Building Brasília: A Modernist Utopia | HENI Talks

- 1955. Brazil. A man - Juscelino Kubitschek - campaigning to be president made a promise to the people to construct an entirely new capital city from scratch, a pledge to create a modern heart for the burgeoning country. Kubitschek won; he was elected president and so commenced one of the most ambitious single building projects ever. The city of Brasília was fashioned in just 4 years.
City planner Lùcio Costa’s graphic design for an ideal city was combined with architect Oscar Niemeyer’s artistic prowess and provocative use of concrete. Niemeyer was notorious for creating pure, sculptural and sometimes shocking buildings. But were these seemingly otherworldly structures practical? And what is their legacy today? Join Professor Richard J. Williams in this HENI Talk to uncover the story of this modernist 'utopia'.

Luckily I was born in Brasília. I had to move of Brazil but every time I can, I go happy to visit the family and this wonderful city that I never get tired 🖤
Brasil became independent in 1822. But the idea of a capital in the interior of the country was old as the first independence movements of 1760 to 1790.
It must be noted that Brazil became an independent Kingdom in 1822!
Great talk! He's right about the residential blocks, they are green and bucolic in contrast to the more "civic" areas of the city. A place like no other.
Thanks for taking the time to watchour film, Monica. The superblocks look lush - we'd love to visit. It must be a spectacular experience.
I love how respectful he is when discribing this city. I've seen some other "specialists" being rude and offensive as if it was an inhabited place. There are so many people who love and make BsB great!
Check out some of our other films on the channel.
The first positive take on Brasilia...most others complain about the car centric design...
I love Brasília. I've been there twice, and it's very unique and beautiful. The weather is bad, though. My nose always bleeds from the low humidity. Even in the period of the year when they consider of good humidity, it's still horrible and for someone who grew up in the coast like me, we feel the difference.
A very interesting contemporary take on Brasilia.
Thanks for taking the time to watch, Andre! We're so pleased you enjoyed it.
Wonderful visuals with interesting details. However, the depth of disdain the speaker has for the individuals involved is distracting. He tries to be impartial, but wow! It’s as if he’s created something much better and is trying to get through this discussion without becoming associated with the location. You’re not from 1950’s Brazil. We get it. Now let’s get on with how awesome the visuals are!! A breathtaking city design that has me ( from Californian) saying, “Damn, I need to visit Brazil!”.
his voice is very relaxing and the perspective was interesting
the best foreign video talking about brasilia! love this city
Thank you! We were honoured to hear Prof. Williams's expert insights. Great to hear you enjoyed it.
This is an interesting documentary about a great architect.
Un petit reportage très très intéressant. Merci !
Merci beaucoup!
I want to visit. Looks fun.
Its' love Brasília🤩🤩🤩
Thank you
It is the recreation of "tel el amarna " unique in the world ;
If there is one place I want to visit in South America, it's Brasília. It has the most beautiful stadium in the world.
A representação das cidades satélites no vídeo foi deplorável, como se fossem aquela situação das fotos, de montanhas de lixo.
Beautiful city. Doesn't appear to be pedestrian friendly which is really unfortunate.
hidden walkways to protect from the weather.
@@bashisobsolete.pythonismyn6321 thats stupid
It wasn’t built for people
It was built for cars, which is sad, but on the other hand, drivers here respect pedestrians the most in the country, which makes it a rather safe town to walk
As soon as you solve our mobility problems of the XXI century, Brasilia with all it's luxurious public spaces will be ready to implement the future technologies us humans might find.
Does any one know the name of the music track that opens this video? Catchy!
Just read the comment re: not being bossa Nova. I liked the track and would appreciate the artists name. Thank you.
The dome building needs some TLC.
Can you live in the "residential blocks", or it is only for government employees?
Anyone can live there. However some apartments are property of the government for some public servants to live there temporarily. It's what we call functional apartments.

does anyone know the name of the building? Thanks :)

But its fortunate to be both philosopher and architects, the mind just functions electro like the universe, the brain is truly coherent through time
🤔🤔🤔
the soundtrack should be bossa nova
We did think about a Bossa Nova soundtrack, but it didn't quite work with the surreal-looking architecture of the city on film. Hope you enjoyed the film despite the musical score!
@@HENITalks Very Nice feature. What's the title of the catchy soundtrack? :-)
whos here because of global societies lmao
you alr kno

It’s a city that showcases the hideousness of late 1950’s modern architecture. 🤢🤮
the concept is dystopian, the style is ugly, it looks depressing.
Brasília is pretty amazing, I’ve been there 8 times... But please, stay away.
I wouldn't say dystopian when you are in front of very artistic buildings. The core of the city is very open, which may gives you a simultaneous feeling of loneliness and intimate interaction with those palaces and monuments. But it is walking through its highly green residential blocks, where nature has disguised those "soviet/Le Corbusier" style rectangular buildings, that you may feel the quietness of the city, and Lucio Costa's "gift": that feeling of being close to nature, while living in an urban area.
Brutalist ugliness.
