Making a movie alone with the Osmo Pocket 3

- The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is a great vlogging camera... but can you use it to make a film by yourself? Within about 45 minutes of buying the camera, I was already up and running. I cut together a little scene based on the shots I was testing out the camera with. Is it fantastic? No! But it does show the promise and possibility of the camera. I'll be going over settings for a more cinematic look, camera placement, framing and directing tips for filming scenes alone.

Dude, great job putting that together!! You're the first person I've seen actually put the camera through its paces for creating an actual film sequence. Thanks for taking that initiative!
Thank you …that is so kind! I am gonna put together a scene with dialogue and we’ll see how that feels!
@@AndyRiesmeyer Awesome! I just scored two Pockets and have been putting them through some initial tests. I’ve got much larger kits but wanted to go micro for a series I’ve started, so pairing these Pockets with two Nikon Z30s and Osmo Actions, hopefully I can get all the footage to jive once I hit Resolve 😂
Right!? I’ve been looking for someone to do this since it came out! All the videos were just the usual shill suspects as expected.
Agreed been looking for this.
Thank you for making this. Bought pocket 3 for filmmaking purpose because i didn't want to carry around bulky things. Not all heroes wear capes. Thanks again for making me believe i can create even with a pocket 3 😂😂
Thank you for listing your setting over the actual shot you are shooting!!! I love it when I can see the results of different settings and see it right on screen. Thank you!!
THIS is the content I need.... please make this a series
this is a cinematic example,a proper short movie.
Great job
ps the tracking is great
Thank you! It’s pretty cool! You just have to be deliberate with your moves, I think.
Yeah, I just needed to see something like this to know what it could do. It really held up in the low light.
I’m curious to see their upcoming pocket variants in the next few years
I love your vibe dude. Everything from the Delorean, to the music production setup, to the camera choices... haha. This is exactly why I bought this camera. It is an all around win for filmmaking/music production nerds. The fact that you're using this thing for KTLA 5 stories is mind blowing to me.
Looking forward to more videos from you with this pocket 3 👍🏼
thank you! working on it!
I would immediately go and read some horror short story anthologies -- stuff that's pre 1990s. Many of these short stories would be perfect for this kind of treatment! Your video inspired me to get my own pocket 3!
Great idea! Any titles you could recommend?
anything by lovecraft, df lewis, poe -- most of these have very small numbers of characters. Wanna see your channel blow up? Crowdsource pocket 3 footage for a crowdsourced movie!
I just found your channel yesterday, February 17, 2024, and it was love at first sight. Judging by the number of subscribers, I figured you were already in the movie industry. I mean, this guy can't have such a few subscribers with so much professionalism. Anyway, it turns out you are in the TV business and making videos professionally already. Keep up the good work and it won't be long till you reach a milliion subscribers. Congratulations! Guys like you inspire me to work harder.
"They're not likely going to be using this on a big set where they have legitimate cinema cameras." - I'm using one right now on a feature documentary project, where the rest of the cameras are big cinema cameras. It has been fantastic to stick on the end of a pole and use it to get crane style shots and smooth tracking shots that we wouldn't have time to do if we were trying to rig out the cine cameras for it. It is amazing how cheap this camera is, yet the huge increase in production value we are able to get from it.
That’s great to hear!!!! I have been using it a ton for broadcast since I bought it - helped so much and nobody has complained!
it’s giving me unsolved mysteries or docseries vibes. good stuff!
very cool - as the principal photographer at the City of Seattle - I think this is a very worthy addition to my camera repertoire. Glad I found your channel! Catch you over on IG - thanks Andy!
Great to see something really creative done with this awesome little camera! Hopefully, we'll see more of this in the future than mostly unboxing and walk arounds. Great job!
He’s great at creating cinematic videos. we want to see more reviews posted😊
Thank you so much! I have a lifetime of gear I would love to share with you all...more coming soon, appreciate the kind words..@@denniszhaunerchyk6191
@@AndyRiesmeyer Great! I’ll be waiting for new reviews!
I guarantee you're gonna start getting free stuff now lol, this cinematic video, along with the other one that you made, is what made me jump off the fence and buy the pocket 3. Keep these coming
Andy, thank you so much of this video. This is exactly what I wanted to see and how this camera would preform in low light situation. Plus that was interesting to see what you came up with in a short time frame and doing that all by yourself. Please make more videos using this Osmo Pocket 3.
I was waiting for something like this! Wonderful work! Now it needs 1.5x, 2x, 3x. Optical converters or lens like some phone cameras now have
Thank you! And yes.. would be great to get one of those Zenmuse zoom lenses on a handheld
The performance of this compact camera is truly remarkable.
Crazy
I got the Osmo, but haven‘t fully used it yet to shoot video. You did a hell of a job and I actually liked the vlog-elements of it too. I need to see what else you produce, so I‘ll follow. Keep it up, Andy.
thank you so much! I have spent the past 5 years working at KTLA in Los Angeles and most of my content is on my instagram page, (at)AndyKTLA. Thanks!
Glad to find your channel.
U deserved more subs, my friend.
What a pity that I live in Germany! Would love to do something like this together.
Amazing video man. Just got the pocket 3, super exited to work with it. Subbed!
I got this camera to replace my phone. It is great so far. It makes videos very similar in quality to what some $2,500+ cameras produce.
Merry Christmas.
Great movie great vid👍🏼 You make DJI Pocket 3 even more lovely😁 and proven it is definitely worth investing at🤨 Oh yeah, you can be a great director too😄
Thank you so much! Appreciate the kind words. I’m glad I bought it!
Best scene I've seen yet, using the Pocket 3. Also, didn't even notice anything technical while watching it. And it wasn't until you pointed out the noise in the shadows that I even noticed. - Had more to do with having a film experience, than a watching a typical review... which this was NOT. Well done!
Wawww this is amazing bro😌 more please
Many thanks Andy just the kind of video I was looking for. everyone has theirs shot outdoors on a sunny day.
Thank you! Great to see how easy you make things with the Pocket 3 😀
I don't know if I've seen someone review gear in such a genuine way. You can actually believe your personality on camera is the same person you would see of camera. Also record more music, I liked the most recent video I think it was Andy and the Valley. Liked the music video too
90s movies & look really classic😎👊🏾👊🏾
Awesome job - your audio choices also make a huge difference 👍👍
I get a sense the camera had little to do with the movie as the suspense was constructed through audio and choice of settings so the actual camera as a choice I learned seems optimal for low light capture in the hands of the uninitiated to cinematic aesthetics.
Subscribed for hopefully more op3 content
thank you! on it!
@@AndyRiesmeyer thank you for your insight. You make great content.
Cheers from Arkansas
A refreshing video - with a new take on the pocket 3. Thank you.
This was a really cool round up
did not look through all the comments, but you can change the tracking speed but adjusting the gimbals setting to slow. I believe there are 3 modes (sport, normal or slow). At least last time I checked.
Excellent video, I enjoyed how you showed really what happens.
Impressive…most impressive! I’m now tempted to get a Pocket 3. I would love to compose music for a short film like this one. Give me a shout if you decide to do another one. Great job.
let's do it!
@@AndyRiesmeyer cool!! I’ll DM you my info on IG.
Great! It's good enough for Tubi right now
HAHAH
😂
This is brilliant! Just the video that I needed to convince me to get the Pocket 3!!
Really well done with that cinematic sequence! Would love to see you experimenting more with this camera!
This is exactly what I was looking for. Amazing what this little thing can do. Thank you dude!
Good And Great Job Bro
You have only 1900 subs? I thought you have like a million! If your channel would be a stock, I would buy a lot of it man!!!!
i just bought this one! can't wait to starting filming!!!
Your channel is so underrated. Incredible quality and really good explanations 🔥🔥
Bro your work is better than all Tuby movies 🎥 you go crazy
Thank you for making this it’s amazing 🎉
Very nice Andy you did a wonderful job keep em coming.
Very well done! Truly captivating little movie and nice, little review.
Thanks for this very nice video
The future of filmmaking imo, dji should make a pro version with 43 or apsc sensor + raw video and you got a unobtrusive stealth like filmmaking tool.
Would be so awesome. The built in remote framing / audio all in one is such a game changer. I’ve never worked this fast
Really well done. A little more creepy nightmare on elm street/Friday 13th sound design would have really killed it.
oh great idea!
Great video‼️ it held up well nice story telling, cant wait to get mine.
Looks great! This was a super cool idea. Love how you put this together, really interesting stuff! 🙌🔥
thats awsome that
Please do a video making a product commercial with the op3 Your videos are awesome
Bro this is crazy 🔥
If this is the same quality as what you shown here in youtube, then im purchasing this to replace my gimbal for wedding shooting, cause some wedding place require me ti travel light. If this work, i dont hv to worry bout any gimbal shoots anymore for run & gun & able to travel light at the same time 😊😊😊
Thank you that video was awesome
Hey man thanks for this! Subscribed
That was great!!
thank you! Imagine what I could do with some proper planning... and talent!
It's a great movie - congratulation 👍
Awesome video 👍🏻👍🏻
You convinced me dude. This is the tool i need to do solo content, even more socthan the zve1
Im about to retuen it for this just because it makes life easier with active tracking and the creator combo is a fucking steal for $1700 less. Besides, i own the fx30 for anything i film for others but for me? I need a pocket 3 to bang content out lmao keep creating brotherr
I wonder if they'll firmware update it so they can adjust the focus speed. Really hope they do.
That DL shot was 🔥
good stuff my guy.thanks
Great Work, I love this camera !
Great short with the Pocket 3.
Really nice "movie" on DJI P3. Only anamorphic flare is missing to make me believe it's real cinema rig :D.
You can adjust the speed of tracking I think or you can slow down the gimbal movement and speed it follows you around that can compensate with snappy looking shots too
Very good video.. Phone looked great but on TV i can see the noise pretty bad.. Not your fault.. It's the sensor.. So cool though
That quality is insane 😮😮😮😮
that was REALLY impressive
You know what you’re doing good job
Great Stuff!! Footage looks amazing!! can you do a quick break down of how you color corrected it? Thanks
Extraordinary!
Outstanding work.
w o n d e r f u l, Man
Really well done!
hi Andy! thanks for making this video! it helped a lot.. also to ask, what is this type of cutscene, and how to find this to add on to a video? its at 0:07.. thank you
Bro fire!!!! 🔥
ive found continuous auto focus sucks balls, best to use single point or showcase. Showcase actually holds focus and will swap to anything right in front of the camera. Continuous loses focus when something is back lit sometimes.
Awesome. Use your app to frame the shot?
new subscribe n new fan off you brother
Think you should limit the ISO-range in dark scenes. There's an overload of noise in many of your shots.
The Pocket 3 is a great creative tool, though!
I would thinking to do like documentary journey for myself. I would need second microphone
I don’t hate this camera but the 2.0 F stop is weak. I could totally see this with proper light as a movie making choice on a budget.
I found that low light mode crushed blacks too much and made some colors simply unnatural. Hlg is the best to shoot in low light, was surprised by the dynamic range from this little thing
❤ i like ❤
Buddy did you add the black bars afterwards?
+10000 Dji should update via firmware so the gimble can nove slower when tracking for slow scenes. It looks weird now 😢
In terms of filming by yourself this is actually pretty decent, however one other person or even two for some lighting as well would really up the production quality for exposure and camera movement. Like the stationary shots of you walking into the door could have a little slider type movement to make it more dynamic
Hey Andy, love the video. I used to shoot stuff as. a preditor in LA, but now I'm just a freelance guy that shoots interviews at conventions or in offices occasionally. Frequently 2 shoots. I like traveling SUPER LIGHT. My main cam is a Sony A7III, but I'd like to travel with even less footprint. With a tripod and a couple of rollup LEDs (I also deliver 1080), can you get away with going to something like a CES to do 2 subject interviews with this? Is the wireless mic good for this? This camera is looking pretty sweet. Would you suggest? I'm not a cinematographer and I'm often on a baby-budget, but I'd love for this to be my main gear in a super low footprint kit.
Dark scenes look very sharp, did you use any post denoise? Great job overall and thank you for taking the time ;)
No denoise! Thank you so much.
You can actually slow down the follow speed
what is the name of that flashlight?
Awesome
How many sequence or shoot to make this clip
So what I am assuming is that it isn't the best in regards to low light settings. The only reason I say that is because I noticed on the outside shots, it was a bit grainy in some portions. What is there that can help with that issue, or is it just unavoidable with the current technology it has? looking to invest in one, and just wondering if anyone here can vouch that it is worth it for the price point etc.
I don't mean to besmirch the name of the Osmo Pocket 3.... the low light is actually much better if you shoot in low light mode and not D-Log like I did. Is it as good as my FX3? No, of course not.. but it's also 1/7 the price...and as I said, any camera will have issues if the settings aren't correct. I will do a low light test next week to show what the camera is capable of in that regard... but as far as I'm concerned there is no better all-in-one camera, mic and gimbal combo for the $$$ you spend on the creator combo.
Well he is a youtuber and I am not sure if he nailed the lighting/iso etc settings (He wasnt even sure if he should use low light mode or not), and probably colour grading and compression was off. Plus youtube compression on top of that.
You better off watching other reels on youtube about the pocket 3 in low light to get the bigger picture of capabilities.
Thank you for your reply. Your short film came out fantastic by the way. But yes I definitely with what you are saying. Stoked to see the low light test next week!@@AndyRiesmeyer
@@Nonixification See 3:38 please... There were no lights, I limited the ISO to 1600. That's just what the camera looks like in D-log. I literally just got it out of the box and started shooting... Also, damn, I wish I was a UA-camr. Unfortunately I still have to make my money in traditional Hollywood. 😂
Why would you use any LOG profile in low light. It doesn't make sense. Use a natural/normal profile. I have this camera I love it.
