I fished an early iteration MS170 (the very boxy looking one) out of an actual skip, it had been thrown away. A custom muffler had melted a hole in the oil reservoir, the nose sprocket was seized and the chain was down to nubs. Air filter was absolutely clogged. New muffler, new bar and chain, new oil reservoir, cleaned air filter. Can't believe how well it works for an actual piece of rubbish that's 20 years old.
My dad just recently gave me his ms170 that sat in his shed for around 10years id say. It started up in like 3 pulls and was idling perfect with fresh fuel in it. I knew it would start but i thought i wouldve had to work a little harder lol
That is the best upgrade I ever did to my 170. I run 32:1 for all my saws because the only ported saw calls for it and I'm not mixing multiple jugs of gas I time em all for that and the 170 doesn't allow you to. I will say after a little muffler mod and retune it runs great. The ported one is a tree monkey 7910. I love it.
Sounds like the chain was too tight on that jackal lol. The wt215 will definitely make a noticeable improvement. Muffler mod too. Did timing advance on mine as well. Some pico chain and a good port job.
I agree - why not? I read a thread 4 years ago following guys wild thingin it up. 3d printing parts, crankshaft relocation etc. Silliest crap I ever heard...I had to try it...two builds at that. Still have one, if it weren't for non existent anti-vibe, I would use it more. Even a 40cc saw gets used here regular, keep one on the 4 wheeler. Look forward to the 170. Thanks.
Just bought a Dewalt battery saw today and noticed that no oil was coming out on the bar(taking longer than I thought it should). I took the bar and chain off and added some oil to the oil slot where it comes out of the powerhead and onto the bar to try to prime the pump. Ran the powerhead and noticed some air bubbles in the slot and then the oil started coming on out. I don't know if I shortened the priming time or if it was just a coincidence, but it is now oiling the bar.

Now that you’re going down the “ Stihl “ road , you’ll find you’re washing your hands more , checking to make sure your clothes are coloured matched and of course you’ll be sitting down to have a piss .
I think he is competing with buckin on the fos scale. Anytime someone has that camera trained on themselves for the majority of the video, you know what you are dealing with.
I'm so happy and excited for you getting that awesome deal! I'm dying to get my hands on an MS170 to port and do that carb upgrade on. I really feel there is some decent potential in that cylinder. Another upgrade you should do is throw a 50 gauge bar and chain on that thing, same gauge as the Poulans have on them 3/8 LP 50 gauge. Makes a huge difference in the performance on those saws. I have ordered in the bar and chain for a couple people so far and the bar alone is better because the nose on the stock bar is terrible.
In some countries like mine those "cheap" clamshell Stihl saws (170, 171, 180, 181) are sold with 0.050 gauge bar by default. So one can easily use e.g. Stihl full chisel Picco chain (63 PS). But I would recommend to try 170 with Oregon 90 chain first. This chain has a narrow kerf, is easy to sharpen (recommended 4.5 mm 11/64" file) and cuts faster than Stihl 61PMM3/3610. PS Oregon for those Stihls offers conversion to their SpeedCut Nano system (.325" , .043", low profile, narrow kerf). The kit includes a sprocket, a guide bar and a chain loop (80TXL). P/N for MS 170 is 614384 (14" bar) and 614385 (16" bar). It would be cool to see how this version of .325 performs against 3/8" Picco.
I love my MS170. I got it for under 200 and it was a screamer right out of the box! It's an impressive little motor for a budget chainsaw. A little tune and a few mods and this is one SWEET little saw!
@@jimbusmaximus4624 I think they are a fantastic value for the money, even before they get some mods. I am about to order the carb, bar and chain for someone to upgrade their 170 and I'm probably going to port it some after 😎
@@patthesoundguy I didn't even port my first one. I ran it for 5 years now with a few tweaks and mods, clutch, sprocket, bar+chain, the thing cuts like a dream! I rarely cut anything over a foot diameter, mostly just limbing, and it still runs like new!

Slowly but surely you are getting the best saws built
After using a MS170 for a few years, I now own a 550XP MkII. I'm much happier now! 🙂
I remember how excited I was when I was a kid and got my first baby stihl. It's an 018c, still have it 23 years later
I love my little 170 best camping saw
It's all about fun!
I have a MS170. Can't wait
I'm glad to see you finally got a sponsor way to go
Looking forward to this one.
Great stuff!
Congratulations on the sponsorship!🎉👍🏻 excited to see how hot you can make that little ms170!
Check out what the 1/5th scale RC car guys do with the Zenoah g320rc motor. There are pipes and superchargers available.
Stihl powah!
Now that is what the big boys run. You dont NEED to adjust the carb because Stihls are perfect from the factory!! 😂
Good stuff , my friend, good stuff. 👍
I use a 170 for trimming trees in power line clearence! Saw does great for that and starts easily every time
It's a great saw for the money. I got one and it WILL not die!

I agree I think that little MS170 was dragging that chain around the bar.
Most definitely way to tight.
Toight like a toiger

Buddy cranked his chain as tight as possible thinking it cuts better 🤣
