- Last year, Sri Lanka declared bankruptcy and reached an agreement in principle with the IMF that was supposed to be finalised by the end of 2022.
The $3 billion bailout has been delayed and Sri Lanka's major creditors, China and India, have to agree to write down the debts before any money is released.
Sri Lanka is seemingly trapped between two superpowers with neither one wanting to blink first.
Economics Editor Ben Chu examines how India and China are vying for influence in Sri Lanka from the island nation's politics to its infrastructure.

Exactly. We took on insane levels of high interest commercial debt since 2009 to fund our budget deficit and subsidies. Power is on average subsidised at 50%. Didn’t invest in creating high tech industries.

I have a hard time believing that the "goodwill" (as you put it) efforts by India is a complete act of selflessness and compassion for their neighbour. Lastly India also gifted 500k COVID vaccines to srilanka free of cost. Now even after all these efforts, if still people think India is bad in helping srilanka, then I hope India don't help srilanka anymore. India always had a neighborhood first policy, that's why vaccine maitri programme was launched to give free vaccines to neighbors all other Central Asian, African, and carribean countries are way more thankful to the help from India, but Srilankans no way😬😬.... @@MAnne_2023 Look at all the countries who took loans from srilanka under BRI initiative,all those developing countries have worst economic crisis now, the loans provided are at usually 4-8% interest and for a period of 8 years unlike other loans which 0.5-1% interest for a period of 10-15 years. And funniest thing is these infrastructure projects will be done with Chinese companies and their citizens so ultimately the money is going back to China, And Srilanka will pay the loan and doesn't gain any domestic industry from these projects. And then China took Hambantota port for a 99 year lease and Chinese military and spy ships dock there, don't you think that's a security risk for India huh? China started all these shit with their wolf warrior diplomacy and debt trap policy. If Srilanka don't learn from all these issues, there is a bitter future awaiting them, just like Pakistan is suffering now.

It is not quite correct to say that Bollywood Dance is being imposed by India or Indian influence. It should be known to all that there is a sizeable population of a Tamil minority in Sri Lanka, who also follow Indian Dance culture in Sri Lanka.

The crisis is of their own making. Many developing countries are facing indebtedness because of situations beyond their reach (Covid19, Russian invasion of Ukriane etc). Sri Lanka is an exception. Their situation is of their own making. Wasteful expenditures and corruptions are one part. But the sheer callousness of the government to not approach the IMF on time and neglect the debt restricting process beforehand was atrocious.
In 2021 some politicians were thumping their chest and were rejecting the need for an IMF bailout.
Stop blaming India and China. India shipped everything from rice to fuel to ease shortages. No one is making Sri Lanka dance.

The Rajapaksas were probably the most corrupt but every single government since independence, only succeeded in dividing the country while feathering its own nest. The constitution has been ammended and abused by every single leader since Jayawardene and the Prevention of Terrorism Act is still in force. There are no political parties as we know them, only alliances between elite political families who have been running the country since 1948 . . . . It is Buddihist monks who tell the "people" who to vote for, they campaigned for the Rajapaksas, the Bandaranaikes and everyone else and unless this changes, there is no hope . . .

First of all india has nothing to do with sri Lankas situation, but we have limitations to help them because we are not a wealthy country like China or Europe, we are not in competition with china, the port we are building is for transit our containers through sri Lanka becs they are more close to international shipping route and its a help for sri Lanka we are not sending any military ships to sri Lanka either unlike china they send their war and spy ship to sri Lanka when ever india test a missile or rocket.
There is a new port under construction near Trivandrum and it will be the only mother port of all ports in India.😂 Actually nobody outside knows about this other than Keralites. Once it is completed we can get access to Intl shipping lane easily and can grow bigger than colombo port.

Beautiful country....very long history of strife and generational traumas, yet the people are hospitable and kind. What a juxtapose. But now people in their 30's and below who are skilled or have the ability to migrate, WILL.
Both China and India are vying for influence almost everywhere in the neighborhood. It's much vivid in the case of SriLankan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Myanmar. In Nepal's case, prime minister Modi wouldn't fly to Gautam Buddha International Airport( Nepal's newly built second international airport built under Chinese assistance) to visit the Buddha's pilgrimage to nearby Lumbini. They also wouldn't want any electricity to be imported into their country that have Chinese investment; do Nepal forced to select Indian companies to build hydropower, as they require massive capital to be built( and Nepal don't have money to build on its own). I guess, there are similar parallels in other regions within south-asia and beyond as well.

They failed to use the help coming from China, US, India & EU in a smarter way and become a developed economy in a short period of time. Developed World should remember that that their strategic base at Diego Gracia is about 2000km South from SL . India, being current President of G20 needs to sell the idea to G20. Loans will now be shared by a consortium of nations , so that individual nation will bear less burden. However, SL must assure the consortium that they will not take any further loans from China. Consortium will give money at marginally lower interest rates.

I love Sri Lanka. They are great people and its a beautiful country. I've been going there since 2012. I've watched the country develop in real time. Its been amazing in the North dirt roads became highways and in Colombo shiny new buildings popped up like mushrooms.
However, to echo the other commentators the reason they got into trouble was bad management decisions and corruption.
The big error that the Sri Lankan government made was massively over valuing the Sri Lankan Rupee against the USD. When covid19 hit tourism - an important industry and source of foreign currency for Sri Lanka - vanished. Without that injection of foreign currency they ran out of dollars to buy oil and couldn't get more as there currency wasn't pegged correctly. Hence the current crisis.
I'm hoping that they can come out if this one stronger and 'fix the financial plumbing.' If they can it's a great place to base yourself.

The IMF and WTO and their free market policy pushed the developing countries to the brink of their collapses. For the very reason many domestic companies gone out of business for good. In addition to that they are proactively encouraging the consumerism which is another reason that developing countries are finding themselves in those awkward positions.
