many years ago i developed a minor problem with transmission Which seemed to clear away by itself
    the car Would REV so high(4000RPM) and the rev will not match the speed it was engaging gears 1, 2, 3 but omitting 4 ,5,6
    reported to mechanic .. all he did was disconnect the negative side of the battery terminal and reconnect it back then the car performed well with no problem
    Many months later this problem came once in a while and i did resolve it by disconnecting the battery terminal
    the problem became more and or routine service i asked the dealer to service my gear box by changing the ATF which was done and problem still persisted,
    one day on routine battery service the technical told me my battery voltage is low(9.0)V There was no Check engine light , no Battery flashing all good) He Said "U NEED TO REPLACE YOUR ALTERNATOR SOON"look like the alternator is not charging well, he allowed me to drive
    Few weeks later the Starter died and we had to replace it
    after replacing the STARTER 2 months passed by and the second STARTER ALSO died
    we replaced it with a new STARTER thereby after 3 months the ALTERNATOR "DIED/FAILED"
    question
    1 WAS THE POOR OR LOW VOLTAGE FROM THE ALTERNATOR CAUSING THE STARTERS TO DIE?
    2. WAS THE LOW VOLTAGE ALSO CAUSING THE COMPUTER TO MALFUNCTION
    we replaced THE ALTERNATOR and on that replacement we got a volt reading of 12.4V
    now back to the Transmission
    the problem became more common NOW I HAD to always reset the ECU by disconnecting the negative side of the battery every time i want to drive and when i switch off the car if i have to drive it i have to reset by the same procedure and this became annoying
    on diagnostic no error code was captured
    THEN gear box dealer decided we replace the shift solenoid which we did all 8 of them
    same problem car shift 123 not 456 Very annoying
    he then decided its an electrical problem
    then we took to electrician he Scanned said error codep0176( shift body solenoid c remain open)
    learning
    p603 engine stall history
    He said he cannot fix my car because
    which
    2 " am not sure if its the gear box or ECU OR WIRING" GAVE ME MORE HEADACHE
    3.Imay be forced to strip off the car and that is too much of a job to do

    2.I CANT FIND A TRANSMISSION WIRING DIAGRAM ANYWHERE ON THS CAR WILL CHANGING THE ECU NEW ECU BE A HELP remember the disconnecting and connecting battery terminal to reset then the car wud function well

      I am in Namibia Namibia Is Just Next to South Africa, This Car In Quest "Toyota Mark X" is Not a Common Car In This Part Of Africa ,as my car was imported from Japan, The Market here in Namibia is Dominates With VW, BMW, MERCEDES... The car was Scanned By a Toyota Dealer and It Kept Giving I Guess " ERROR " codes Which When Tackled The Problem Persisted Codes Like
      1.P01603 Engine Stall History : Where the Car Would Go Off When I Change gear From DRIVE to REVERSE , Start Engine car Drives Well ...Nothing was Done About This
      2.P0176 Solenoid Shift Valve C Component Remain Open ...Action done...All 8 New Solenoids Were Changed
      Followed by Entire Valve Body UNFORTUNATELY, SAME problem followed By
      3.P0121 Throttle Position Sensor ...SAME sensor changes Problem persist
      4.P1589 Acceleration Sensor Error During Learning Process
      LASTLY check engine light is still on Oxygen senor Were Changed...

      @@michaeldande based on what you said I agree with the transmission dealer. If you replaced the 8 solenoids and you are getting codes for faulty solenoids than I would check the wiring harness and if that check out then replace the ECU. You can open the ecu open and look for bad capacitors. I made a video showing how to do that. Sounds like you have a “gremlin” we call car problems that are hard to diagnose that name. I would buy a digital multimeter and check the wires to the transmission. I would also look at forums and see if there is someone else who had the same problem and see what you find out?

      @@DriversTherapy thanks He scanned the Car there was no code to show the solenoids were faulty no error he changed them based on his experience as per the symptom . i was on a journey 100 km a way from home before starting my journey i had to "RESET" ecu by disconnecting and reconnecting battery terminal ... i drove smoothly until i approached a hill at a speed of 120km definately the car at this point will drop the gear to tackle the hill and i just saw on my rev counter in a split second RPM went all the way UP N DOWN LIKE A seesaw/Compass/weigh scale gauge with heavy load like a crazy swing on the rev counter and from that point i knew it became worse ... The MARK X ecu had 3 chips controlling transmission car and engine...i Still feel there is no problem with the wiring,,,what if a capacitor was failing what if it leakeg and blooked transmission network to OVERDRIVE ..why does the car keep throwing faulty codes which are not faulty
      if it was wiring then resetting ECU wud have not solved it an just thinking
      remember the battey the alternator the starter look at this cycly all replaced ECU needs a minimum Volt To keep Functioning .Is It the ECU. ANY ONE ONE way to Find out... replace ECU if problem persist n we dont find any damaged capacitor then we eliminated all the posible causes n its the wiring.

    My 1UZ swap is200 had bad ECU too
    Will have random cel can’t clear
    Car no start , lots weird problems
    Change to spare ecu solve everything

      But they are 20s old car already …
      Not really fix it , i found out on Dyno ls400 ecu have 20hp less then Gs400 , so I still need to fix my Gs400 ecu to gain my performance back

    Hello, i Have problem with my 93 Supra. My Supra shut while drive but i can start immediately same when she stay. Sometimes she run for hour but sometimes run only a minute. Do you think i had bad capacitor? I had issue with capacitor already in thé past. Thanks for answer😊

      Yes I do. It is not hard to check if they are. Remove your ECU and look at it. Our video helps you identify them. Let me know if you need anything else.

    Hi! Have an N/A Auto JDM supra jza80 ecu, and two tiny surface/smd resistors are missing. How can I figure out which resistors I need to solder back on?

      Hello, before you go on a hunt, did you double check that those are suppose to be there in the first place? You could be right but ecu setups vary depending on many factors.

      @@DriversTherapy Yes definitely. I pulled it out of my supra to check, and two capacitors had leaked so badly that it literally turned those two SMDs into goo. Managed to source one for a small fortune, has the missing resistors on it, but I can't match them because the numbers have worn off them 🤦‍♂️ lol.

      @@DriversTherapy It was idling warm at 2200rpm and wouldn't go into fourth... severe water damage but it cleaned up beautifully. It's just those two missing pieces of the puzzle. Auto n/a ECUs are so rare and expensive so I'd love to have a spare for when the other one needs inevitable maintenance.

      @@DriversTherapy Yep but when I opened up that one, the resistors in there that I need to replace in the other one, had no numbers on them (wear and tear/age, not sure why). I can match up the capacitors easy, writing on them is still very clear but those two SMDs 🤷‍♂️

    I can't believe that I fired the Parts Cannon At My Car. I was even getting different Engine Codes, And Yes Improper Shifting. A Cap was leaking clear Over To A Microprocessor of some sort. I have had this problem for years. The board Is shot. It's burnt to bad. Fourth Five Years Of turning wrenches and the old Girl Got Me Good!

    My Supra has been having a problem where I would put it in drive and it would start out in 3rd gear. Popped the ECU off to see a capacitor had popped and seriously burned the board. I bought a new ECU and after installation it shifted fine but the idle RPMS kept jumping up and down. The next day the RPMs were fine and the 3rd gear problem started again. Took the new ECU out the find that the capacitor had popped. Any idea would could be causing this?

      Hi, it sounds like something is causing a voltage spike and overloading the capacitors. I would recommend looking at the board and making sure nothing is shorted or touching or looks of our place. If you are not able to see anything, while the ECU is out, take it a well-known electronics shop that fixes Xboxes and such, and let them look over the boards. They have equipment that will allow them to do a more thorough inspection if you are unable to find the cause.     Hello friend, I have one capacitor leaking and the hot glue thing in my 4afe ecu ,do I need to remove and change the capacitor or only need cleaning

      If your capacitor is leaking, it needs to be replaced. If it leaked on the circuit board, you can sometimes clean it. But if it’s bad, you might have to take it to an electronics shop. Just make sure you ground yourself before you touch the ECU.

    Hello there!! At 4:00 in the video there are 2 caps next to each other, are those 15mf or 100mf?

      They are 105 degree Celsius Nichicon capacitors:
      The first number is the location on the board and the rest is what is written on the caps. Depending on your ECU, I would open it and verify which ones you have before ordering anything.

    Edited to add: There are several anecdotal stories of people buying "New Old Stock" ECU's and even they have leaking capacitors. It seems time is the issue, not use.
