since it was a pattern i guess it should be 6 try calculating with 6 and check if it is working, secondly its a technique to remember, its not mandatory for you to remeber by 12^2 =144 (12*12), just remember normally like Jan -1, feb -4, march -4.

The value for 1700-1799 is 4 The last 2 digits for the year are 48 There are 12 leap years in that 48 so the final value for the year is 4+48+12 = 64 Then the value for the month of January is 1 And days is 26 so the final value comes down to 64+1+26 = 91 now as we divide 91 by 7 we get the quotient as 7 and as the year mentioned is leap year we need to subtract 1 so the final odd days value becomes 7-1 = 6 which is Friday
There's a correction actually In Leap years for Jan and Feb days we have to subtract the sum by 1. Eg:- Jan 20, 2000 6 + 0 + 0 + 1 +20 - 1 = 26 26/7= 5 Thursday

Just check if the last 2 digits is divisible by 4 or not for example in 1956 check if 56 is divisible by 4 or not
