I had the same problem if you pop the plug and use a gasket to plug off the factory impulse hole, you're in business mine would run long enough to start tuning then die. It took me a couple days to figure it out I'd work on it till i got mad then walk away
Isn't it funny how the simplest things can drive us crazy. My congratulations to your viewer who suggested the impulse line. Well done. Let's see this little rocket run .
Crazy things happen with 2 strokes, 😂 had a few run backwards and a few diesel and run with no spark at all, plug boot off completely. Sometimes they'll suprise you. Glad you got er figured out, now time for a test hit.
The more I think about why the saw ran, I think it's a good sign! I think it means you have good velocity, enough velocity to make great vaccum to draw fuel without the pump. That's my theory.
I have an 026 on the bench that made me scratch my head for a bit, because the pulse line was broke. It ran a little just like that 170 did, drove me nuts! Now is that an OEM MS250 carb, or is it aftermarket? Because everything I have seen on swapping the MS250 carb into a 170 all says direct bolt on. That's part of the reason why I want to do a 170 myself to experiment with that kind of thing.
Small details can make you go crazy for sure. At least your port didn’t destroy the cylinder/cause the issue. Lesson learned. Stihls clearly run off of all of the unanswered prayers of the pious.impulse line schmimpulse line. 😂
They'll run on the low side without impulse to an extent- and usually not for long. They must create enough vacuum from the jet to suck fuel through the line. Trust me I've forgotten to hook up the impulse line multiple times. Sometimes you catch it quickly other times it stumps me for a minute- if it doesn't accelerate that's usually my first clue that I forgot the hose. Even those of us that have done it a while forget the simple things occasionally!!
Knew you would get it Was going to mention the impulse holes on the swap but I saw it running ok so figured you got that. Strange ! Should not have pulled gas at all. Compression on my 170 is at 172 psi. So is that replaced ring not end gapped right ? I think your getting attached to that baby Stihl !!
hey boedy quick questions for you do you think that the holtformma ms170 clone is good to buy i know its not a quality saw but i just need a light rear handle saw that i can climb with because my poulan 3300 is wayy to heavy to climb with also what fasteners does a husqvarna 372 use i want to put together a quality field repair kit like the one that comes with the farmmac saws because i have a holtzformma 372 on the way for a large felling saw so im trying to make a pretty decent fleet of saws a light limbing/climbing saw-ms170 a medium duty limbing/ light felling/firewood saw-poulan 3300 and a large felling/ milling saw-372xp anyways i hope you see this and can help love the channel as always hope your doing well and i look forward to your response
@@joec9680 personall I don’t like the flip caps and I much prefer the screw tops as I’ve had flip tops snap on me in the past and my Saw has been unusable for days at a time because of it

Vacuum venturi affect , suction straight through the jets without help from diaphragm, probably lean
I’m glad you didn’t end up throwing the saw in the last video it really shows you have your impulse control on point 😅

Love the Texaco sign sir. Very cool
I completely forgot to hook up pulse line on my 024 and it ran. Very lean but it ran!! Amazing what these little saws will do!

You said it, Boedy. “Stihl’s the best.” 🤘🏻🤣🤘🏻
Crazy stuff for sure. I was wrenching on a 170 this weekend. Good find and good explanation of what was going on.
👍🆙BigGuy, sorry being late 2 the table, was watching Dubb's live.
I laughed with you in the beginning...I didn't know why but I did.
Great pick up.

Seems like every time I put a ms200t back together I forget to hook the impulse Line up and them saws will start and run .like shit but they will run
Probably just the pressure in the tank pushed a little gas maybe 🤷

I had to drill mine some I guess have plugs and others are casted but closed up.
@@ChippyOutdoors Wow that's super interesting 🤔 I love hearing about all of these kinds of little things about the different parts.
Well I’ll be kiss my ass! 😂😂😂

@@Doc-Cole_Trickle-of-Chainsaws chomp!
Glad you got it figured out
I was going to mention that impulse being in a different location on the Walbro W-215 but assumed you knew and it ran so I ruled that out.
engine vibration on the diaphragm??? + pressure in the fuel tank could possibly have been moving the fuel???
I had faith Ole DB could figure it out. Who would have thunk it.
If you had the brass plug could you have used it to plug up the other hole

take the pick and press put the plug from bottom. the other one you don't have to plug. the boot seals it off
Sounds like a miracle lol
Only sense i can make of it is just enough vapor pressure in the tank to push fuel to the carb🤷🏻♂️
I knew it all along. Just seeing if you could figger it out. 😆
low compression = supercharged, do you shoot the spray can at it? I would like to see a dimpling port

Great job man!
I've seen it go both ways some will run but not good and some will crank but shut back off don't know why but they will.

👍👍 How many more things like this will you run into?
Your smart 👌
I thought you had made contact with itonman 😅
I want to buy that bad boy!
Well now I’m glad I mentioned it lol 😆

You can buy a new stihl ms170 for $189 so the Holzforma isnt that great of a deal on that model, just my opinion.
I’d personally op for the 171 to get the flip caps. Comes in at $219 new.
