    Another great breakdown! Luke is overlooked by others because he wasn’t in a cool band. Luke is a virtuoso! Love that he lets fans play at sound checks. I have never seen ToTo, but just added them to my bucket list. Thanks for the tab too!

    Lukather surprised me. I remember when his instruction video came out. I think it was Star Licks. It kind of bummed me out because he was so good and he wasn't even a metal player. Haha! Great video, man.

    • @LateNightLessons
      @LateNightLessons  5 років тому

      Man, I used to watch that Star Licks video all the time.
      I think I found it on UA-cam not too long ago and it STILL rocks!
      I remember the playing was excellent, but when he showed his rig and gear and the camera zoomed in on that giant rack I was floored.
      It looked like a refrigerator of tone - hahaha!

    First off I wanted to say I really in joy your videos and there content. Your laid back and not over the top or obnoxious you rely on your ability not foolishness. The only thing I would say is your mic seems to pickup a lot of you striking the strings and less of your amp. As fare suggestions lesson I’d like to suggest covering licks from season player and producer Dan Warner. Dan has every bit the resume of Steve Lukather he is also a multi Grammy award winning musician also a Emmy winner which is unusual for a musician. Unfortunately we just lost Dan earlier this month at the age of 49. If you research him I think you’ll see what a great and versatile player he was and it would be a great tribute to legacy.

    Lukather is a well rounded player, his style is so deep that l think this lesson deserves a Part 2. He is also well known for his clean funky rhythms and chords. Thank you so much for this lesson, for share your knowledge with us. Keep the good work 👍

    I've seen Lukather a few times-on the Kingdom of Desire tour as a kid in Germany, with Toto at the House of Blues on Sunset in the late 90s, which was amazing. I saw him with Los Lobotomys promoting the "Candyman" album at the Alligator Lounge in Santa Monica. It was a last minute venue change after the Roxbury shut down, so it was way too many people in a teeny tiny dive bar, and they brought their full rig. It was amazing! And lastly, I saw him support Judith Owen at her annual Christmas singalong at the Largo-just her on piano, Steve, and then Lee Sklar on bass. That was the most recent show, but also the most impressive to me, because he wasn't shreddy, He just was such a super impressive tasteful support to the whole sound. Really gorgeous playing! Shockingly, I can find no video of it anywhere. Anyway, I always love your breakdowns! Thank you!

    I really enjoy these kind of videos and always learn a lot to expand my guitar vocabulary thanks for your work and effort man ! And this first bend-grab technique i remember dealing with that when I learned the mama I'm coming home from Ozzy, zakk is using this and I was like how the hell is he doing it cause back then there was no UA-cam to look for tutorials and I had to figure it out just by hearing it and it took me a while to come to that Idea and try this kind of technique and it was a big revelation for me when I finally figured it out !

    I, for one, love anyone mouthing off about how awesome Steve Lukather is. His career is as insane as his ability, but that's as it should be. And I would have killed to have seen a show from the Kingdom of Desire tour. Lucky you! Great video, thanks.

    Just wanted to mention that Toto are touring the US again this year, for anyone wanting to catch Luke in action. The dates are up now. Dates are also up for Ringo and His Allstarrs Band, which Luke has been a member of for the last 7 years. That tour starts on the first of next month. I have seen both shows in Australia, don't miss them. And Luke does have a MusicMan signature guitar, the latest I think is the LIII, which receives rave reviews too.

    An old bandmate of mine described them as "Steely Dan crossed with Def Leppard."
    Toto had some really fantastic work. Some of their tunes are too poppy for my taste, but when they were on, they were ON. And Luke's playing is ALWAYS good.

    • @LateNightLessons
      @LateNightLessons  5 років тому

      I like it all, but a lot of their albums in the '90s were more rock and less pop.
      Kingdom of Desire was around that time and it totally kicks ass.
      Lukather's Candyman album from the mid-90's is also VERY good!

      Heck yeah, he has all kinds of cool jazzy licks like that and he kind of takes those ideas from people like Larry Carlton, where they're basically targeting chords/arpeggios and blend it with bends, slides, and other techniques.
      It sounds so cool and slippery.

Your even telling his stuff better than he did on his very old star licks video :) And I share your experiance with the response of liking or even being a fan of Toto. Some people just don't get it. @LateNightLessons  5 років тому +2

      I found it randomly on UA-cam and I'd never seen it either.
      It's a short 2-minute video and it's really just him playing around onstage and there's someone filming. He keeps talking to them as he plays and the person filming doesn't say anything in English. And there are subtitles throughout the video of everything that Luke says as he plays. I edited these clips around the subtitles and just focused on his licks.
      It didn't have any details in the description and I'm really not sure when/where it was from or the footage was taken.
