Incase no one has beaten me to it a quick conversion for Celsius to Fahrenheit is double it and add 30. This will give you a pretty accurate number. 10°c = 50°F and obviously you just subtract 30 and half the number to go from F to C. Love the videos BTW

The coperto is not for the waiters, the mancia is. The coperto is mandatory, costs usually 2 or 3 euros and it is to pay the bread and especially the cleaning of the cutlery and of the tablecloths.
THANK YOU FOR SAYING THE CAPPUCCINO THING IT DRIVES ME CRAZY WHEN I HEAR THAT BS "RULE"! it annoys ME, the puffy jackets craze! Haha. I hate them. And personally, I'm not mad at spaghetti & meatballs, but I lose it when I see supposedly "traditional" lasagna made with mozzarella or ricotta instead of bechamel. Lose. It.
Haha have to say I enjoy it either way, with béchamel or with mozzarella... but I might have a slight preference for the cheesy goodness of mozzarella 😜
Martina V lasagne with ricotta and mozzarella are typical and traditional in the south. Check lasagna napoletana. Traditional dish with as much dignity as the emiliana. And I say that being from Emilia myself.
What you say about the closing time of shops depends on where you live... I live in the lake como area and everithing is open from 8 in the morning until 9pm and there are supermarkets open 24hours a day and I live in a village of 3000 people... so that's a Veneto thing and mostly a Rovigo thing!
I was in Italy for about 6 months, between last year and this year. I noticed that most towns and cities are not very wheelchair/4-point walker friendly. It concerns my wanting to move there in a couple of years because there is no way to know if I'll be stuck in one again. I sometimes need to walk with a cane and noticed people looked at me and dealt with me worse when I needed to use it to get around.
There's no bad weather. Just bad clothing.... Layering is the Norwegian secret. And a good eiderdown duvet for winter. Then you can sleep like a baby, with your window slightly open. Post offices in Italy are most definitely a frustrating experience for an expat. There is a steep learning curve. My wife is from Northern Italy and she has almost constant difficulties when she goes to the post office. It is a very different experience from a US post office.
I absolutely agree. The last time I went to the post office I was in there for over an hour to send a small package to the UK... The beurocracy nearly made me have a meltdown 😂
I miss living in Italy. There were some things I didn't like though. The everything a la carte, the closing of some shops during the day, like you said. How slow my internet was, how people take their time when you're supposed to meet. I got us to that but it was many times where I was told to meet someone at a certain time and they showed up 20/35/40 minutes later calmly strolling like I was early 🤦🏾♀️😅. I still miss it though
THANK YOU! Your videos are very informative aaaand entertaining. 😜. I want to buy property in the Campaniana region. Have you done or thinking of doing any video in that region?
Uhm, the coperto is not a tip, though, you can't think in those terms. There's this misconception that the coperto would be for bread, water, etc. while it's actually for the apparecchiatura - until not long ago you usually did not have a coperto to pay unless you had a tablecloth (a REAL tablecloth, not paper ones), plates, cutlery etc.
We must be lucky in our town in Italy because they don’t take tips unless it’s something above and beyond what they did plus the Post Office is really friendly and convenient. Different than I’ve heard from others. Also my husband is 6’5 and has found jeans that fit perfectly. His size 14 feet on the other hand no way. One of the grocery stores in town have decided to stay open all day. We are lucky. The only problem we’ve had is when we want to do anything to the outside of our 1200 year old house. Lots of dos and don’ts. I know you love it there. You could always move to our town.
I inherited a house, and several parcels of land in Italy. I can go on for hours about the Italian legal system, squatters rights, utility companies, hospitals, water availability, taxes, the banks, driving, parking, the post office and of course the never ending garbage crisis. All of which would make a third world country look more appealing. All these incredible frustrations I experienced with an Italian passport and codice fiscale. Even with the MANY negatives I have personally experienced, Italy is a magical place. Next year I’ll rent in Rome, because home ownership in Italy can drive one insane. BTW, I’ve already spent 20,000 Euros in lawyer fees to get one squatter off a one acre lot and I’m not even close to a conclusion. When a lawyer, or ANYBODY, hears your American accent what it sounds like to them is a cash register. ALL countries have their frustrations, Italy is no different.
I've never lived anywhere but the U.S., so this was interesting to me. I did notice the two times when I visited there the differences in business hours. And, I am so used to being able to get a little bit of everything at American stores. When we were there, the difficulty finding cough drops like we were used to was annoying, especially when half the group got colds at the same time.
That must have been so annoying to deal with! For future reference some pharmacies have a night time emergency window. I have to add it sometimes I miss the ease of shopping in the US... but thankfully you can find a lot on amazon here.

@@RafaelDiFuria Thanks! What was irritating for us is that offices (real estate, etc.) just refuse to pick up the phones! They seem to be unreachable! :D

Yea i’m Italian and i agree on the clothing... i’m big, not fat but i’m 6,2 and bulky and man it’s a nightmare to find clothing for myself.. i can only find midget clothing. Infact i find myself buying American stuff, hoodies and jackets
For more information about that I'd reccomend watching The Italian Citizenship Podcast on the youtube channel Italian Citizenship assistance about the subject. It just went public, here's the link: ua-cam.com/video/Ng2pYJS_7AU/v-deo.html
When I tell you... my husband almost disowned me when I did this... I put cheese in the olive oil and then dipped the bread in. He told EVERYONE we know how insane I was. The food rules can be a bit exhausting. So I just do what I want and don’t care what people think anymore. I follow the rules when I’m in someone else’s home to be respectful, but other than that 🤷🏼♀️
Cheese in olive oil? Yeah, unfortunately I might be of a similar opinion to your husband..... Cheese in olive oil sounds like grounds for divorce to me 🤣
Coperto is not a tip. You're paying for sitting down and using tablecloth, plates, glasses and cutlery. On the menu somewhere they do write how much their coperto costs and that money does not go to the server.
Happy to answer whatever questions I can about it, however unless you or your husband were originally from there, I would have a verrry difficult time to recommend it for anything more than a vacation. A beautiful area with some wonderful people, but if you’re not from there it can be quite tricky to make a life there.
The one thing I hate in italy is that they thinking "all blacks" came through the sea. Well everyday I have to say I applied for a visa and was granted and also lived and studied in the UK. Am only in Italy to stay with my family. Stereotype and ignorance is like a style in Italy..
Yeah but you have to understand where it comes from. For example leaving Italy alone to deal with a huge immigration problem, incresed crime rate and politicians who used them as a political tool to get elected. Btw I'm sorry for your experience, aa you knoe there are ignorant and stupid people here and everywhere else.

I was told by my Italian stepmother, and I don’t know if this is true because it made no sense to me, that the timing for communal heating systems is decided by/in Rome. She lived in Liguria and her flat, although wonderful, sitting as it did above the sea not far from Positino , was like a fridge in October. I was cold.
Dear Rafael, the main reason why we italians don't have cappucino after lunch time is that italian adult population in general suffer of milk intolerance, which, after you had lunch, may cause diarrhea.
Dear friend you are an American that you have been living in Usa maybe for all of your life that it means you have an american culture and also you have your american routine about every aspect of your life. Now everything has been changed quickly so sometimes you get annoying because it s not easy to change every habits. Lets start :the way to count the floors in a building is the same in any country in the world, or the way to write a date so basically are american (usa) specifications. In America supermarkets are open 24 hours sometimes included Sunday. As a customer you are happy but you are also a worker. There is time to work and time to rest and time to spend with family and time to socialize with friends and collegues. A family shop cannot compete with a big shopping center in terms of employees In Usa is normal eating during lunchtime in front of a computer in italy we prefer go with collegues and eat something together . Different perspective quality of Life, vs money. Tips vs coperto . Bars are not charity shops, the service is never free. In the majority of the country is included in the price, in italy is separated. Usa has a special situation if you read in any touristic guide is written tips are mandatory and they are 15-20 % of the bill and even if you will be' not arrested and it is written that it is estremely rude if you don t give any money. That is not true but majority of the tourists follow the touristic suggestion. What do you think is an hidden price?, I think yes . Italian way to say "ogni mondo è paese". Cappuccino is an italian drink . We drink it for breakfast or for a snack during the day never after lunch of dinner. It sounds just weird. We think it tastes horrible after a proper meal. Food is part of our culture we enjoyng eating well and together. I live in England and here they say food is just petrol to have energy. Topic Sizes in shops Generally speaking shops want to make business they don t keep productthat they are hard to sell. American people usually have more muscles or are taller or fatter compare italians. Anyway good luck!
Hi Paolo, just a note that it IS considered extremely rude for someone not to leave a tip in the US. You would only leave nothing or only a few coins as a sign that you felt the service was terrible. So everyone really is expected to tip.
In some countries the people are living from the tip. Cause they earn like 4€/h and the rest is coming from the tip. It has nothing to do with ur kindness to pay or not. You do pay them the salary. Same thing in Spain and Portugal. BUT the coperto it is not just a tip it is more a charge of occupieing the table. If u go in and u pay for a coffee but u stay all day long working on ur notebook this would be hard deal for the owner, so he charges u the coperto. By the way it comes from middle age, when people were bringing their own food to the food locations, eating therier homemade there. So they owner of the inns began to charge them a fee. So if u drink or eat or just sit u have to pay the fee when leaving. And can be from 1€ up to 5€. And what I don't understand is why US citizens always compare the world with the states. I mean for us, ur rules are really strange. I mean the whole world has meter and centimeters and degree Celsius but u do really math. But with the bills u r right. That's confusing even for us. 🤣😅
Im sad that you didn't enjoyed Italy, i am an Italian kid, and when someone dont enjoyes my nation even on UA-cam i get sad, coz i like Italian services. Also i live in Caserta, and is a popular city, but sometimes i don't like it *the problem is the rude people there, they don't recicle by ignoring the project of saving the planet and also the problem is the graffiti they write on the wall* If you want, you can move in Italy, but in Caserta and Napoli, Napoli is a cool city too.

And about bills... do you still have bills ariving through the postal service in the year 2020? All of my bills and most italians bills arrive exatly in the right day through the e-mail address... this is year 2020 not 1990... and of course there are bills that should be paied monthly other every 6 months others once a year depending on the service you are paying... if a service costs 20 euros per year do you think it's a good idea to split it in a number of instalments!!! So that the cost of the multiple cash operations will exceed the cost of the service itself!!! Come on it's a matter of organisation and in Italy we are used to take care of organising on our own we don't need the bank or the post office or anybody else sending us reminders about bills, if you are an adult it is supposed that you can organise yourself if you're a child maybe you need someone who reminds you what, when and how... !!! Bureaucracy is a matter of following the directions and organise yourself. I found to be a nightmare the fact that there isn't a rule that connect the way you write english to the way you read it... so that you must memorise thousands of words and when there is s new word that you have nerver heard before you won't be sure on how it's written until you find it on a dictionary... Italian German French and most languages are so easy on that ... you learn the rule and that's it... this to say that there are things that are really a mess, for instance the fact that english is not a phonetic language so there is nothing to organise you must memorise all and if one try guessing it's a failure most of the times and others that are just a matter of organisation like paying bills in Italy! 😊😊😊 This is why you must forgive me if I make mistakes writeing in english... 😂😂😂
What kind of place did you went in with so short door O.O never seen that. A place where door are very short and everybody, I mean the Swedes :o)), have to bow, is Sweden but only in historical places, restaurants... Anyway, I think there is a law that regulates the height of the doors, we have laws for everything !!
Italian aren’t that tall, they are around 5’10 to 6’ like in the UK, Portugal, France, Spain... the nordic people are the tallest, their average is like over 6’
I would say it also depends, people from the north in my experience seem to be taller than people form the south, but every where I go, I see at least one person my height or taller. Just depends...but yes on average shorter than Northern Europe
Rafael Di Furia France and the U.K. plus Ireland are also North Europe and their average is similar to Southern countries like Italy, Spain and Portugal. I mean Nordic like Scandinavian plus Dutch and German are the tall guys in Europe. I don’t think northern Italian have an average similar to Dutch. Dutch and German average is 6'0... yet of course you can find tall guys everywhere.
Not sure if this is true. But my concern as a woman would be that Italian men feel they can just pat you on the ass even if they are strangers. That’s very scary and uncomfortable. Is that true to this day? It may be an older generational thing.
I am now studying in italy and i relate so much to the heater system. My hate in Italy is dogs in apartments that bark when there owners a out , and spaghetti and meat balls yum I grew up in Australia , and cappuccino I am the same any time is good for me haha .
I am 100% Italian but what I really hate about my country is how racist it is becoming. Obviously you're a white male so it doesn't really affect you directly, but what do you think about the hate culture which has been recently brewing in Italy? What about a video about this issue?
@R& CO I strongly disagree, racist attacks have recently taken place in broad daylight, black people have been targeted just for the fact of being black. Stopping illegal immigration is sacrosanct, stripping people of their dignity because of the colour of their skin or their origin is a shame for the whole country.
@mimmi thanks for assuming my ethnicity, I’m actually both Latino and Caucasian. I think it’s a difficult subject because on one hand there are racists and on the other hand there have been a rise in specific types of crimes seemingly to be connected with certain groups. I don’t believe I’ll be making a video on this subject. Too complex with too many nuances that can too easily be misinterpreted. It’s a tricky situation and my heart goes out to people who’ve been effected by these issues as I and other family members and friends (non-Italian and Italian alike) have also been.
@@RafaelDiFuria sorry for assuming your ethnicity, I really hope I haven't offended you, I just assumed you were Italian.... as you know we don't really think much about ethnicities here and by white I simply meant the color of skin, not the ethnicity. I understand that making a video about this is difficult and controversial, yet you were speaking about the things you do not like in Italy and this is the one thing I have grown to really dislike over the last year or so.
@Hello World no, regulationans about illegal immigration are sacrosanct in my opinion. People shouting on the underground to black legal immigrants (an Afro-American in this case), that they should go home in the most total indifference of the other passangers less so. Young children calling black children "piece of s**t... you're the same colour after all" and the parents look on and do not say anything. People insistently writing in comments that somebody isn't Italian even when one parent is Italian and they were born and brought up in Italy simply because the other parent is from Egypt, well that is way over the top and racist in my opinion.
Good point. I believe that racism in Italy is due to the lack of colonialism experience compared to other countries such as France, UK, Belgium, Germany and Holland whereas these countries are used to cooperate with different countries at institutional / social / cultural / political level. Not by chance, other countries with no colonialism experience like Austria and Switzerland are thought to be racist.
What about the Italian temperament. Even more contrary than the Irish. From euphoria to gloomy, from laughter to crying in barely a minute. As long as you know your alive.
I could commiserate with you on 99% of those irritating Italian things! We just started saying "oh well, that's Italy"! But one thing different in Como is that the supermercati stay open all day. The only other thing that really gets me are the motociclette! Every time we are on the road is like a derby! They go between cars, right up the center line or on our right where we cannot see or hear them! Which is why I don't know if I'll ever drive here! Thanks for another great and informative video. A dopo!
With all due respect, I found this video odd, even odder I see you used the 'hater'. The instances / circumstance you 'hate' are all well know cultural differnces. I think, not unique to Italy, that that is their biggest pet peeve about us, that some visit and just cannot comprehend or even realize they may be not only expecting but demanding this things be changeed to more American like. One problem can be solved by going to the American fast food restaurants in Italy, there will be absolutely no surprises. Yes, I found it odd that these restaurants are always packed. I was even graciously and friendly informed they like these restaruants. Who am I to judge ? I will add if I have the opportunity to know them better, I would return the courtesy and suggest to find and read the ingredients list. I do not know how current, but at one thime there was bleach added to fast food. I just don't see how that can be healthy.

Funny how anglosaxon people call themselves expats while using the term immigrant for other nationalities and ethnic groups. It is part of their attitude towards the world, even when they are the exception they act as they are the norm to follow :D...

Post offices in Italy are most definitely a frustrating experience for an expat. There is a steep learning curve. My wife is from Northern Italy and she has almost constant difficulties when she goes to the post office. It is a very different experience from a US post office.
No questions about that. A completely different experience, in some ways much more high tech, but also so much more confusing the first few times
I absolutely agree. The last time I went to the post office I was in there for over an hour to send a small package to the UK... The beurocracy nearly made me have a meltdown 😂
Or you can inform about it, you can booking an appointment online in the post office site and avoid line

I don't think so, that place doesn't exist !!! lol
Perhaps you mean Campania ;o)
Uhm, the coperto is not a tip, though, you can't think in those terms. There's this misconception that the coperto would be for bread, water, etc. while it's actually for the apparecchiatura - until not long ago you usually did not have a coperto to pay unless you had a tablecloth (a REAL tablecloth, not paper ones), plates, cutlery etc.
Interesting, a lot of people I know specifically don’t leave a tip if there’s a coperto

Your videos are extremely helpful and delightful fun. Grazie. Yes I intend to live at least part time in Italy in the next three years
I inherited a house, and several parcels of land in Italy.

By the way coperto is not a tip but is the charge for the fork, knife and napkin 😢

I totally ignore what they think. I have what I like and have no problem telling them to get over it.
You’ve gotta do you ;)
I love and hate how much Italians love kids. I have an extremely shy two year old an an extremely social one year old. My one year old loves when people start to gather around him but my two year old tries to hide. Grocery shopping is no longer an in and out event. Takes me way longer here with all the people who want to interact with my kids
Post offices... You rub it in
I do a ti have to say, the one here in Rovigo isn’t so bad, I’ve actually had a few positive experiences there.
jesus where did you eat a 7 euro potato?! thats why you shouldnt live in cities :DD
Interesting to learn how Italian restaurants operate.
I hate paying for water at restaurants... not just in Italy but in Europe in general lmao I'm still not comfortable with it... At one restaurant I was charged 3.50€ for just a glass of water
Thats crazy!!!
And I hate having to add a fixed extra to my bill because american employers don't wanna pay their waiters a decent salary. And I hate, when I buy something there, discovering that it actually costs more than I thought. We could go on forever like this, or are we adults?
