Tales of Symphonia has the best story in any game ever I believe. I have played many RPG's but nothing beats Tales of Symphonia's story. I really thought I finished the game when I reached the Tower of Salvation. Ended up playing over 300 hours together with my brother
Tales of the Abyss introduced me to the series. It became one of my inspiration in finishing my creative works (personal hobbies) so it has a place in my heart.
@Mountain MGTOW yeah but he still shouldn't have been the hardest boss in the game including the ice boss and the final boss, in a league similar to kratos or the 200 man melee.
I agree with Tales of Xillia for an entry point into the series. It was my first Tales game, and I absolutely loved it. After playing Tales of Xillia, I played Tales of Berseria and Tales of Vesperia, and I loved those as well.
My 1st was the original Tales of Phantasia through...'unconventional' means way back then. Cless, Mint, Arche & the rest of the OG crew will always hold a special place in my heart (The OVA's are good too!). The early "special" translation also added a unique flavor to it too. Ah, but lets get to the main point... I'm quite interested in Xilia & others have recommended it too as 'the best' place to start on....but one of the biggest minus about it is that its a PS3 exclusive....that's the factor that affects on a more worldwide scale, "ACCESSIBILITY". Thanks to Steam, the most accessible & probably best recommended right now would probably be 'Tales of Vesperia' as its considered one of the best & has all the things that would make you fall in love w/ the game & the series itself.
If you're mostly interested in the *Classic* Tales of-titles, *Tales of Symphonia* is the one I'd recommend starting with. It has arguably the best plot in the entire series, with a great cast to boot, and the combat is easily the best of the 2D/2.5D-style games. It also helps that it's available on Steam, so it's not nearly as hard to find as most of the older Tales games. This is in my opinion the best game in the franchise, as well as my favorite game of all time, but it might be a bit too outdated for some people. If that's the case, and you're mostly interested in the *Modern* Tales of-titles, *Tales of Xillia* is the best of the bunch. It has a great cast, and though the story feels very rushed near the endgame, it's still a great story overall. Combat is also very fun, and gives you plenty of fun characters to play as. And finally, if you're interested in BOTH the *Classic* and *Modern* games, I'd say *Tales of Vesperia* is the best one to start with. It still looks amazing, but feels more like a classic Tales game in how it's structured. The story, cast and gameplay are all superb, and it mixes some of the best elements from both the older and newer games into what is easily one of the best games in the franchise.
Symphonia was my first Tales game and the one that made me fall in love with the franchise. I would suggest as the first Tales game to play, then Vesperia, then Xillia, Abyss and Berseria.
I appreciate when someone has an opinion based around actuslly experiencing a game. Most reviewers would just write off legendia without even playing it.
I started with Graces, I didn't find it too difficult personally, I found Symphonia to be much harder, especially at the start where you have so little money and items and it's so easy to get your ass handed to you to the point that grinding for money can sometimes be necessary at the start.
Tales of Eternia will always have a a special place in my heart since it's my first Tales of game and that, in my opinion, it had the best monster designs in the series.
I started with a dejap patch version of Tales of Phantasia SNES Rom. I really got heavily into the series with Graces after I beat it with my wife and son.
I’ve tried getting into the series for YEARS. I played Symphonia, Abyss, Vesperia, Graces F, and Berseria. I got 30 hours into Graces F and stopped. This was the farthest I ever got in a game in the series. Until Arise… which I just platinumed yesterday 🥰. I immediately picked up Vesperia definitive edition and am 10 hours into that. I’m hoping I can now go back and really dive into the series
My first ever Tales game was Vesperia back in 2009. I loved it I haven’t played all of them but from the ones I’ve played I’ve really enjoyed myself. Great series.
I think starting with the basics is better, even for skilled players or those looking for a challenge. To me there are 3 correct answers. 1. Start from the beginning with Phantasia. Then you can play them all in order. Awesome! This may or may not include the jp only games. 2. Start with Symphonia, then play the following games in order. JP only games are now of the past and this game was a huge landmark in the franchise. It is for those who have a bit higher standards and want 3d and voice acting. I went this route myself. 3. Play whatever game catches your eye. Some game will probably seem more appealing at a first glance. This is more of a early plot and environment thing, and very subjective. When you go into a game being excited about it, you're up for a good start. For most ppl, I would recommend choice 3, because chances are pretty high that you won't play all games. I started with Symphonia, because I felt confident that I would want to play all of the following games.
I haven't watched the video yet, but should say this. My very first (and so far the only)Tales of game was Berseria. I started it in 2017 and played for a total amount of 8 hours before deleting the game. This happened to a lot of games back then. But for some reason Berseria never left my memory. From time to time I was remembering that game - Velvet, how some cutscenes were 2D, the snowy region around Hellawes, the sea gate Vortigern... And last months I couldn't help it and started playing this game again. And man I'm having so much fun. I haven't played much single player games in past years, but that has to be the best and by far. Unnecessary comment aside, whenever video started with Berseria's battle theme I thought that I forgot to exit the game and instinctively tried to alt-tab.
Oh heck yes, Grace's combat is so so, delicious. I usually recommend Symphonia to people as a starting point, especially since it's on Steam for only $20, but Vesperia has been my go-to recently simply because ease lf availability. I'm really glad Bandai Namco has been making the games so widely available and I hope the trend continues
I go back to Tales of Destiny about once every 5-6 years. it isn't hard so much as you have to be willing to put in the somewhat grindy-ness factor to make sure you level your party. It is not really in the same boat as the newer 3D games, though it did have a unique play as an RPG with the sort of real time control scheme that they evolved with newer tech. for each new game in the series. Anyone that wants to try it should watch some gameplay first and see if they are willing to take that step back in time, it is not a short game to blow through "just to see". I enjoy it very much but I lived through that time and bought my copy new off the shelf so my perspective is different then most gamers.
While I personally wasn't able to get into Tales of Xillia, I admit it really seems like a good entry point. Also, that "childhood chapter" from Graces is my favorite part of the entire series.
I really don't understand why Zestiria would be considered a black sheep of the Tales family. It's a fine game, with a likeable cast of characters, some of the most entertaining skits in the series (the sauna ones are especially great, as is anything involving Lailah and her puns), and it has a sizeable fandom of its own. It's probably not my favorite in the series (that's a toss-up between Vesperia or Graces), but it's a perfectly fine, fun Tales game - and it's also pretty accessible to newcomers. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Tales of Destiny is my first Tales game, tried the PS2 version when I got here in Japan, then the game introduces me to the Mystic Artes WOW! This looks cool, because of that I started playing the series.
Me too! I finished it twice before i even found out about Phantasia. Then Eternia, Legendia and Abyss. Sadly never finished Abyss since my memory card then ps2 died...Never finished the Radiant Historia either, too many games on psp. Then i cleared Xillia, Vesperia, Graces and now Berseria. Still haven't cleared it thanks to my habit of playing 20 games at once though
Symphonia was my first. It will probably always be my favorite (not best game) one. At the time it came out, played it with a few friends on ones GameCube, it got me totally into it and checking out all the previous entries.
First Tales game I played was Phantasia for Super NES via a rom. Although I don't recall finishing it until I bought the GBA version. Didn't even realize it was part of a series at the time. Honestly didn't know until after playing Zestiria. Been working on getting the other Tales of games. Picked up a couple more recently one of which was Legendia. Mostly due to Erick praising it all the damn time.
I played Phantasia/Destiny/Eternia/Symphonia/Zestiria/Berseria/Legendia (in that order) and I recommend Zestiria/Berseria for modern gamers and Phantasia/Symphonia for those who love classics. Legendia has one of the best character development in the series but as a game it's a bit boring for me (maybe I didn't dive enough in the game mechanics).
My first tales game was Berseria and i really liked it, but i haven't been able to play another tales game since so this video helped on what game to play next :)
I'm just now playing Tales of Xillia, it has skyrocketed up my list the further I get into it. Honestly, I was kinda surprised that Abyss was not mentioned.
My first game was Abyss, bought in 2013 randomly. I only have heared good things about it. Honestly it took me two years to beat due to lack of motivation, but after all I am glad I beat it and introduce me into one of my absolute favorite franchises. Beat Abyss and all the ones for PS3 (including Vesperia and Berseria JP-import). As for first game recommendation, Abyss and Vesperia are great entrances because they have a rather simple battle system.
Tales of destiny my first tales game and i fall in love with tales series... So far i already complete destiny, eternia, abyss, Grace f, vesperia and now in progres with berseria.
i've only played one tales game so far one year ago. It was the ps3 version of Tales of Vesperia. It was in japanese, so i hacked my ps3 and got the english patch for the game. It has so much extra content and pretty hard super bosses. And every dialog is now voiced! After 256 hours of playtime (in 2 months) i finally got it to platinum. I had so much fun with it, even though platinuming it was sometimes stressing xD my very first and only japanese platinum trophy kind of a bummer though that one half year later the ps4 version with full english voice acting was released XD
Tales of berseria was my first tales game and I played it on normal mode... I think it was quiet easy so I adjusted it to moderate and I enjoyed it afterwards. I love velvet and Eleanor
Nice a Tales of where to start. Personally I told my friend qnd clwsmate to go Zestiria then Graces F jist get the general feel of them. After that I told him to go Symphonia 1, Abyys, Xillia 1 and 2, Vesperia and Berseria. Aside from enjoying them, I loved their OPs and is always in my playlist when gaming. He enjoyed them though not the early ones nor the untranslated ones. Personally my first is Phantasia on the GBA, I never expected to enjoy it but I did and fell in love with the series since then.
Abyss was my first on ps2, Legendia was 2nd, then Radiant Mythology on PSP, Dawn of the New World on Wii, Abyss on 3ds, Graces F on Ps3, Xillia on Ps3, and finally Xillia 2 on Ps3. I went through a console Midlife crisis a few years after Xillia 2.
@Mountain MGTOW I won't deny there are some of em are really hard to play on touch phone..for me one that involve pressing L or R button while simultaneously press other button...cuz sometime it just doesn't work
First was Tales of Symphonia Dawn of a new world. Tried again now with Vesperia on Switch Sale for $12.49 it is awesome so far, starting with a Hard mode playthrough!
Tales of vesperia was my first I asked my mom to get me a game from game stop and she brought home tales of vesperia and then I played it non-stop for hundreds of hours
Erick I always love your videos. I know I've played Tales of Destiny way back when it originally came out, but haven't touched the series since. My question to you is this: Are there any Tales of games that you would tell us fans to AVOID ? I can get all of the ones that have been on playstation systems.
Hehe, I played through Tales of Legendia twice. The second time, I went through the whole thing, including the lengthy post-game. Turns out the post-game contains the scenes from the opening sizzle reel.
Mine was the Abyss. First experience with a new combat system that wasn't turn-based. Probably the only time I didn't find the grinding monotonous. Also, Bonus Points for recommending Legendia . . . .
Mine was tales of eternia for the psp. Loved the series ever since my second was symphony for the GameCube Tok some getting used to going from 2d graphics and battlefield to 3d. But still a lot of fun
I posted my comment before watching your video, but it was funny to see how similar our suggestions were! One small thing though; while I love Tales of Graces f, both for it's awesome combat system and loveable cast, I really don't see how you can say it has one of the best plots in the series. I would actually say it's the opposite, with the plot being the games biggest weak point.
Like some guys here, my first Tales game was Tales of Destiny on PS1. Like you, I think, Tales of Legendia is pretty good (especially the awesome soundtrack composed by Go Shiina) but on PS2 you forgot Tales of the Abyss which is better IMO.
My first one was actually berseria since i played it after i was dissapointed with FFXV and wanted another RPG to pass the bitter taste and holy shit i did love it so much. Also played Vesperia and abyss later and loved them as well
I think its a pitti that you take in consideration "modern game sensibilities" becouse Tales of Phantasia should have the spotligth in this video in my opinion.
This video would have been useful two weeks ago before I started Tales of Berseria! :P Forreal though, I am really enjoying it as my first tales game! I really wanted to play a more traditional one before I played Arise next year. I own Xillia and the Symphonia collection on PS3 so those are next.
Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition is available on almost everything. It's a great choice. Xillia is exclusive to PlayStation, that's a huge problem. I personally started with Symphonia, but I don't recommend starting with that one.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who like zestiria. I have been trying to like vesperia but I just like zestiria more maybe I need to play the other games more, but so far im absolutely having a great time with zestiria
My first Tales was Abyss. Graces is challenging for sure and one of my favorites. If you have a Vita or ps tv I think Hearts would be a good one to start with. I also love Legendia.
Hmm I'm glad you recommend Xillia, which was one of my favorites too, but why no Berseria? It has one of the best stories for a Tales and the combat is very fun, and it's not really hard either. I always recommend Berseria to any newbie because it's easily accessible (can be found on pc too) and it's a damn great game overall, and needs more recongnition. PS: besides, as an european, a ton of tales never came here yet and I'm still waiting! No legendia, destiny 1 and 2, innocence, and a few others (Abyss did come on the 3ds at least)
Even though tales of graces is one of the hardest tales games, whenever i see people struggling i always want to shout "you actually have to block in this game unlike xillia where you just mash attack!"
yes tales of xillia i love this game....though i played it on hard mode and i found it challenging when level grinding,,,,sadly i didnt finish milla's part because my ps3 went to ylod,,,very frustrating....
Tales of Berseria was the hardest combat system to figure out and Graces F has my all time favorite battle system. I've always wanted to play xillia but can't now. X_X
You're using the term "Button Masher" wrong. It's reserved for games in which you just press the buttons very rapidly and randomly, without a need for rhyme or reason. I refuse to call any game with a combo system such, no matter how easy they can be. At any rate, my first entry was Tales of the Abyss, but it hasn't aged all that well.
My first was Tales of Zestiria... because that was the first game which came out on Steam ^^" I didn't had a PS3, but I liked Zestiria too, so the next was Symphonia on Steam, then the others at PS3... :D Well, almost, I still didn't finish Graces F, I just can't really like that one... and still need to finish Legendia too.
Tales of Symphonia was my first start in the series and got me hooked.
Same here! Such a great game.
Same here. Looking for rpgs on the game cube kinda limited the options, glad I picked it up
Same its my favorite aswell
Tales of Symphonia has the best story in any game ever I believe. I have played many RPG's but nothing beats Tales of Symphonia's story. I really thought I finished the game when I reached the Tower of Salvation. Ended up playing over 300 hours together with my brother
same
Tales of the Abyss introduced me to the series. It became one of my inspiration in finishing my creative works (personal hobbies) so it has a place in my heart.
I wanna add Tales of Berseria second place
"Tales of Vesperia doesn't have any of those difficulty spikes that can ruin your experience"
Gattuso would like to have a word with you!
Kicked my ass
He was harder then The Final Boss, WTF
didn't they fix him in the recent releases to not be the demo version
@Mountain MGTOW yeah but he still shouldn't have been the hardest boss in the game including the ice boss and the final boss, in a league similar to kratos or the 200 man melee.
Schwann was the worst one IMO, but yes, Gattuso is a hard fight too.
I agree with Tales of Xillia for an entry point into the series. It was my first Tales game, and I absolutely loved it.
After playing Tales of Xillia, I played Tales of Berseria and Tales of Vesperia, and I loved those as well.
My first one was Tales of Abyss. Really loved the story. I am currently playing Berseria now :)
I still playing it tho. Since i feel like its so great
Yeah mine too but I got rid of it before I finished it 😞
Tales of Legendia was actually my first Tales game. And now, 13 years later it still remains my favorite Tales game of all time
My 1st was the original Tales of Phantasia through...'unconventional' means way back then. Cless, Mint, Arche & the rest of the OG crew will always hold a special place in my heart (The OVA's are good too!). The early "special" translation also added a unique flavor to it too. Ah, but lets get to the main point...

Thanks to Steam, the most accessible & probably best recommended right now would probably be 'Tales of Vesperia' as its considered one of the best & has all the things that would make you fall in love w/ the game & the series itself.
that boat ride am I right? lol

It has a great cast, and though the story feels very rushed near the endgame, it's still a great story overall. Combat is also very fun, and gives you plenty of fun characters to play as.

Phantasia on the GBA was the 1st i played it on Emulator, lot of fun
Yeah true i even finished its mania mode
Symphonia was my first Tales game and the one that made me fall in love with the franchise. I would suggest as the first Tales game to play, then Vesperia, then Xillia, Abyss and Berseria.
Symphonia can be a bit heavy on the puzzles in each dungeon. This leads to a lot of encounters while trying to solve its puzzles.
I appreciate when someone has an opinion based around actuslly experiencing a game. Most reviewers would just write off legendia without even playing it.
my first was Tales of Berseria, I still playing, but love it
Gracias por tus recomendaciones, ahora sé por dónde empezar
I started with Graces, I didn't find it too difficult personally, I found Symphonia to be much harder, especially at the start where you have so little money and items and it's so easy to get your ass handed to you to the point that grinding for money can sometimes be necessary at the start.
Tales of Legendia and Tales of the Abyss seriously need HD Remasters.
Maaan thanx a lot for this! I was looking to get into Tales recently, so I went out and bought Vesperia: Definitive Edition right after watching this!
Tales of Eternia will always have a a special place in my heart since it's my first Tales of game and that, in my opinion, it had the best monster designs in the series.
Omega Demon Chaos!!! Take this!!! Fun times.
Wow, I've so been wondering about this very thing lately! Ty!
Due to my love of the series , this is one series I say you have to play the series from the start and enjoy the progression of the games.
I started with a dejap patch version of Tales of Phantasia SNES Rom. I really got heavily into the series with Graces after I beat it with my wife and son.

OG Tales of Phantasia, replayed it once the DeJap translation patch came out again and loved the game
tov made me feel like i was back to my childhood.
no game managed to make me feel that way like this one for the last 10 years.
I think starting with the basics is better, even for skilled players or those looking for a challenge. To me there are 3 correct answers.

Yes my prayers and thoughts have been answered
Awesome. Good to know you found this video informative.

Heavy metal and JRPG? Dude you just got a new sub!
And also a huge fan of legendia!? Can I be your friend?
My first was Xillia and from that i fell in love with this series
While I personally wasn't able to get into Tales of Xillia, I admit it really seems like a good entry point.
Also, that "childhood chapter" from Graces is my favorite part of the entire series.
Graces battle system is just "NICE"!
My first was Phantasia. The PSX port is criminally underrated.

First was Symphonia, so I’ve been judging all others by that since; it’s worked out sometimes better more than others
Abyss is easy enough in battles, but its easy to get lost in the world, wonder where your going.
Tales of destiny my first tales game and i fall in love with tales series... So far i already complete destiny, eternia, abyss, Grace f, vesperia and now in progres with berseria.
My first Tales game is Tales of symphonia but my favorite is Abyss
i've only played one tales game so far one year ago.
I had so much fun with it, even though platinuming it was sometimes stressing xD my very first and only japanese platinum trophy
kind of a bummer though that one half year later the ps4 version with full english voice acting was released XD
My first was Graces F. And it got me hooked.
Excellent suggestions. I played Xillia first, and loved it.
Tales of berseria was my first tales game and I played it on normal mode... I think it was quiet easy so I adjusted it to moderate and I enjoyed it afterwards. I love velvet and Eleanor
Tales of graces was pretty complicated but it's a very enjoyable one though
Berseria is my favorite Tales of game that I have played so far. The dark story and complicated characters make it the best in the series.
Nice a Tales of where to start.
Personally I told my friend qnd clwsmate to go Zestiria then Graces F jist get the general feel of them. After that I told him to go Symphonia 1, Abyys, Xillia 1 and 2, Vesperia and Berseria. My first tales of was Symphonia Chronicles on ps3.
I got a psp emulator on my phone this morning and I just got tales of the world raidiant mythology i love it so far
@Mountain MGTOW yeah it isn't easy,i tried playing Pokémon ranger but it isn't easy too
@Mountain MGTOW yeah i love RPGs i finished final fantasy tactics and disgaea 1 and 2
@Mountain MGTOW well I've played Tales of Symphonia on my phone using Dolphin emulator....and i managed to finish ed it no problem!
Man, I love Graces! Best gameplay in the series, yet!
Tales of vesperia was my first I asked my mom to get me a game from game stop and she brought home tales of vesperia and then I played it non-stop for hundreds of hours
I buyed tales of vesperia, zesteria and berseria, which one i should play first?
I just picked up my first Tales game: Vesperia DE on sale for Switch, just beat Gattuso, really fun.
Erick I always love your videos. I know I've played Tales of Destiny way back when it originally came out, but haven't touched the series since. My question to you is this:
Are there any Tales of games that you would tell us fans to AVOID ? I can get all of the ones that have been on playstation systems.
My first Tales of game Is Symphonia
My favorite game
That first fight with Rupert was brutal, my little brother beat me up.
Hehe, I played through Tales of Legendia twice. The second time, I went through the whole thing, including the lengthy post-game. Turns out the post-game contains the scenes from the opening sizzle reel.
I got into the Tales series through Tales of Vesperia. A friend of mine bought the game for me a few years ago.
Mine was the Abyss. First experience with a new combat system that wasn't turn-based. Probably the only time I didn't find the grinding monotonous.
Also, Bonus Points for recommending Legendia . . . .
You should do this for every (at least) major rpg franchise!
I think it would be perfect as a beginner´s guide!
Mine was tales of eternia for the psp. Loved the series ever since my second was symphony for the GameCube Tok some getting used to going from 2d graphics and battlefield to 3d. But still a lot of fun
I'm starting with Zestiria.
Tales of the Abyss is way way way better than Tales of Legendia!!! Facts!
I know it's not that popular, but the first Tales game I played was Zestiria and I liked it as my first Tales experience
Man.... Ashur from Spartacus sure has made a fine RPG youtube Channel
notification squad here! (:
Legendia was my first and still the favorite.
Eric question? Which tales of games that allows you to change character names?
This video would have been useful two weeks ago before I started Tales of Berseria! :P Forreal though, I am really enjoying it as my first tales game! I really wanted to play a more traditional one before I played Arise next year. I own Xillia and the Symphonia collection on PS3 so those are next.
What do you think about Tales of Abyss?
Love it
Am I okay to watch this, I'm not a target audience.. btw my first Tales is Phantasia
Graces F is my first and my favorite
I only played Tales of Hearts R on the PS Vita great game. Now I just want to play the others.
My first tales of game was symphonia chronicles then followed by xilla 1 and 2
Hmm I'm glad you recommend Xillia, which was one of my favorites too, but why no Berseria? It has one of the best stories for a Tales and the combat is very fun, and it's not really hard either.
I always recommend Berseria to any newbie because it's easily accessible (can be found on pc too) and it's a damn great game overall, and needs more recongnition.
PS: besides, as an european, a ton of tales never came here yet and I'm still waiting! No legendia, destiny 1 and 2, innocence, and a few others (Abyss did come on the 3ds at least)
I thought my first game was Tales of Symphonia, than i learned i played Eternia on the PSX before.
Even though tales of graces is one of the hardest tales games, whenever i see people struggling i always want to shout "you actually have to block in this game unlike xillia where you just mash attack!"
My first tales was the translation of tales of phantasia for the snes
yes tales of xillia i love this game....though i played it on hard mode and i found it challenging when level grinding,,,,sadly i didnt finish milla's part because my ps3 went to ylod,,,very frustrating....
love your vids buddy
ive played tales of destiny 2 only its not the best story but its an amazing game i think im gunna get the switch version
Tales of Berseria was the hardest combat system to figure out and Graces F has my all time favorite battle system. I've always wanted to play xillia but can't now. X_X
The first Tales games I bought was tales of the zestiria besperia Vesperia
Tales of Eternia period.
Hell yeah clan of Xymox!
I managed to beat Tales of Symphonia, not on the GameCube, but on the Wii, tried the Tales of the Abyss.
