  • Brasilia, a capital created ex nihilo in the centre of the country in 1956, was a landmark in the history of town planning. Urban planner Lucio Costa and architect Oscar Niemeyer intended that every element - from the layout of the residential and administrative districts (often compared to the shape of a bird in flight) to the symmetry of the buildings themselves - should be in harmony with the city’s overall design. The official buildings, in particular, are innovative and imaginative.

    Brasília was an ambitious planned development originally in the late 50's to move the capital to a more central location, . Not a perfect outcome but ambitious.

    Although I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brasília is my home town! I am really proud of what my ancestors did, building It, and I love its beauty and life quality! I think every Brazilian should know Brasília to understand what we are capable of. Be Welcome to the Capital of Hope!

    "...an end-of-spectrum example valuable as a reference." Indeed.
    All this talk of architecture, without any mention of how it serves the lives of those who live in it's shadow. All I saw (and anyone can re-watch the video) on the broad, stark plazas were the destitute wandering about, and the narrator even says that the planned shopping areas of the Superquadros are not popular. Nothing in Brasilia works for people. I've consistently seen far more joy on the faces of the residents of Tijuana, considered by most to be a hell hole.
    No utopia here.

    I never understood why a country with a capital city as gorgeous and historically important as Rio de Janeiro would deliberately move its capital to a newly built place in the middle of nowhere. The rationale to move the capital to a more central location doesn't make any sense and seems like a waste of energy and money.

      Today Brasília is the third largest city in Brazil, and that was the plan. Even today about 50% of Brazilians live within 200 km of the coast, while the center-west region is larger than Western Europe and had unlimited agricultural potential. So, moving the Capital was the first step towards building the richest region in the country. Even today, people continue to migrate to the region, but people need jobs to migrate and Brasilia created this.

      if any country were to attack Brazil, it would be easier in Rio de Janeiro, because it is on the coast, but in Brasilia, it would be easy to identify if any plane was invading Brazil, since the plane would have to travel many kilometers to reach the capital

    • @williamthierry5976
      @williamthierry5976 Рік тому +4

      Rio de Janeiro is a coastal city, the coastal capital facilitates attacks on the central power of a country. And Brazil already wanted to change the capital since the period that was an empire, after the republican coup the plans were late. It's like the US capital is in New York, it doesn't make sense strategically. And in the case of Brazil moving the capital to the center of the country helped to populate the central region of the country.

    • @jonasv.c.8924
      @jonasv.c.8924 Рік тому

      @@williamthierry5976 I know the official explanation to justify the (extremely) expensive move from Rio de Janeiro to Brasilia. And yet none of the arguments make any sense to me.
      The capital was moved in 1960, this is the age of fighter jets, air raids and nuclear threat. I’m sorry, but I don’t see how a capital more land inwards would be better protected from cruising missiles carrying bombs and nuclear war heads. I can see why it made sense to propose a land inward move in the 19th century, but by the 1950s this proposal had already become an outdated strategy from a bygone century.
      It’s interesting you mention New York. Let’s put aside the fact that New York never was the US federal capital (Philadelphia was). Would it make any sense to move the US capital from the East Coast to a newly constructed city in the Midwest in the 1950s under the pretext that it’s allegedly better for defence purposes? Of course not! It doesn’t make any sense to do that in the mid 20th century.
      Also, what’s the point in artificially moving the capital away from the most populous region? Were the animals and plants on the Planalto Brasileiro complaining about the lack of cities?
      So why did they move the capital? Corruption, foremost. There are serious reasons to believe that cronies connected to the Kubitschek presidency were favoured during the construction of Brasilia.
      Another reason lies probably in authoritarian regimes’ tendency to be scared of the people. It’s easier to role out authoritarian rule in headquarters that are far removed from the hustle and bustle of Rio de Janeiro and São Paolo: (1) it’s much more difficult for the people to travel all the way to Brasilia to protest and (2) Brasilia’s wide open boulevards make it easier for the regime to violently crack down on any protesters who do make it to the capital. This is the precise reason why Paris was transformed from a medieval city with small and swirling roads to a 19th century metropolis with large boulevards: it’s easier for the police to disperse rioters on a large boulevard.
      And guess what: in 1964 (that’s 4 years after the inauguration of Brasilia is the new capital), democracy would be overthrown and Brazil would remain a dictatorship until 1985…

      @Rodrigo Marques dá um google aí, pesquise por "Communist Architecture" e veja se não parece que foi tudo projetado pelo Niemeyer, que diga-se de passagem era um Stalinista convicto, a arquitetura dele é fria, desarmônica, torta, desproporcional e não tem qualquer simbologia que remeta à nossa história e tradições, dá depressão só de olhar, durante milênios a humanidade desenvolveu e enriqueceu a arte e arquitetura pra chegarem esses modernistas e jogarem tudo no lixo

    • @rafaeldcarmo

      @Rodrigo Marques e me emociono muito também, é um profundo sentimento de tristeza e desgosto ao ver aquelas obras sem vida, sem alma que não traduzem em nada a história e cultura brasileira, uma completa desconstrução e destruição de nossos valores, prefiro uma casinha simples de Ouro Preto do que aquelas obras faraônicas de Brasília, são horríveis e sem falar das igrejas do ateu niemeyer em Brasília e BH, verdadeiras aberrações, se for comparar com as catedrais góticas dá vontade de chorar
