Alan Armstrong (Kane Richmond) as the Spy Smasher is a costumed vigilante and freelance agent, not associated with the US government as the country has not yet joined its allies in World War II. After discovering information about Nazi activities in occupied France, he is captured and ordered to be executed. However, with the help of Pierre Durand (Franco Corsaro), he escapes back to the United States, meeting with his twin brother Jack (Kane Richmond). Jack is incorrectly recognized and attacked by a Nazi agent on American soil. The agent works for a sabotage leader codenamed The Mask (Hans Schumm), who operates a U boat near the coast. Eve Corby (Marguerite Chapman) plays Jack's fiancé.
The French man gave his life for Spy Master That’s what hero’s did in the day. 🕊
These serials inspired patriotism and loyalty. Thousands of kids wore hero capes and masks and fought the bad guys!💕
Great serial!👍🏼 We need a Spy Smasher today!😉
It is too bad they never made more of these. This was a time when there was real creativity in Hollywood.
around 300 or so serials r out there
more like 500
they have serials have existed since 1910
@@AngelenaCrowderWhat I was referring to was this one. It was done because the USA was heading into World War II and the people needed some motivation. With the Cold War after World War II, they could have run a few of these.
I think it was probably because World War II superheroes we're just generally not as popular as they once were as there were not many nazis to beat anymore and there job was pretty much already done and Golden Age superheroes were just fading out after ww2 @@tommack352
These serials are great!! Thanks for offering them.
One of the best action movie serials out there 👍🏾
I agree!
Can you all imagine a feature length remake of this serial? Like, a 2hr movie and done with majority practical effects? That would be dope!
Republic generally did the best serials, and boy, this one is action from the opening scene! Great one for the kids then, and us now...
My father always remembered this as his favorite serial. He would have been around 9 years old when it came out. I've never had a chance to watch it before, but now I have to check it out.
Another "Smasher" from the Studio that knew how to make them - Republic. Its such a pity that Society and the passage of time has altered the fun side of life at the Cinema.
Movies made during war to inspire the young to become soldiers and heroes. Good strategies, dangerous but full of adventures and defiance.
Fun to watch. Such silliness. Love cliffhangers. 🕵️♂️🦸♂️
Republic had best fights. All furniture destroyed. Sorry Ethan Allen
Yes, they really trash the room.
Actually a quality film with lots of care considering its low budget. Excellent cast, efficient camera work, the stunt doubles give it their 100 percent. (Kane liked doing his own stunts - so perhaps he did his stunts in this serial.) Special Effects by Howard "Babe" Lydecker - who along with his older brother Theodore Lydecker were the undisputed masters of miniature special effects in Hollywood from 1935-1953. …Rowby.
My favorite serial followed closely by The Masked Marvel.
Oh i see thank you for your description. This film remember me when i was child. And thank you too for this posting
Not low budget in those days.
@@king-xerxus7040 actually it was. The budget for Spy Smasher, which at 3.5 hours was like making 2 feature films, cost $153,680. Casablanca, made the same year and considered an average budget "A" picture, cost just under $1 million.
@@AtomicAgePictures I respectfully disagree. Casablanca cost much more to make also due to the popularity of its cast for sure. But according to the value of the dollar at the inflationary economic rate at that time a $153,697.36 budget was the near average cost in many feature films, including ‘flash Gordon,’ Superman, some horror films, westerns, etc which were not considered low budget films ‘at the time’ by mainstream feature film makers and producers. Today one might conclude that the less costly films were low budget films simply by comparing those films to more marketable costly major motion pictures like ‘gone with the wind’ and of course ‘Casablanca.’ But, for sure the less costly feature film were not considered ‘low budget’ films at the time. A $150 plus thousand dollar movie back then was comparable to a $25 million dollar movie today.
I remember watching "Spy Smasher" on channel nine here in NYC back in the sixties or early seventies. They aired an edited feature film version instead of the original twelve chapter version. Both versions are enjoyable viewing.
It was called "Spy Smasher Returns," and it's available on DVD.
@@davidsigalow7349 I remember that edited version being called "Spy Smasher" but you could be correct and you say that edited feature version is available on DVD that's good to know. Thank you David.
@VicMartino I grew up in the NYC area as well. I spent a lot of time watching movies on channels 5, 9 and 11, including Million Dollar Movie and Chiller Theater.
@@davidsigalow7349 ME TOO!!
@VicMartino ...not to mention "Wonderama" and "Just for Fun," with yhe late, great Sonny Fox. Great memories!!
Boy, when they had fist fights in those days in the movies they fought.
William Witney choreographed his action scenes and fights like dance numbers, which is why they are so sharp.
Dayum... Ol Spy Smasher sure had some moves, How sad is it, that this is a thousand times more entertaining than anything running on Disney+?
This is even better than the Batman serial.
As much as I enjoy that one, William Witney was the best serial director and knew how to stage action scenes and had better sense of screen direction.
@@newfrontierfilms6314 I found this more engaging than Batman, and I'm a fan of Batman.
Columbia made Batman and Superman. Most of their serials were inferior to Republic Pictures.
Y'all gotta understand: The John English and William Whitney directorial combo is GOATed. They were basically the Russo brothers of the Serial era.
Thanks for uploading this classic serial! Wow! Kane "King of the Serials" Richmond *and* Tris Coffin!
I remember seeing Mr. Coffin in at least one episode of "The Adventures of Superman"!
🇦🇷🇦🇷🇦🇷excel ,,!!!
Tris Coffin was also Commando Cody.
Kane was #2 after Buster Crabbe, ONLY dude to play Flash, Buck & Tarzan. They wrestle before becoming allies en route to Mars, Richmond's Martian pilot doesn't even get a name.
@@unowen-nh9ov I remember watching that recently for the first time in years and said, "Whoa, Kane Richmond as a bad guy?" But he turns face before the end so everything was all right. First time I saw that serial I was a kid so didn't know who Kane Richmond was.
Every time I see the opening chapter ending. I can't help but think of the East River Mountain tunnel between West Virginia and Virgina.and every time I go through that tunnel I think of Spy Smasher
Oh yes I Love this Old Movies ❤️👍🎥
Capes WILL make a comeback. Mark my words.
I have this on video and it is great. looking forward to getting it on DVD. Good fun.
Thx for sharing this.. truly enjoyed watching it.. 😁😁😁

Pierre Durand is the GOATed for his sacrifice.
Gold Movie Serial Number 07.
Marguerite Chapman.
🥰 Thank you 👍Good serial ❤👍❤ Thursday Nov . 9 , 2023
When it comes to serials, Republic Pictures was top notch in terms of action stunt work and visual story telling. Spy Smasher is great entertainment, kudos to Kane Richmond as the title character.👍😁
"SKY SMASHER!" Have ya' ever heard a more intimidating Super
Name?
love the leaps in fight scenes
Kane Richmand was a great athlete!
Hey,why did the spy smasher, the shadow &the black cat wear capes??? They are interesting shows to watch🤔🤗!!!!
Because capes look cool?
Capes r coming back. Said that for years.
Some serials it's the bad guys who wear the silly costumes, and some serials it's the good guys.
One of these days somone gonna Dive rite into a frakas only to late the Pool's Empty😎🤣 no agua
This was the best serial of all - great action, stunts and direction by William Witney.
I agree. It's my favorite!
Marguerite Chapman. the leading lady of this serial was a Columbia leading lady of the 1940s . In her past leading lady days she played a supporting role as Tom Ewell's secretary in THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH a bit hit for star Marilyn Monroe .
great super hero character , and great series . ps - if you see this steven james b. , this is your old side kick from mulberry street .
Sorry, not Steve James, but glad you are enjoying Spy Smasher.
Have you ever considered uploading Hop Harrigan (aka Hop Harrigan America's Ace of the Airways) serial, the vigilante serial and Congo bill serial
I haven't heard of those but I will look for them. Thanks!
@@AtomicAgePictures same goes with The Miraculous Blackhawk: Freedom's Champion (aka Blackhawk)
Tris Coffin aka Jeff King Rocket Man !
Thank you
I wonder what's the purpose for the cape 🤣🤣
It looks cool!
@@AtomicAgePictures it looks cool? Hahaha 😁😁 you are so funny. My nephew when was a boy used to make capes of towels, Tshirts, anything he could find and run around the hallway as if flying, SUPERMAN! Hahaha 😂🎉 I thought it was funny. Now he's 65. I'm 73, but still like some of these movies. The violence shown was not as cruel as the movies today. They fought, but no blood showed.
Edna Mode in "The Incredibles" comes into my mind.
- No capes!!
It was probably shorthand to let viewers identify Spy Smasher from a distance. And it payed off as the twist in the penultimate chapter. I really enjoyed watching this, though I must admit I fast-forwarded through most of the fight scenes.
And yes, I thought of Edna Mode too! 😁
Those old serials are fun, but why the cape? 😜
Technically DC Comics now owns rights to the character, he was published by the same company that did Captain Marvel/Shazam.
So good.
any one know the plane flown by spy smasher? no the batplane, the high wing monoplane!
I’d check the website impdb as they have airplanes on films although I don’t know if it is on there, sure looks like the one in dick tracy.
👍👍👍
@@13:41 Wow, they had flat screens in those days.
Yes i like
Exciting series still
Spy shmasher is costumd vigilante and superhero hi fight villan the mask is bad guy in world war 2 but spy smasher will stop the mask
I know superhero superman batman and shazam he is captain marvel
Wow! Great action! The stunts were great!
This is my favorite serial of all.
Captain Midnight was my favorite but Smashers shocking end just topped it! Any suggestions on what action serial to watch next? Thanks for posting these treasures!!!!
@@rickbrown24 I would say among my top favorites are The Masked Marvel, Haunted Harbor, and Secret Agent X-9. But by far the most popular serial on my channel is The Adventures of Captain Marvel.
@@AtomicAgePictures thank you!!!! Your channel is awesome!!!!!!!
@@rickbrown24 my pleasure.
you would think the cape would get in the way.
"NO CAPES!" - Edna Mode
the map they show is so old west virginia isnt a state
@Vic Hedges A very clever trick to mislead prospective invader of the US, Herr Hitler, in case he secretly watched these films in his bunker in GROSS Berlin to get first-hand information.😉 I think, he also enjoyed Chaplin (or were they Mickey Mouse?) and other films. His communist successor in EAST Berlin, Erich Honnecker, had western pornography in his private home. Even in that respect, the red and the brown ones were kin.🤢
Spy smasher is one wimpy super hero!
