This is one of those shows and pieces of media that feels like a fever dream. Any time I bring it up I feel like a crazy person from another dimension because NOBODY seems to remember it at all.

I loved this show when it aired. I remember it was a little hard to follow at times, but the imagery and dark tone was incredible. It's funny to think about what MTV put on the air back then compared to now.
I liked the show a lot despite how extremely bizarre and difficult to understand it was.

I always ended missing this show and caught Aeon Flux instead but. The Max's spawn like style stuck with me along with Reign the conqueror..MTV,Adult Swim and HBO had some Crazy stuff in 90s and early 2000s
MTV was the place for late-night adult cartoons. Miss those days. Liquid television, aeon fux, Beavis butthead,the head, Daria. I know there are more. MTV during the 90's had a nice mix of a animations and of course music shows. Good o' days

Man I love 90s fiction so much. There was such an emphasis on being dark and edgy back then lol but it made way for a lot of good comics/shows/games/movies/series overall

The Maxx is hands down my favorite comic series of all time due to it's nature of touching on abuse, abandonment, and mismanagement in all it's various forms.

I never caught on to what the show was truly about, I just loved the animation, and how cool Maxx looked.. knowing now what it was all about!? Wow! I’m gonna rewatch it all again, or pick up the comic to read it fully.
The uncle SA/R’ed his niece, which turned out to be the social worker.. and, that’s what the whole show is based around- including a homeless man that’s suffering from severe mental illness. He’s one of her case work, but they have a bond.. they’re both trying to escape the misery by living in a false reality. This is deep, and very heartbreaking..

The comics are incredible, the storyline is so mysterious and surreal, part of what made it cool was that fans would write in with thier theories and best guesses as to what in the hell was actually happening in the story haha it is still quite an enigma to this day. the Maxx had all kinds of strange symbolism and dealt with themes of psychological trauma, the subconcious, dreams,... it was unbelievably sophisticated, avant garde and unique. Def worth a serious delving into :)
You can't beat how twisted great The Maxx is. It was actually part of Liquid Television, which is the pinnacle of MTV adult cartoons!

I loved this back in the 90s! Beavis&Butthead, Ren and Stimpy, Aeon Flux, and The Head were my daily pot-head television programs 😁
I forgot about this show and how much I loved it as a teenager... the gritty artwork fascinated me and inspired me to draw my own characters, damn I miss my 90’s childhood days... the 90’s were a great time to be a teenager
I wish this was on HBO Max, which has some classic MTV shows. The Head would also be nice.

This is probably one of the most 90's shows ever. I loved it so much, and I still can't believe it only had 13 episodes.
I'd had the comics first when I was 14. It brought me to tears, and then when the comics were turned into a TV toon and didn't slight us in the complexities, It gave me hope for adaptations as a whole.
Me too, I bought them when I was a kid at comic book show for a buck.
Imagine a day when a show, a cartoon no less, would air on MTV and be allowed to be complex and meaningful.
With how big a hit Invincible was, I’m really hoping Image Comics pushes for more shows and projects for their awesome characters. This and the Spawn show on HBO were amazing adult-cartoons, and I’d love to see more.

I was too young to understand the themes of the show, I just knew that it was a really dark show with a twisted humour I'd never experienced before. But, it stuck with me.. for years. It definitely influenced both my art and my thinking, and began a fascination in me with understanding the darker parts of the human psyche.
For a handful of episodes, it was extremely impactful.
Yeah, after watching this I was like "holy shit, how was I allowed to watch this as a kid?"
I am obsessed with The Maxx. I still remember it, it’s still as cool and strange and complex as I remember!! An age of television and creativity I wish we still had.
Bought the DVD of this series in 2013. No regrets.

This show came out a year after I graduated from high school at a time when I was considering going to art school. It was by far, the most original, disturbing, and beautifully confusing work of fiction I had come across up until that time. It's still one of my favorite comics and television adaptations to this day.
Right there with you; it came out my freshman year in college and got me interested in what seemed to be line art but mapped onto some 3D objects. And the music, love the music. I’ll still watch the series from time to time and seems to resonate for different reasons each time.
Sam Keith is definitely one of my favorite artists next to Simon Bisley. Great video!

I just finished watching this show and I can't believe I had been unaware of such a masterpiece. It took scrolling through tiktok for me to come across a clip of this show. Granted I'm only 20 and it came out 7 years before I was born, but I can't imagine why I hadn't at least heard the name or seen it somewhere growing up. Nonetheless this hidden gem is beautiful. The voice actors, the different animation styles, music, sound design, the architecture and landscapes, especially when transporting us into Pangea. I was immersed for all 13 episodes, confused as to what was real and what wasn't. It gave me such a sense of nostalgia, sadness, and some moments of joy. As a whole the show is quite depressing and reflects ordinary life in a pretty realistic way, delving into the many complexities we humans experience within the confinement of our minds. The ending hit me pretty deeply as I'm struggling to let go of someone myself. Maxx came to a realization that in order to get back to who he was, and rediscover his true inner self, he needed to let go of Julie. As painful as it was, he did what he had to, and went about his own life without her. Whether he was real or just a figment of Julie's imagination still doesn't quite make sense to me. Regardless it's quickly risen to my favorites list and I hope to discover more older, mature shows just like it.

Oh wow…one of my favorite comics from the IMAGE era…I still love and have the comics and the movie on VHS…that art is mind blowing to me. And what a great story. Truly an original concept.

Loved this show. Loved the comic. Read it in junior high. Still have all 35 issues and the spinoff. Even got a letter published in an issue back in the day. Maxx ruled

The Maxx and The Pitt were such underrated comics. So dope, so adult, so violent...
like a second golden age, the comic book store was a goldmine. around the same time as death of superman, spawn, and so much, it was an amazing time.

Man, I remember watching this series with my tiny box tube tv on MTV back when I was a kid, and MTV wasn’t a sad joke of a station. It was trippy, I was especially unnerved by the injured rabbit in a box story. Still an amazing, and undervalued piece of media though.
i watched this as a kid, found it to be super trippy and obtuse, yet it resonated a lot with me. i loved the style in which it is drawn. so expressive.
I watched this series so many times. I truly loved it.
The makers of Primal could probably do this show justice for a reboot.

i bought a McFarlane 'the Maxx' figure a couple years ago... it's not nearly as heavy as i thought it would be. strange-ass story (specially the comic)- love the art!
Wife just got me the maxx TV series on DVD forXmas. After I mentioned it. She never knew about it or me collecting the comics.

The Maxx was the best show to come out of Liquid Television, and I loved it so much I bought the comics too. The story continues in the comics after the show ends, but the first storyline and that grand reveal of what the Outback is and how Julie abd The Maxx are connected is still the best part.

i fucking LOVED this show when it aired. Hell, i watched it so much i memorized the entire first episode. When Maxx was telling Julie goodbye when she left in the last episode, i wept like a little baby.

This cartoon is just a great mix of badass, emotionally deep, and weirdly adorable. The Maxx is an interesting subversion of character, by being brutal yet caring and not as stoic as the stereotypical superhero. Its just a great time to watch !

I read the comics first I liked in the tv show how they replaced PITT with some random monster lol (the Maxx and Pitt had a crossover issue)

Maxx is my comfort creature. Loved the show and the comics, cried my eyes out from both endings.
Before understanding Maxx’s identity, I saw him as some sort of guide/support. He’ll help you through things, but can’t fight your battles. Your demons, your monsters, your past, your traumas are for you to tackle. You won’t make it 100% unscathed, but can be able to finally progress without being dragged constantly from whatever weighs you down.
This was a great show. The idea of reality being warped by perception leads to some amazing existential crises and philosophical debates.
Great review. I remember the music, voice acting and the amazing sound effects.
The world could use the Maxx right now.
And something else I want to say: Sam Kieth is awesome. He made a book with a whole section in the back where fans could connect with each other. He built a community along with a story.
