I'd forgotten how perfect this album is. When it came out, I wore out three copies skipping high school and going home to get high. (My folks didn't have a new fangled cassette player !)
Released Jan. 19, 1980. I got it for my 20th birthday, Feb. 13, 1980 ... and played the HELL out of this elpee. I'd put my stereo speakers in the window of our dorm window and crank "Precious / The Phone Call / UpThe Neck / Tattooed Love Boys / Up The Neck" across the Ohio University East Green ... had so many people ask me, "Who IS this???" I got written up SO MANY TIMES, heh-heh! James Honeyman Scott was the best "new" guitarist of the 80s. Too bad he didn't make it past two albums.
I think this was 1983 or 1984, remember hearing this for the first time from a co-worker, I could get enough of it, then I kept looking for it, could not find it at any CD store, then found it here, added it to my Favs, again, thanks
I saw this original line-up in concert at U.C.L.A. (Paulley Pavillion) 1981 right B4 they released their 2nd recording...Bow Wow Wow, Code Blue & some other band I don't recall opened up for them. GREAT SHOW!!!! I remeber M. Chambers being an amazing drummer & they were better live, than on record. One of my faves off this record...Thanx for the post!
Space Invader by the Pretenders + Cheech & Chong = Awesome!!! fell in love with this song after watching cheech and chong's next movie, and hearing this during the end credits... Hilarious movie, Awesome song!
This is a must-have album for anybody. Hynde, Scott, Farndon, Chambers on FIRE, what a unit there at the start! They lost two pretty quick but the work left behind is tremendous stuff. Debut album and it's a 10.
About ten years ago, I went disc shopping and came across this album, remembered how good it was so I picked it up,to my dismay I get home crack it open and some douchebag put an Anne Murray disc in at the factory took a couple more days to get the right one talk about a bummer
This was one of the five most important albums of the New Wave. It set the tone and mood of what would become the power, discontent, hedonism and fashion of the early '80s.
@songsfinallyuploaded Actually this came out in 1979. The second album "Pretenders II" came out in 1980. I only know that because I have a copy of "Pretenders II" on cassette that I've had since I was like 7 or 8. Found it at a yard sale and snatched it up since I am a HUGE Pretenders fan, thanks to my mom. lol
oh, im sorry, i raised my voice a little. teehee. im sorry :-)-- !! years on this album still kicks my ass every time i play it. oh and does anyone agree that this album must be played in its entirety or you arent getting its full effect. damn, what's that song with the guitar so vicious its sounds like air raid sirens and machine guns?! dont tell me it'll come to me, oh damn nah it didnt.
@jflinn210 you got written up? why? where did you do this? when you say you got written up, it makes me think you did this at a school or something lol
Which two are James Honeyman Scott and Farndon the two that have since died? I misplaced this some time ago so don't have it to look at. Chrissie is still alive (afaIk), but what of the other man?
Left is Pete, Right is James. Middle dude is Martin Chambers, who's still with the band, and appears on the new album Hate For Sale, which came out in July.
Thanks! So on the left is Pete the guy who looks like he's from the 1950s. James is the one who has his hand on his glasses. Both gone. And Martin is the redhead next to Chrissie who more or less looks like Horatio Caine (David Caruso), who's still alive?
@@songsfinallyuploaded yes, and Martin and Chrissie are still at it with a great band, this new album really harkens back to the first one, this is a pretty tight band they have now.
Even though I'm sorry for the loss of the other two (the two on either end) I'm glad that the one that looks like Horatio Caine is the one that's still alive solely for the fact that I used to like watching CSI: Miami back when it originally aired. I'm also glad to read what you said (typed, actually) about how The Pretenders are doing now. Thanks!!
did they create this song with farndon and homeyman scott, or after they died ? , god rest their souls . I say create because i don't ever think chrissie could write the music and arranging by herself but i could be wrong. she was a great lyrics writer though and wonderful diverse singer.

Your version of Creep is the best!
This is one of the greatest albums, period.
Seriously, find the bad song.
My son, 2 months old, is listening to this in his sleep as we speak
This is one of the greatest debut albums.
One of my all time favorite riffs. Love the double down after the into. Hot!
One of the greatest debut albums (and there are a lot of good ones) of all time.
1979 for sure as Outlandos d'mour the police was 1978 a great couple of years for amazing music!
Great upload. I played this 1979. Good to hear again
Thanks!
One of the best albums of all times

Much love and respect for Chrissie. For ever.

Man, what a smokin' debut.
It was released on 19 January 1980.
The best riffs ever.....
DAMN, this song rules!!!
If there's such a thing as "crushingly melodic," it begins at 3:44 and goes until...well, until you hear the video game noise. Awesome.
This Kicks ass!!!
I only wish i could crank it up louder on my computer.
Chrissie is the goods!
love yhis band
Rock Royalty!
This rocks.
Thanx!!
Are you Kidding me, this great, to the Band, WHEN ARE you going to start touring again?
chrissie-class
YES!!!
May I recommend the book 'An Essential Guide To Music In The 1970s' by Johnny Zero. The author is a big fan of this fine instrumental.
Oh baby, sweet heart.
I always say that! The Cars debut also!
@songsfinallyuploaded Thankyou
@tiefhals I SO agree with you
wish the band could have continued with the "sound" of the first album
the only thing I could ever make out was something about divorce papers in the mail.
It was great then and it is now.. ,as Velvet Underground as one can be !!!
2:29 - Cheech and Chong ascending!
That space coke blew them into orbit!
@mo9504: It was 19 January 1980.
That aint half bad compared to the fate that befell old Beans!

2:31 is what you're looking for.
MEANT to played in tandem. thank you.
Didn't know that. I put them together because the titles go good with one another.
Or I can say (type actually) that one title flows into the other.
So no idea IF radio stations put them together...or IF I finally did it first after all these decades.
that's what I meant.
None better.
I have forgotten how good they were, SMH
thank you
hey that one dial tone sound in this song, was it the same one used in Pink Floyd's song "Mother"?
oops, was it 1976 or 77, somebody help me, I am old LOL
Crunchy bass
funny, sry about your luck!
@jflinn210 you got written up? why? where did you do this? when you say you got written up, it makes me think you did this at a school or something lol
is this in the right key?
It's possible it may be sped up a half step
thinking out lout ;) ty
This has NOT been sped up NOR altered in any way, shape or form.
Thank you, probably i never thought of it and/or my acoustic was off. sorry & thanks for reply!
You're welcome!!
One person got double their garbage back from Richie Aprile.
